#Album : Being As An Ocean – Death Can Wait (02/02/2024)

Being As An Ocean a parcouru du chemin depuis leur début en explorant différents styles tout en sortant hors de leurs zones de confort et en partageant avec nous leurs états d’esprits. Le groupe est maintenant un duo composé de Joel Quartuccio et Michael McGough, s’étant séparés de Tyler Ross et Ralph Sica, tous deux membres fondateurs, en 2021. Death Can Wait est leur premier album avec cette nouvelle formation. Il sortira le 2 février via Out Of Line Music.

Avec ce nouvel album, Being As An Ocean nous partage un moment plein d’émotions à travers leurs paroles. Le titre « Beautiful Agony » ouvre tranquillement avec le son de guitare saturés, une pause, avant l’arrivée du chant accompagné de quelques éléments électroniques. Le début de la chanson nous prend vraiment par la main pour nous guider vers cet album qui parle d’introspection, d’émotions, de douleurs… Le deuxième titre, « Swallowed By The Earth », a déjà été publié avec sa vidéo, nous permettant d’apprécier quelques moments de concert. À propos de leur single, le groupe a partagé: « Swallowed By The Earth pose la question de la manière dont nous trouvons du sens et de la signification dans nos épreuves. Est-ce qu’on les laisse nous submerger, nous consumer, nous vaincre, ou alors est-ce que nous les utilisons avec nos échecs comme des outils pour grandir ? Il s’agit de maintenir une persistance d’esprit.«

Lorsque nous cherchons la force pour combattre nos peines, « Purest Love » arrive au bon moment, commençant lentement avec une guitare lointaine avant d’être rejointe par les paroles plus parlées de Joel. Le refrain chanté reste en tête, prêt à vous accompagner pour votre journée. Les mots sont touchants, surtout lorsque certaines phrases comme « What a dream it is to call you my own » sont délivrées au seul rythme de la guitare. Pour continuer dans l’idée des paroles qui viennent d’être citées, « … Gave It A Voice So That My Heart Could Speak » est un morceau qui nous parle de la passion, de l’amour et de la persévérance. Elle nous permet d’apprécier des paroles encourageantes sur des riffs de guitare qui vous submergeront. La chanson « Gloom » m’a un peu surprise avec un début qui est beaucoup plus pop, jusqu’à un moment de rupture et l’arrivée de quelques screams. « Paradise In My Mind » suit très bien le titre précédent car il a aussi un peu plus une atmosphère de chanson pop. Il faut là aussi attendre un peu plus loin dans le morceau avant d’y retrouver un esprit plus rock.

« Snake » commence avec des paroles parlées douces et nous pouvons sentir l’intensité atteindre son maximum lorsque le mot « strike » est prononcé. La chanson est prête à exploser et à vous entraîner dans un mouvement de spirale avec un refrain accrocheur que vous pourrez facilement chanter lors des concerts! L’avant-dernière chanson est « Death Can Wait », un titre qui a été publié avec sa vidéo pour annoncer l’album. Le dernier titre « The Fulness of My Being » a tout ce dont nous avions besoin pour clôturer « Death Can Wait ». Commençant par des riffs de guitare lourds juste avant que les paroles de Joel ne sortent de la chanson sur quelque chose de plus calme. La fin de la dernière strophe semble parfaite pour terminer l’album, après tout ce voyage d’introspection et d’acceptation : « As I forsake my false sense of self, I embrace the fullness of my being” (Pendant que j’abandonne ma fausse perception de moi-même, j’embrasse la plénitude de mon être).

Avec leur annonce concernant l’album, le groupe a expliqué : « Death Can Wait parle de vivre dans l’instant, sans jugement ni peur des circonstances. Prendre chaque jour comme il vient, et ne pas trop compter sur l’avenir, car aucun de nous ne sait combien de temps nous avons réellement dans cette vie. Memento Mori. Il s’agit d’être conscient du cadeau qu’est la vie et de ne pas le gaspiller dans des excitations, distractions ou déviations frivoles ou excessives ; se concentrer sur nos objectifs, aspirations, passions et obsessions constructives. Vivre la vie comme si ce jour était notre dernier, tout en étant prêt à accueillir la Mort, quand elle arrive, comme une amie et une partie naturelle de cette belle vie. »

Death Can Wait est assez loin des débuts de Being As An Ocean avec Dear G-D (2012), mais il montre l’évolution du groupe à travers le temps et suit assez bien la direction prise avec leur cinquième album Proxy: An A.N.I.M.O. Story (2019). L’album dans l’ensemble est un mélange de nombreux styles comme des paroles parlées ou criées, des guitares saturées avec des riffs lourds, des sons électroniques, différents rythmes, etc., mais le tout fonctionne assez bien en tant qu’ensemble !

Death Can Wait is their first album with this new formation. It will be released on February 2nd via Out Of Line Music.

With this brand new album Being As An Ocean shares with us a moment full of emotions through their lyrics. It starts, with the title “Beautiful Agony”, slowly with saturated guitar sounds, a stop and then a voice with some electronics begins. The start of the song really takes our hand to lead us to this album full of introspection and emotional lyrics. The second title “Swallowed By The Earth” has already been released with its video, letting us appreciate some concert moments in it. About their single, the band said “Swallowed By The Earth is a question of how we find meaning and significance in our trials. Do we let them wash over us, consume us, let them defeat us, or do we use them and our failures as tools for growth? It is about keeping persistence of mindset.”

While we are looking for strength to fight our pain, “Purest Love” arrives at the right moment, beginning slowly with a guitar far away which is joined by Joel‘s spoken lyrics. The chorus is sung and catchy, ready to be your motivation through the day. The lyrics are touching, especially when some sentences like “What a dream it is to call you my own” are delivered on only the rhythm of the guitar. On the same note as the lyrics we just quoted, “… Gave It A Voice So That My Heart Could Speak” is a song about passion, love and perseverance. It lets us appreciate some urgent vocals on heavy guitar riffs that will overtake you. The song “Gloom” kind of surprised me with a start that was much more of the pop genre, until a small breakdown and the screams. “Paradise In My Mind” rightly follows the precedent title as it also has a little bit more of a pop song vibe with even less screamy lyrics. It is only through the end of the song that we have a total instrumental part for a moment with saturated guitar.

“Snake” starts with soft spoken lyrics and we can feel the pressure get to its top when the word “strike” is spoken. The song is ready to explode and bring you in a spiraling movement with a sticky chorus that we will be able to sing easily in live concerts! The second to last song is “Death Can Wait”, a title that was released with its video to announce the album. The last title is “The Fulness of My Being” and it has everything we needed to close Death Can Wait. Starting with heavy guitar riffs just before Joel’s spoken lyrics step out of the song on something calmer. The last stanza sentence seems perfect to end the album, after this whole journey of introspection and acceptance: “As I forsake my false sense of self, I embrace the fullness of my being”

With their announcement about the album, the band elaborated “Death Can Wait is about living in the moment, without judgment or fear of circumstance. Taking each day as it comes, and not banking too hard on the future, as none of us know how much time we truly have in this life. Memento Mori. It’s about being mindful of the gift that life is and not squandering it on frivolous or excessive excitements, distractions, diversions; being focused on our goals, aspirations, passions, and constructive obsessions. Living life as if this day is our last, while being prepared to greet Death, when it arrives, as a friend and natural part of this beautiful life.”

Death Can Wait is quite far from Being As An Ocean beginning with Dear G-D (2012), but it shows the evolution of the band through the time and rightly follows the direction taken with their fifth album Proxy: An A.N.I.M.O. Story (2019). The album overall is a mix of many things like spoken or screamed lyrics, saturated guitars with heavy riffs, electronic sounds, pummeling drums, etc but everything works pretty well as an ensemble!
