Direction le Zénith de Paris pour l’étape française de la grosse tournée à ne pas manquer en ce début d’année: celle des anglais d’Architects! Le groupe qui monte en puissance d’années en années se retrouve enfin en tête d’affiche de la plus grande salle du Parc de la Villette pour un concert qu’on attend de pied ferme. Pour les accompagner, le groupe s’entoure des canadiens de Spiritbox et de leurs compatriotes de Loathe. C’est dans une salle remplie de plus de 5000 personnes qu’on entre pour vivre cette soirée en compagnie d’un de nos groupes phares.

La scène est recouverte d’un grand drap noir devant lequel Loathe s’installent et démarrent en trombes avec « Gored » issu de leur album I Let It In And Took Everything. Le public les découvre en grande majorité ce soir, et c’est un peu aussi le cas pour nous, n’ayant jamais vu le groupe en concert. Les stroboscopes rouges sont à pleine puissance, ce qui nous empêche de bien voir ce qui se passe sur scène. Mais côté musique ça envoie fort!  Au chant, Kadeem France donne tout et chauffe le public avec sa voix puissante tinté de l’accent de Liverpool. Véritable bête de scène, il profite de chaque centimètre carré et n’hésite pas à enchanger entre les morceaux avec un public qui se réveille petit à petit. Quel plaisir d’entendre « Dance On My Skin », morceau de leur premier album, qui prend un véritable souffle en concert. La demi-heure de set file à toute vitesse et voit les premiers pits se former dans la fosse. Le groupe nous quitte avec l’excellent « Heavy Is The Head… » qui vient terminer de conquérir le public parisien avec une pluie de riffs tous plus dévastateurs les uns que les autres.

La prestation de Loathe a tenue toutes ses promesses et nous donne envie de retrouver le groupe dans un cadre plus intimiste pour profiter pleinement de la prestation scénique du groupe. On sent que la formation a voulu donner son meilleur ce soir, et c’est clairement mission accomplie!

Une partie du grand rideau tombe et dévoile un écran derrière l’installation des instruments des canadiens de Spiritbox. On sent dès la première note qu’une grande partie du public à envie de retrouver le groupe mené par Courtney LaPlante. Le logo du groupe s’affiche sur l’écran et c’est parti avec « Cellar Door » que les fans présents connaissent déjà par cœur. Le groupe est plein d’énergie et donne tout pour chauffer à blanc le public avant le set des anglais. On avait vu le groupe avec Bring Me The Horizon en juin dernier, et force est de constater que l’effet n’est pas du tout le même entre les deux prestations. « The Void » et « Rotoscope » ont évidemment les faveurs de moshpits dans la fosse, mais de notre côté il y a comme un coup de moins bien. On n’accroche beaucoup moins à la prestation que la fois précédente et on a du mal à rentrer dans l’aventure proposée par le groupe canadien. Sur le désormais mythique « Yellowjacket », Sam Carter viendra mêler sa voix à celle de Courtney pour un duo qui fonctionne très bien. Les fans sont aux anges, et la fin de set sur « Hollyroller » après des remerciements du groupe pour l’accueil, leur donnera une dernière occasion de s’époumoner. Le groupe quitte la scène très largement applaudi par le public parisien et conforte à leurs yeux sa place de futur grand nom de la scène metalcore mondiale.

Spititbox ont définitivement réussi leur prestation, mais on aura malheureusement pas réussi à monter dans le train en leur compagnie. On se dit que notre deuxième concert de la tournée le lendemain nous fera peut être changer d’avis, mais on part se rafraichir un peu triste.  Côté public on sent que la prestation a marqué et on imagine aisément de belles têtes d’affiche à venir pour la formation canadienne. 

Le public est prêt pour le set des anglais mais voit débarquer sur la scène Paul Watson, fondateur de la Captain Paul Watson Foundation et Lamya Essemlali directrice de l’antenne française de Sea Shepherd pour un petit discours sur l’association et la protection des océans. Rien d’étonnant à ça quand on sait que Sam Carter est ambassadeur de l’antenne anglaise. Chaque intervention est largement applaudi par le public qui réserve un accueil de choix aux deux figures du mouvement.

Le rideau tombe et dévoile une scène sur trois étages avec sur le bord de chaque étage un écran géant. Au centre trône la batterie de Dan Searle, prêt à tout donner dès « Seeing Red » premier titre de ce set. Les fans hurlent les paroles du titre sorti tout récemment et démarrent de gros pits d’entrée de jeu. Sam Carter aura ce soir en plus de devoir assurer au chant la tache de monter et descendre plusieurs étages de multiples fois, autant dire que le passage à la salle le lendemain est inutile! Le groupe enchaîne rapidement avec « Giving Blood », puis « Deep Fake » issu du dernier album en date qui sera d’ailleurs très peu représenté ce soir.

On chante les paroles de chaque titre ravis de retrouver un de nos groupes favoris sur scène. Les visuels sur les écrans collent parfaitement aux morceaux et font de ce show des anglais le plus impressionnant qu’on a pu voir. Sam est en grande forme et nous impressionne en reprenant la partie de Winston McCall de Parkway Drive sur le désormais immanquable « Impermanence » avec brio! Retour en arrière pour la formation avec « Deathwish », morceau qui mine de rien a déjà 8 ans! Quelque soit la période du groupe représentée ce soir, les musiciens sont au sommet de leur art.

Ali Dean nous livre une prestation de folie tout au long du set alternant entre sa basse, ses claviers et ses drums pads. Première explosion de confettis de la soirée sur « Dead Butterflies », titre désormais mythique de la formation anglaise. Chaque petite pause est une occasion de plus pour le chanteur de remercier le public pour l’accueil, et de rappeler les valeurs d’inclusivité et chères au groupe. Evidemment le groupe rendra hommage à Tom Searle, disparu en 2016, avec le morceau « Doomsday », toujours un grand moment d’émotion pendant les concerts. La soirée continue de plus belle avec « Royal Beggars » puis l’immanquable « These Colours Don’t Run », morceau le plus ancien joué ce soir et qui fait toujours son petit effet.

On sent que la fin approche mais il reste encore « Meteor » avant le quel Sam nous incitera à danser comme si personne nous regardait. Chose que le public fera sans hésiter. « When We Were Young » clôture cette première partie de set de la plus belle des manières, mais le groupe revient rapidement en force avec « Nihilist » qu’on attendait clairement pas en début de rappel, mais dont on savourera chaque seconde. Puis la dernière explosion de confettis et de pits se fera sur le tubesque « Animals », repris évidemment en chœur par toute la salle parisienne.

Architects ont ce soir confirmé que les grandes salles sont désormais totalement à leur portée avec un show absolument dantesque. On quitte la salle ravis par cette performance et on donne rendez-vous au groupe sur les festivals d’été! Le groupe anglais frappe toujours fort sur scène et cette nouvelle date parisienne l’aura clairement démontré. On espère aussi une future tournée du groupe hors de Paris avec par exemple une date lilloise!

It’s off to the Zénith in Paris for the French leg of the big tour not to be missed at the start of the year: that of England’s Architects! The band, who have been going from strength to strength over the years, finally headlines the biggest venue in the Parc de la Villette for a concert we’ve been waiting for with bated breath. To accompany them, the band is joined by Canadians Spiritbox and their compatriots Loathe. The venue is packed to the rafters with over 5,000 people, and we’re in for an evening in the company of one of our flagship bands.

The stage is covered with a large black sheet, in front of which Loathe set up and kicked off with « Gored » from their album I Let It In And Took Everything. The vast majority of the audience are new to Loathe tonight, and to some extent we are too, having never seen the band live. The red strobes are at full power, so we can’t really see what’s going on on stage. But on the musical side, it’s a blast! On vocals, Kadeem France gave his all and warmed up the audience with his powerful voice tinged with a Liverpool accent. A real live performer, he makes the most of every square inch of his stage and doesn’t hesitate to switch things up between songs as the crowd gradually wakes up. What a pleasure it was to hear ‘Dance On My Skin’, a track from their debut album, which really took off in concert. The half-hour set flew by, with the first pits forming in the pit. The band left us with the excellent ‘Heavy Is The Head…’, which won over the Parisian audience with a shower of riffs, each more devastating than the last.

Loathe‘s performance lived up to all its promises, making us want to see the band again in a more intimate setting to get the most out of their live show. You can tell the band wanted to give it their all tonight, and it’s clearly mission accomplished!

Part of the big curtain falls to reveal a screen behind the instruments of Canada’s Spiritbox. From the very first note, you can tell that a large part of the audience is keen to catch up with the band led by Courtney LaPlante. The band’s logo is displayed on the screen and they start off with « Cellar Door », a song that the fans already know by heart. The band are full of energy and give it their all to get the crowd fired up before the English band’s set. We saw the band with Bring Me The Horizon last June, and it’s clear that the effect is not at all the same between the two performances. « The Void » and « Rotoscope » were obviously favoured by the moshpits in the pit, but on our side there was something of a downer. We didn’t enjoy the performance as much as last time, and found it hard to get into the adventure proposed by the Canadian band. On the now legendary « Yellowjacket », Sam Carter mixed his voice with Courtney‘s for a duet that worked very well. The fans were ecstatic, and the end of the set on « Hollyroller », after the band had thanked them for their warm welcome, gave them one last opportunity to get into a frenzy. The band left the stage to rapturous applause from the Parisian audience, confirming their place as a future big name on the world metalcore scene.

Spititbox definitely put on a good show, but unfortunately we didn’t manage to get on the train with them. We thought that our second concert of the tour the following day might change our minds, but we headed off to freshen up a bit sadly. As far as the audience was concerned, we could feel that the performance had made an impression, and it was easy to imagine that the Canadian band would be headlining many more shows in the future.

The audience was ready for the British band’s set, but Paul Watson, founder of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation, and Lamya Essemlali, director of Sea Shepherd‘s French branch, took to the stage to give a short speech on the association and ocean protection. Not surprising, given that Sam Carter is an ambassador for the UK branch. Each speech was widely applauded by the audience, who gave a warm welcome to the two figures from the movement.

The curtain fell to reveal a three-tiered stage with a giant screen on the edge of each tier. Dan Searle‘s drums take centre stage, and he’s ready to give it his all from « Seeing Red », the first track of the set. The fans screamed out the lyrics of the recently released track and started up some big pits right from the start. Sam Carter not only had to sing tonight, he also had to climb up and down several flights of stairs several times, so there would be no need to go the gym the the next day! The band quickly followed up with « Giving Blood », then « Deep Fake » from their latest album, which will be sparsely represented this evening.

We sing along to the lyrics of each track, delighted to see one of our favourite bands back on stage. The visuals on the screens fit the songs perfectly, making this the most impressive British show we’ve ever seen. Sam was in top form, impressing us with his brilliant cover of Winston McCall’s part from Parkway Drive on the now unmissable ‘Impermanence’! The band take a step back in time with « Deathwish », a song that is, after all, already 8 years old! Whatever period the band represent tonight, the musicians are at the top of their game.

Ali Dean gave a wild performance throughout the set, alternating between his bass, keyboards and drum pads. The first confetti explosion of the evening was on « Dead Butterflies », the English band’s now legendary song. Each short break was another opportunity for the singer to thank the audience for their warm welcome, and to reiterate the values of inclusivity so dear to the band. Naturally, the band paid tribute to Tom Searle, who died in 2016, with the song « Doomsday », always an emotional moment during a concert. The evening continued with a bang with ‘Royal Beggars’, followed by the unmissable ‘These Colours Don’t Run’, the oldest song played this evening and one that always has an effect.

You can feel the end approaching, but there’s still « Meteor » before which Sam encourages us to dance like nobody’s watching. Which the audience did without hesitation. « When We Were Young » brings the first half of the set to a close in the most beautiful of ways, but the band quickly come back in force with « Nihilist », which we clearly weren’t expecting at the start of the encore, but which we’ll savour every second of. Then came the final explosion of confetti and pits on the hit ‘Animals’, which the whole Parisian venue obviously sang along to.

Architects confirmed tonight that the big venues are now totally within their grasp with an absolutely Dantesque show. We left the venue delighted by this performance and we’ll be seeing the band at summer festivals! The English band always hit hard on stage, and this new Paris date was a clear demonstration of that. We’re also hoping for a future tour by the band outside Paris, with a show in Lille for example!
