Après un changement de line-up dans Thundermother au printemps 2023, les trois musiciennes ayant quittés le groupe (Guernica Mancini au chant, Emlee Johansson à la batterie et Mona “Demona” Lindgren aux guitares et basses) ont rapidement décidées de former un nouveau groupe : The Gems. Avec un premier single, “Like A Phoenix” sorti pendant l’été 2023, le groupe pose les bases de ce qu’on peut découvrir sur leur premier album : Phoenix à paraître le 26 janvier 2024 sur Napalm Records.

L’album commence par un interlude plutôt calme où on peut directement être témoins des capacités vocales et du grain de voix particulier de Guernica Mancini, accompagnée d’abord d’un simple kick de batterie auquel vient s’ajouter cymbales, guitare acoustique et choeurs. Le tout se clôture sur le début du riff de “Queens”, qui nous plonge dans un rock’n’roll surpuissant, qui célèbre à travers ses paroles le pouvoir féminin, et on imagine vite qu’il est aussi évoqué la cohésion des trois ex-Thundermother à travers le texte : “Queens stick together, queens always and forever”. « Send Me To The Wolves” aborde quant à lui le fait de ne pas abandonner face à l’adversité, le tout sur fond d’un rock’n’roll groovy, accrocheur, avec une voix puissante et rauque, secondée par une batterie bien appuyé pour donner le ton et une guitare aux accents hard rock / bluesy.
On retrouve un peu plus loin sur l’album un côté plus heavy au groupe avec le titre “Undiscovered Paths”, qui présente des accents beaucoup plus modernes que les morceaux précédents en présentant un morceau qui donne rapidement envie de headbanguer ! L’interlude “Maria’s Song” apporte un moment de répit avec la présence d’un violon et d’une orchestration qui reprennent le thème principal du morceau suivant, “Ease Your Pain”. L’occasion, à travers ce morceau acoustique évoquant la gestion de la peine et de la douleur, de découvrir un côté très bluesy à la voix de Guernica.
La seconde moitié de l’album est jonchée de son lot de morceaux rock’n’roll survitaminés avec le single “Like A Phoenix”, “P.S.Y.C.H.O” ou encore “Force Of Nature”. On retrouvera pour notre plus grand plaisir une nouvelle fois le premier single, qui a marqué les débuts de l’aventure du groupe, en conclusion de l’album dans une version acoustique. Cette version se révèle être par égard encore plus prenante que sa sœur jumelle électrique ! On ressent, dans la puissance vocale déployée sur le refrain, que le morceau est littéralement devenu l’hymne du groupe et parle à la perfection de la situation vécue suite au départ des musiciennes de Thundermother : à l’image du phœnix qui renaît de ses cendres !
Ce premier album est une excellente surprise ! Déjà prometteur pour les fans désireux de suivre l’évolution des trois anciennes musiciennes de Thundermother, on les retrouve avec un album tirant le plus fort de leur expérience passée tout en repoussant les limites en apportant d’autres sonorités aux différents morceaux. Voyant les choses en grand, The Gems nous font découvrir seize morceaux qui ne nous laissent à aucun moment sur notre faim, avec un mélange détonnant de rock’n’roll teinté par moment de blues et / ou de heavy !

After a line-up change in Thundermother in spring 2023, the three musicians who had left the band (Guernica Mancini on vocals, Emlee Johansson on drums and Mona ‘Demona’ Lindgren on guitars and bass) quickly decided to form a new group: The Gems. With their first single, « Like A Phoenix », released in the summer of 2023, the band laid the foundations for what was to come on their debut album, Phoenix, due out on 26 January 2024 on Napalm Records.
The album begins with a rather quiet interlude where we can immediately witness Guernica Mancini‘s vocal abilities and distinctive vocal style, accompanied at first by a simple drum kick to which cymbals, acoustic guitar and backing vocals are added. The album closes with the start of the riff for « Queens », a powerful rock’n’roll song that celebrates the power of women through its lyrics, and it’s easy to imagine that the three ex-Thundermothers’ cohesion is also evoked in the text: « Queens stick together, queens always and forever ». « Send Me To The Wolves », meanwhile, is about not giving up in the face of adversity, set against a backdrop of groovy, catchy rock’n’roll, with powerful, husky vocals, backed up by heavy drums to set the tone and hard rock/bluesy guitar.
Later on in the album, the band’s heavier side is brought to the fore with « Undiscovered Paths », which has a much more modern feel than the previous tracks, presenting a song that quickly makes you want to headbang! The interlude « Maria’s Song » provides a moment’s respite, with a violin and orchestration that echo the main theme of the next track, « Ease Your Pain ». This acoustic track about coping with pain and grief gives Guernica‘s voice a bluesy edge.
The second half of the album is littered with its fair share of supercharged rock’n’roll tracks, including the single « Like A Phoenix », « P.S.Y.C.H.O » and « Force Of Nature ». To our great delight, the first single, which marked the beginning of the band’s adventure, is once again featured at the end of the album in an acoustic version. This version proves to be even more gripping than its electric twin! The vocal power of the chorus makes it clear that the song has literally become the band’s anthem, and speaks perfectly of the situation following the departure of the Thundermother musicians: like the phoenix rising from its ashes!
This first album is an excellent surprise! Already promising for fans eager to follow the evolution of the three former Thundermother musicians, we find them with an album that draws on their past experience while pushing the boundaries by bringing other sounds to the different tracks. Thinking big, The Gems offer us sixteen tracks that never leave us wanting more, with an explosive mix of rock’n’roll tinged at times with blues and/or heavy metal!
