Au début des années 2000, Blackberry Smoke s’évertue à évoluer dans un rock sudiste rendu célèbre par des artistes comme Lynyrd Skynyrd ou ZZ Top, tout en y ajoutant par moment des nuances plus hard, funk et soul. C’est ce cocktail qui fait le succès du groupe jusqu’à nos jours, et qui s’est déjà concrétisé par sept albums studios, deux lives et de nombreux concerts et premières parties de luxe ! Ce 16 février 2024 sera l’occasion pour les fans du genre de découvrir le nouvel album des géorgiens, Be Right Here, sur le label Thirty Tigers.

“Dig A Hole” vient de suite nous présenter le son typique de Blackberry Smoke, composé de guitares aux doux accents bluesy, de synthés hypnotisants, de percussions donnant directement envie de danser, et d’une voix à mi-chemin entre rock et soul, très mélodieuse. La formule marche à merveille sur ce titre mid-tempo et sans fioritures, qui est une véritable mise en bouche donnant rapidement envie de découvrir la suite ! Le prochain titre, “Hammer And The Nail” , est plus rythmé, d’abord introduit par une guitare acoustique aux accents country, elle laisse vite place à un morceau qui donne envie de taper du pied et de chanter en choeur “sometimes you’re the hammer, sometimes you’re the nail”. Avec à peine trois minutes, on entre dans l’ambiance d’un morceau qui sent bon le bourbon et le bayou !
Avec “Like It Was Yesterday” et “Be So Lucky”, on retourne à des sonorités beaucoup plus classiques du rock sudiste, avec des passages de guitares au bottleneck, et des morceaux plus calmes et mélancoliques. “Azalea” nous plonge d’emblée dans une ambiance reposante, emprunte de psyché et qui inspire beaucoup un voyage dans la nature, à l’image d’un “Feral Roots” de Rival Sons. On s’imagine facilement écouter ce morceau avec attention autour d’un feu de camp en compagnie du groupe ! Pour un classic rock funky sur les bords, “Don’t Mind If I Do” fait son effet dès les premières secondes d’écoute ! Avec son piano tout droit sorti d’un saloon, on prend plaisir à écouter la voix incroyablement prenante de Charlie Starr. La fin de l’album se montre toute aussi riche, entre les émotions chantées sur le country / blues de “Other Side Of The Light” et les passages plus funk rock de “Little Bit Crazy” !
On retrouve dans cet album tout ce qui fait du rock sudiste un style intemporel et incroyablement riche derrière sa simplicité apparente. Un style auquel Blackberry Smoke a su rendre hommage depuis quelques albums déjà, tout en y apportant sa personnalité, sans artifice mais avec un mélange d’émotions, parfois mélancoliques et tristes, parfois plus heureuses, propres aux sujets abordés dans le rock sudiste. La véritable richesse du groupe se ressent dans la composition et le mix, qui laisse respirer les instruments pour qu’ils soient mis en valeur à tour de rôle, chacun ayant leur place dans les morceaux ! Pour les amateurs du genre, je vous conseille vivement de vous procurer l’album qui sera sans aucun doute une de vos futures écoutes en boucle ces prochains mois !

In the early 2000s, Blackberry Smoke set out to develop the kind of Southern rock made famous by the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top, while at times adding more hard rock, funk and soul. It’s this cocktail that has ensured the band’s success to this day, with seven studio albums, two live shows and a host of luxury concerts and support acts to their name! On the 16th of February 2024, fans of the genre will be able to discover the Georgians’ new album, Be Right Here, on the Thirty Tigers label.
« Dig A Hole » immediately introduces us to the typical Blackberry Smoke sound, with its soft bluesy guitars, hypnotising synths, danceable percussion and melodious vocals halfway between rock and soul. The formula works perfectly on this mid-tempo, no-frills track, which is a real appetiser that makes you want to discover the rest! The next track, ‘Hammer And The Nail’ The next track, « Hammer And The Nail », is a more rhythmic affair, beginning with a country-tinged acoustic guitar and quickly giving way to a foot-stomping, sing-along « sometimes you’re the hammer, sometimes you’re the nail ». At just three minutes, you’re in the mood for a song that smells of bourbon and bayou!
Like It Was Yesterday » and « Be So Lucky » take us back to a much more classic Southern rock sound, with bottleneck guitar passages and calmer, more melancholy tracks. « Azalea » plunges us straight into a restful, psychedelic ambience, akin to Rival Sons‘ « Feral Roots ». It’s easy to imagine listening to this track around a campfire with the band! For a classic rock with a funky edge, « Don’t Mind If I Do » hits the spot from the first few seconds of listening! With its piano straight out of a saloon, it’s a pleasure to listen to Charlie Starr‘s incredibly gripping voice. The end of the album is just as rich, between the emotions sung on the country/blues of « Other Side Of The Light » and the more funk rock passages of « Little Bit Crazy »!
This album has everything that makes Southern rock a timeless and incredibly rich style behind its apparent simplicity. It’s a style that Blackberry Smoke have been paying homage to for a few albums now, while bringing their own personality to it, without artifice but with a mix of emotions, sometimes melancholy and sad, sometimes happier, typical of the subjects dealt with in Southern rock. The real richness of the band is to be found in the composition and the mix, which allows the instruments to breathe so that they are highlighted in turn, each having their place in the tracks! For fans of the genre, I urge you to get hold of this album, which will undoubtedly be one of your future listens over the next few months!
