Pour ouvrir cette deuxième partie de saison le Grand Mix offre à ses abonné.e.s une soirée gratuite, également ouverte à un public plus large. Avant le début de la musique live, c’est un aperçu de la programmation à venir qui nous est proposée par les équipes de la salle, dans le cadre chaleureux du bar/cantine de la salle tourquennoise. Ensuite c’est direction la grande salle pour y retrouver Vox Low et Bärlin, pour une mise en avant de la scène française dans d’excellente conditions. Visiblement cette affiche à fait son petit effet vu que le concert devait se dérouler sur la scène club et a été déplacé suite au nombre important de réservations!

La soirée commence donc avec Bärlin, qui nous avaient bluffé début 2023 avec leur album State Of Fear. C’est donc avec un grand bonheur que nous retrouvons le groupe en live pour la première fois. Les loops de basse de Laurent Macaigne nous font vibrer d’entrée avant que la clarinette de Clément Barbier et la batterie de Simon Thorny viennent les rejoindre. Dès les premières minutes nous voilà happés dans l’univers entre post rock et cold wave du groupe lillois. Le chant de Clément est totalement habité, et il n’hésite pas à parcourir la scène comme envouté en nous livrant une prestation totalement hypnotisant. Le duo formé par Laurent et Simon nous donne des frissons de bonheur avec des rythmiques tantôt puissantes et tantôt beaucoup plus douces. Un mégaphone fait son apparition et donne aux lignes vocales une autre dimension. Le silence est roi dans la salle de Tourcoing, comme si le public était sous l’emprise chamanique des trois musiciens. Les applaudissements fusent entre chaque morceau, véritables oeuvres à part entière qui offrent chacune une belle vision des talents de composition du trio. Le son de la clarinette nous transporte toujours plus et nous montre une fois encore que ces instruments ont toute leur place sur une scène rock. On ne voit pas le temps passer et lorsque le groupe nous annonce la fin du set, en remerciant également la salle pour l’accueil et le public d’être présents si nombreux, on se dit qu’on serait bien repartis pour un set deux fois plus long. Mais ce dernier morceau nous donnera une dernière avalanche d’émotions fortes et nous laissera avec un grand sourire sur les oreilles.
Bärlin nous ont livré en ce jeudi soir une prestation d’exception, qui nous fait regretter d’avoir manqué les dernières dates du trio dans le coin. On part se rafraichir pleinement conquis par ce set envoutant à souhait, et on se dit qu’on ne loupera plus une occasion de voir le trio sur scène tant leur prestation restera gravée dans nos esprits.
Petite pause express et c’est au tour de Vox Low de monter sur la scène du Grand Mix. Le quatuor nous présente les titres de son nouvel album Keep On Falling sorti l’an dernier chez Born Bad Records. En quelques secondes on se retrouve plongés dans une avalanche sonore entre krautrock et post punk. Le quatuor est en grande forme et retourne le public avec ses morceaux aussi froids qu’entraînants, comme « Henry Rode » par exemple. Les claviers sont évidemment rois autour du chanteur qui nous montre toute l’étendue de son talent. Les autres musiciens ne sont pas en reste et nous donnent envie de danser dès les premiers titres du set. On sent que l’ambiance est au beau fixe dans la salle et on comprend vite pourquoi autant de gens ont fait le déplacement ce soir. On se laisse porter par la musique dansante du trio et on profite du superbe son de la salle pour découvrir ce groupe dont on ne connaissait rien avant cette soirée. Les morceaux s’enchaînent et nous livrent toujours plus de l’heureux mélange des genres proposés par la formation. Après le dernier titre, « I Am A Strange Machine Sometimes », totalement électrisant d’une prestation mené tambours battants, le groupe quitte la scène très largement applaudi par un public aux anges.
Vox Low ont montré ce soir que leur carrière est bien lancée avec un set maîtrisé de bout en bout. Le public du nord a également fait honneur à sa réputation et offert un accueil de grande qualité au quatuor. On vous encourage à aller découvrir leur travail aussi bien en live que sur album! On imagine aisément les retrouver très rapidement dans la région ! Ce fut donc encore une très belle soirée dans la belle salle du Grand Mix et on a hâte d’y retourner pour de nouvelles pépites musicales recommandées par l’équipe plutôt dans la soirée.

To open the second half of the season, Le Grand Mix is offering its subscribers a free evening, also open to a wider audience. Before the live music kicks off, the venue’s staff give us a sneak preview of the forthcoming programme in the cosy setting of the bar/canteen. Then it’s off to the big room to find Vox Low and Bärlin, showcasing the French scene in excellent conditions. Clearly, the line-up was a hit, as the concert was due to take place on the club stage, but had to be moved due to the sheer number of bookings!

The evening kicks off with Bärlin, who blew us away in early 2023 with their album State Of Fear. So it’s with great pleasure that we find the band live for the first time. Laurent Macaigne‘s bass loops thrill us from the outset, before Clément Barbier‘s clarinet and Simon Thorny‘s drums join in. From the very first minutes, we’re drawn into the Lille-based band’s universe of post rock and cold wave. Clément‘s vocals are totally inhabited, and he doesn’t hesitate to roam the stage as if bewitched, delivering a totally hypnotic performance. The duet formed by Laurent and Simon gives us shivers of happiness with rhythms that are sometimes powerful and sometimes much softer. A megaphone makes an appearance, giving the vocal lines another dimension. Silence reigns supreme in the Tourcoing venue, as if the audience were under the shamanic spell of the three musicians. Applause erupts between each piece, each a work in its own right, offering a fine vision of the trio’s compositional talents. The sound of the clarinet continues to transport us, showing us once again that these instruments have their place on a rock stage. Time flew by, and when the band announced the end of their set, thanking the venue for their warm welcome and the crowd for turning out in such numbers, we thought we’d be back for a set twice as long. But this last track will give us a final avalanche of strong emotions and leave us with a big smile on our faces.
Bärlin put in an exceptional performance on this Thursday evening, making us wish we’d missed the trio’s last few dates in the area. We headed off for a refreshing drink, fully won over by this bewitching set, and we told ourselves that we wouldn’t miss another opportunity to see the trio live on stage, as their performance will remain engraved in our minds.
After a quick break, it’s Vox Low‘s turn to take to Le Grand Mix stage. The quartet present tracks from their new album Keep On Falling, released last year by Born Bad Records. In a matter of seconds, we find ourselves immersed in an avalanche of sound, somewhere between krautrock and post-punk. The quartet are in top form, turning the audience inside out with tracks that are as cold as they are catchy, as « Henry Rode » for exemple. The keyboards are obviously king around the singer, who shows us the full extent of his talent. The other musicians are not to be outdone, making us want to dance from the very first tracks of the set. You can feel the atmosphere in the room and it’s easy to see why so many people have turned up this evening. We let ourselves be carried away by the trio’s danceable music and took advantage of the superb sound in the room to discover this band we knew nothing about before this evening. One track followed another, revealing more and more of the group’s happy mix of genres. After the last electrifying track, « I Am A Strange Machine Sometimes », of a performance led by a beating drum, the band left the stage to rapturous applause from an ecstatic audience.
Vox Low showed tonight that their career is well underway with a set that was mastered from start to finish. The northern audience also lived up to their reputation, giving the quartet a warm welcome. We encourage you to go and discover their work, both live and on album! It’s not hard to imagine that they’ll be back in the region very soon! So it was another great evening at Le Grand Mix, and we can’t wait to get back there for more of the musical nuggets recommended by the team earlier in the evening.
