Depuis leur premier album en 2011, The Vaccines font parti des groupes dont on attend toujours le nouvel album avec impatience. Trois ans après Back In Love City, le groupe londonien nous propose de découvrir son sixième album studio. Intitulé Pick-Up Full Of Pink Carnations, il est dors et déjà disponible via Thirty Tigers. La guitare et la voix reconnaissable entre mille de Justin Hayward-Young nous accueille doucement dans l’excellent « Sometimes, I Swear » qui explose après quelques secondes en une bombe dansante dont le groupe a toujours eu le secret. Les anglais maîtrisent le rock et on le ressent encore dans le début de cette nouvelle sortie. Les rythmiques de Árni Árnason à la basse et Yoann Intonti à la batterie vous font toujours autant bouger dans votre salon avec cette envie de vous coller le sourire aux oreilles tout au long de l’écoute.
Le voyage continue avec « Lunar Eclipse », qui là aussi est un hymne qu’on voit parfaitement rejoindre les lives du groupe et être repris en chœur par le public. On retrouve dans ce nouvel album tout ce qui fait qu’on aime The Vaccines avec toujours cette petite dose de nouveauté qui fait de chaque sortie un plaisir d’écoute complet. Et comme le dit si bien le morceau « Discount De Kooning (Last One Standing) » peut être devrions nous continuer de danser, et c’est clairement ce qu’on va faire encore sur le titre suivant. Timothy Lanham est lui aussi en grande forme alternant entre guitare, claviers et percussions sur les différents morceaux. La pochette de l’album renvoie parfaitement à ce qu’on imagine en écoutant les nouveaux titres du groupe londonien, un voyage en voiture la fenêtre ouverte en chantant toutes les paroles bien fort sur une route de campagne.
Evidemment sous le côté dansant des morceaux se cache un spleen que Justin nous distille dans des paroles évoquant la perte, le changement et la désillusion face à des attentes qui se voient contrariées par la réalité. Le gros coup de coeur de l’album sera « Another Nightmare » et ses sonorités de guitares plus sombres et son rythme un peu post punk sur les bords. La fin de l’album continue sur la même veine et nous laisse avec le mélancoliquement entrainant « Anonymous in Los Feliz ».
The Vaccines continuent avec Pick-Up Full Of Pink Carnations à distiller un rock de haute volée qui nous enchante à chaque écoute. On attendait cet album avec impatience et nous sommes récompensés par dix titres qu’on hésitera pas à rééecouter encore et encore à l’avenir. On espère une deuxième tournée européenne après celle déjà complète de partout de janvier avec des dates françaises hors de Paris. En tout cas foncez sur ce nouvel album des anglais qui regorge de tubes en puissance et de refrains à reprendre en chœur.

Since their debut album in 2011, The Vaccines have been one of those bands whose new album is always eagerly awaited. Three years on from Back In Love City, the London band have released their sixth studio album. Pick-Up Full Of Pink Carnations is already available via Thirty Tigers. What do the English rockers have in store for us on this new release? We’ll take you along to find out.
Justin Hayward-Young‘s guitar and instantly recognisable voice greet us gently on the excellent « Sometimes, I Swear », which explodes after just a few seconds into the kind of dance bomb the band have always been known for. The English have mastered rock, and you can feel it again at the start of this new release. The rhythms of Árni Árnason on bass and Yoann Intonti on drums will keep you moving in your living room, and will keep you smiling all the way through.
The journey continues with ‘Lunar Eclipse’, another anthem that is sure to feature on the band’s live shows and be taken up in chorus by the audience. This new album has everything that makes us love The Vaccines, with that little dose of novelty that makes each release a complete pleasure to listen to. And as the track « Discount De Kooning (Last One Standing) » so aptly puts it, maybe we should keep dancing, and that’s clearly what we’re going to do on the next track. Timothy Lanham is also in fine form, alternating between guitar, keyboards and percussion on the various tracks. The album cover is a perfect illustration of what you might imagine when listening to the London band’s new tracks: a car journey with the window open, singing all the lyrics loudly on a country road.
Obviously, underneath the danceability of the tracks lies a spleen that Justin distils into lyrics about loss, change and disillusionment with expectations that are thwarted by reality. The highlight of the album is ‘Another Nightmare’, with its darker guitar tones and post-punk rhythm. The end of the album continues in the same vein, leaving us with the melancholically catchy ‘Anonymous in Los Feliz’.
With Pick-Up Full Of Pink Carnations, The Vaccines continue to distil high-flying rock that delights with every listen. We’ve been waiting impatiently for this album, and we’ve been rewarded with ten tracks we’ll be listening to again and again in the future. We’re hoping for a second European tour after the one that’s already sold out everywhere in January, with French dates outside Paris. In any case, don’t miss out on this new album from the English band, packed with powerful hits and choruses to sing along to.
