Entre pop et post punk, le duo d’Evreux Metro Verlaine s’est déjà fait un beau nom avec deux albums sortis en 2018 et 2022. Aujourd’hui le groupe nous revient avec un troisième album intitulé Pop Sauvage. L’album sera disponible dès le 9 février prochain via Le Cèpe Records. En moto, en voiture ou à pieds on vous invite à plonger avec nous dans ce nouveau voyage proposé par Raphaëlle et Axel.

La guitare du morceau titre nous met en route vers des terres américaines avec une pop boosté aux lignes de guitares délicieusement dansantes. La voix de Raphaëlle nous ramène du côté de la France avec son chant dans la langue de Molière. Ce premier titre est une belle introduction à la musique du groupe, véritable grand écart continental où les références se mêlent sans jamais se gêner. Quand on vous disait que le duo cherche à nous montrer toutes ses cartes avec brio, « Birthday Party » mêle rock, post punk et cold wave en donnant à chacun des styles une place de choix. Le chœurs d’Axel et sa maîtrise de la guitare font des titres de ce nouvel album de vraies réussites qu’on a envie de se repasser en boucle dès la première écoute.
On repart en « Mustang » pour y vivre pleinement cet « Amour d’Eté » et finir dans la « Piscine »! Ces trois titres montrent une fois encore que le duo sait où il va et veut nous amener avec lui vers des contrées musicales étonnantes. Les histoires racontées nous emportent et nous rappellent des scènes de nos vies comme les slows passionnés pendant nos vacances d’été. Sur « Hooligan » on retrouve très fort l’influence du post punk sur la musique du duo, tout en tenant là un des titres les plus mémorables de l’album.
Les deux derniers titres de l’album nous offrent là aussi un beau voyage dans les genres musicaux chères au duo. « Garden Of Love » et sa lenteur dansante assumée nous emporte du côté de Florence + The Machine tandis que « Waterloo » s’éloigne à moitié de son illustre homonyme avec des claviers bien présents dans l’intro mais une vibe bien post punk et une mélancolie assumée de bout en bout.
Avec Pop Sauvage, Metro Verlaine nous livrent un album qui fait fi des classifications et offre un véritable voyage musical aux auditeurs. Le duo alterne et fait coexister des genres très variés avec brio dans un album qu’on a envie de se repasser pour en déceler toutes les petites subtilités. Encore une fois la scène française a de belles pépites dans son sac et ce nouvel album de Metro Verlaine en est définitivement une !

Somewhere between pop and post-punk, Evreux duo Metro Verlaine have already made a name for themselves with two albums released in 2018 and 2022. Now the band are back with a third album entitled Pop Sauvage. The album will be available from the 9th of February via Le Cèpe Records. Whether you’re on your motorbike, by car or on foot, we invite you to join us on this new journey proposed by Raphaëlle and Axel.
The guitar on the title track takes us to American shores with a pop sound boosted by deliciously danceable guitar lines. Raphaëlle‘s vocals take us back to France, where she sings in the language of Molière. This first track is a fine introduction to the group’s music, a continental « grand écart » where references mingle without ever getting in each other’s way. When we said that the duo were trying to show us all their cards with brio, ‘Birthday Party’ mixes rock, post punk and cold wave, giving each style a place of choice. Axel’s backing vocals and mastery of the guitar make the tracks on this new album real successes that you’ll want to play over and over again from the first listen.
Then it’s back to the « Mustang » to live out this « Amour d’Eté » (summer fling) to the full, finishing in the « Piscine » (swimming pool) ! These three tracks show once again that the duo know where they’re going and want to take us with them to some amazing musical lands. The stories they tell carry us away and remind us of scenes from our own lives, like the passionate slows during our summer holidays. On ‘Hooligan’, the post-punk influence on the duo’s music comes through loud and clear, making it one of the most memorable tracks on the album.
The last two tracks on the album also take us on a fine voyage through the musical genres dear to the duo. « Garden Of Love », with its slow, danceable feel, takes us in the direction of Florence + The Machine, while « Waterloo » is halfway removed from its illustrious namesake, with keyboards in the intro but a post-punk vibe and melancholy throughout.
With Pop Sauvage, Metro Verlaine deliver an album that flouts classifications and takes listeners on a musical journey. The duo brilliantly alternate and coexist in a wide variety of genres on an album you’ll want to play over and over again to pick up on all the subtleties. Once again, the French music scene has some great nuggets up its sleeve, and this new Metro Verlaine album is definitely one of them!
