Une vingtaine d’années de carrière, rythmée par sept albums studios et de nombreux concerts, ce sont autant de choses (et sûrement plus !) que Crazy Lixx souhaite célébrer avec la sortie de Two Shots At Glory, album reprenant les morceaux incontournables des premiers CDs du groupe, agrémentés de nouveaux morceaux composés pour l’occasion ! Avec une activité aussi riche de la part d’un des fers de lance du mouvement glam / sleaze scandinave des années 2000, inutile de vous dire que j’étais impatient de pouvoir découvrir cette nouvelle sortie sur le label Frontiers Music!

On découvre de suite le morceau éponyme, qui s’impose directement comme un futur classique du groupe. On y retrouve tout ce qui fait de Crazy Lixx un groupe unique en son genre : le timbre de voix de Danny Rexon si particulier accompagné de choeurs au mixage très 80s, des solos de guitare omniprésents (pour le bonheur de nos oreilles !), le tout saupoudré de paroles qui s’ancrent en tête immédiatement. Le résultat est là, on est conquis d’entrée de jeu ! À la suite, on peut découvrir le premier des neuf titres ré-enregistrés en 2023, et déjà présenté depuis quelques mois déjà sous forme d’UST (Unofficial Sound Track) du film The Accused de 1988 : “Fire It Up”. Le morceau, initialement publié sur l’album Riot Avenue en 2012, a été revu avec un son beaucoup plus ample et moderne, avec un tempo légèrement accéléré et globalement, on sent que les qualités de producteur de Danny Rexon sont passées par là pour ré-arranger ce classique du groupe et l’adapter aux sonorités actuelles du groupe.
“Invincible”, le deuxième des trois titres composés spécialement pour l’album, rentre directement en tête avec un refrain ravageur secondé par des harmonies de guitare cristallines ! On s’imagine dans un B.O de film aux accents 80s, quoi de plus normal après avoir retrouvé le groupe en bande son de la série Peacemaker de James Gunn (aux côtés d’autres nombreux groupes glam / sleaze scandinaves). Le troisième titre exclusif, “Sword And Stone”, est une reprise d’un titre de Bonfire (mais initialement composé et présent sur les démos de l’album Crazy Nights de Kiss). Crazy Lixx rend hommage au titre en proposant une version plus actuelle, avec des choeurs plus aigus et moins caverneux, toujours plus glam ! On retrouve aussi tout au long de l’album les classiques des premiers albums du groupe : “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”, “Lights Out !”, “Church Of Rock” ou encore “Riot Avenue”, pour la plupart eux aussi présentés sous forme d’UST de films 80s ou de séries B, dans des versions 2023 qui donnent envie !
Cet album sous forme de “best-of boosté” est une véritable pépite à mettre entre les mains de tous les fans du groupe pour les faire patienter jusqu’au prochain album de compositions originales, mais aussi une excellente porte d’entrée pour tous les novices du genre qui seraient en recherche d’un album où le plaisir immédiat est le maître mot ! En effet, si l’efficacité du groupe n’est plus à prouver quand on les voit en live (comme j’en ai eu l’occasion par trois fois déjà), le groupe s’en sort aussi très bien sur album avec une ré-actualisation des morceaux qui ont créé sa renommé depuis maintenant une vingtaine d’années !

A career spanning some twenty years, punctuated by seven studio albums and numerous concerts, these are just some of the many things (and surely more!) that Crazy Lixx wish to celebrate with the release of Two Shots At Glory, an album featuring the essential tracks from the band’s first CDs, enhanced by new tracks written for the occasion! With so much going on from one of the spearheads of the Scandinavian glam / sleaze movement in the 2000s, needless to say, I couldn’t wait to discover this new release on the Frontiers Music label!
We immediately discover the eponymous track, which immediately establishes itself as a future classic from the band. It’s got everything that makes Crazy Lixx such a unique band: Danny Rexon‘s distinctive vocal timbre accompanied by 80s-style backing vocals, omnipresent guitar solos (to the delight of our ears!), all sprinkled with lyrics that get stuck in our heads immediately. The results are there for all to enjoy! Next up is ‘Fire It Up’, the first of nine tracks re-recorded in 2023, and already released a few months ago as a UST (Unofficial Sound Track) from the 1988 film The Accused. The track, originally released on the Riot Avenue album in 2012, has been given a much fuller, more modern sound, with a slightly faster tempo, and overall you can feel that Danny Rexon‘s skills as a producer have gone into rearranging this band classic and adapting it to the band’s current sound.
« Invincible », the second of the three tracks written especially for the album, is straight into your head with its devastating chorus backed by crystal-clear guitar harmonies! It’s like being in a film soundtrack with an 80s flavour, and what could be more natural after finding the band on the soundtrack of James Gunn‘s Peacemaker series (alongside a host of other Scandinavian glam / sleaze bands). The third exclusive track, ‘Sword And Stone’, is a cover of a Bonfire song (originally composed and featured on the demos for Kiss’ Crazy Nights album). Crazy Lixx pays homage to the track with a more contemporary version, featuring higher-pitched, less cavernous backing vocals – and all the more glam! The album also features classics from the band’s early albums: « Whiskey Tango Foxtrot », « Lights Out! », « Church Of Rock » and « Riot Avenue », most of which are also presented in the form of USTs from 80s films or B-movies, in 2023 versions that make you want more!
This album, in the form of a ‘boosted best-of’, is a real nugget to be put in the hands of all the band’s fans to keep them waiting until the next album of original compositions, but also an excellent gateway for all those new to the genre who are looking for an album where immediate pleasure is the key word! Indeed, while the band’s effectiveness is unquestionable when you see them live (as I’ve already had the opportunity to do three times), they also do very well on album, updating the tracks that have made their reputation over the last twenty years!
