Les gallois de Neck Deep sortent le 19 janvier leur nouvel album via Hopeless Records, intitulé sobrement Neck Deep. On s’attend donc à un album à leur image, d’autant plus qu’il a été enregistré par le groupe lui-même dans un esprit de retour aux sources, après un peu plus de 10 ans d’existence. Allons écouter cette nouvelle sortie pop punk !

On entre directement dans le vif du sujet avec « Dumbstruck Dumf**k » : sans introduction ni fioriture, le pop punk énergique de Neck Deep nous arrive aux oreilles. Le titre est d’une efficacité incroyable pour nous mettre dans l’ambiance de l’album dès les premières notes et nous accroche instantanément. Comme tout bon groupe de pop punk qui se respecte, les titres sont assez courts, de deux à quatre minutes maximum. Le rythme est donc soutenu et on ne s’ennuie jamais à l’écoute de cet album. L’enchaînement entre les dix titres est fluide, une harmonie se dégageant de l’ensemble de l’écoute. La voix de Ben Barlow, assez haut perchée et toujours à la limite de la saturation, nous emmène dans un torrent d’émotions, donnant parfois l’impression d’une certaine urgence à les faire sortir. Cette notion se retrouve particulièrement avec « We Need More Bricks » intimant les gens à se battre pour leurs droits, pour leur vision de la société. La sonorité est résolument pop-punk et on se verrait bien sortir le skate, casquette vissée sur la tête, l’album de Neck Deep dans le casque. Et ce n’est pas « Go Outside » qui va contredire cette impression ! Quelques titres apparaissent plus posés, plus mélodiques, dans une forme de mélancolie, tels que « It Won’t Be Like This Forever » ou « This Is All My Fault ». Les riffs de guitare comme dans « They May Not Mean To (But They Do) accompagnent nos pensées nostalgiques face à ces sonorités de notre adolescence (mais qu’on aime toujours autant !). On se laisse embarquer par l’atmosphère de chaque titre, et on s’imagine déjà taper des mains avec le groupe en live, mené par le rythme de Matt Powles (batterie) sur « Moody Weirdo », qui clôture l’album.

Neck Deep nous propose un album éponyme très réussi, un retour aux sources qui nous convient totalement ! Chaque morceau a son âme, sa personnalité, mais le tout forme un ensemble harmonieux qu’on prend plaisir à écouter. Nul doute que ce cinquième opus rencontrera un succès au moins aussi grand que ses prédécesseurs ! Et si Neck Deep connaît un franc succès Outre-Atlantique et Outre-Manche, on espère les voir défendre leur album dans nos contrées très rapidement !

Welsh band Neck Deep are releasing their new album on 19 January via Hopeless Records, soberly entitled Neck Deep. So we’re expecting an album in their image, especially as it was recorded by the band themselves in a spirit of going back to their roots, after just over 10 years in the business. Let’s have a listen to this new pop punk release!

We get straight to the heart of the matter with ‘Dumbstruck Dumf**k’: without introduction or embellishment, Neck Deep‘s energetic pop punk hits us on the ears. The track is incredibly effective at getting us into the mood for the album from the very first notes, and it hooks us in instantly. Like any self-respecting pop punk band, the tracks are fairly short, from two to four minutes maximum. So the pace is steady and there’s never a dull moment when you’re listening to this album. The sequence of the ten tracks is fluid and harmonious. Ben Barlow‘s voice, fairly high-pitched and always on the verge of saturation, takes us on a torrent of emotions, sometimes giving the impression of a certain urgency to get them out. This notion is particularly evident in ‘We Need More Bricks’, which urges people to fight for their rights and their vision of society. The sound is resolutely pop-punk, and it’s easy to see yourself getting out on your skateboard, cap on, Neck Deep album in your headphones. And ‘Go Outside’ doesn’t contradict that impression! Some of the tracks, such as ‘It Won’t Be Like This Forever’ and ‘This Is All My Fault’, are more sedate, more melodic, more melancholy. Guitar riffs like « They May Not Mean To (But They Do) » accompany our nostalgic thoughts about the sounds of our adolescence (but which we still love just as much!). You’re drawn in by the atmosphere of each track, and you can already see yourself clapping along with the band live, led by the rhythm of Matt Powles (drums) on ‘Moody Weirdo’, which closes the album.

Neck Deep‘s eponymous album is a great success, a return to their roots that’s just right for us! Each track has its own soul and personality, but the whole forms a harmonious whole that’s a pleasure to listen to. There’s no doubt that this fifth opus will be at least as successful as its predecessors! And if Neck Deep are a huge success across the Atlantic and in the UK, we hope to see them defend their album in France very soon!
