Impatient de découvrir Dirty Honey en live après avoir chroniqué leur dernier album en date, Can’t Find The Brakes, en fin d’année 2023, c’est avec un plaisir non dissimulé que je me préparais pour ce concert au Kavka Oudaan d’Anvers qui s’annonce particulièrement prometteur ! Bonne surprise quelques jours avant : les belges de Wildheart ouvrent la soirée pour le plus grand bonheur des fans de hard rock 80s. Les ayant déjà vu plusieurs fois, notamment au Wildfest (festival glam / sleaze / AOR en Belgique) où ils sont récurrents sur l’affiche, je le sais maintenant : je vais passer une soirée inoubliable, allons voir à quel point !

Dès 20h, Wildheart fait son entrée en scène sur un fond sonore donnant une ambiance épique, avant d’entamer leur show sur “A Stranger’s Eyes”, nous plongeant directement dans leur hard rock 80s teinté de sonorités qu’on sent influencées par Skid Row, Scorpions et Whitesnake. Les guitaristes enchaînent riffs donnant envie de headbanguer et solos qu’on a envie de reproduire avec sa air guitar, pendant que Farty nous délivre un chant clean entre mediums et aigus parfaitement maitrisés ! Le public qui ne les connaît pas encore ne reste pas sur ses gardes très longtemps et reprend rapidement en choeurs les différents refrains du groupe. Au cours d’un set de quarante cinq minutes environ, on retrouve des morceaux des deux albums du groupe à peu près à parts égales, dont “Lovehunter”, le morceau éponyme du dernier album “No Love” ou l’excellent “Never Let Go” que le public reprend en chœurs. Au cours de la prestation du groupe, une chose est frappante : l’aisance du groupe à délivrer sa musique et à investir le public ! On pourrait tout à fait penser que la soirée est un co-headlining tellement le groupe est professionnel dans sa démarche, et tellement le public semble investi derrière le groupe. Wildheart a le mérite d’avoir ouvert la soirée de la meilleure des manières possibles et d’avoir chauffé la salle, qui doit maintenant faire avec la chaleur accumulée pour attendre Dirty Honey une petite demie-heure.
A peine 21h passé, et à l’image de ceux déjà affichés dans le public grâce au début de soirée plus que réussi, le sourire (logo du groupe) en 3D trônant en fond de scène s’illumine alors que les californiens font leur entrée en scène avec “Rock’N’Roll Damnation” d’AC/DC en fond sonore avant d’entamer leur set sur le morceau donnant son titre à la tournée en cours, “Can’t Find the Brakes”. Le tout est plus que convaincant et tout ce qui fait la force du groupe en album est ici magnifié : la voix de Marc LaBelle est magnifique et affiche un mélange de hard rock aux couleurs bluesy particulièrement entrainant, le duo basse batterie composé de Justin Smolian et Jaydon Bean appui un rythme que l’on sent à de nombreuses reprises inspiré par Led Zeppelin, et John Notto délivre à tour de rôle riffs et solos avec une vibe old school à laquelle on adhère sans broncher ! La première partie du concert est l’occasion de faire un tour d’horizon de la discographie du groupe avec des morceaux comme “California Dreamin”, “Heartbreaker” ou encore “Dirty Mind”, le tout au son tantôt hard, tantôt funky, mais toujours ultra entraînant du groupe.
Un passage acoustique vient alors avec la ballade “Coming Home (Ballad of the Shire)” issue du dernier album, où on peux voir Justin Smolian s’emparer d’une guitare acoustique à la place de sa basse pour accompagner John Notto et interpréter la mélodie principale du morceau. Je tombe directement sous le charme du morceau en live, qui prend une véritable ampleur et a une saveur particulière lorsque tout le public se met à reprendre en choeurs “Cause I’m coming home”. Le morceau est suivi d’une reprise du classique “Honky Tonk Women” des Rolling Stones qui apportera un côté plus dansant et presque rockabilly de par son interprétation en acoustique !
Après cette parenthèse acoustique, retour à un set très électrique faisant place à l’énergie inépuisable du groupe avec “Don’t Put Out the Fire” , la reprise de Prince “Let’s Go Crazy”, jusqu’à “When I’m Gone” où le chanteur déclare qu’il serait ridicule de faire une fausse sortie de scène pour un rappel (la disposition de la salle ne le permettant pas vraiment) et que le groupe va donc directement délivrer une nouvelle salve de morceaux. C’est ainsi qu’on a l’occasion d’utiliser nos dernières forces pour reprendre en choeurs les différents refrains de “Won’t Take Me Alive”, “You Make It All Right” et enfin “Rolling 7s” avant que le groupe ne quitte la scène sous les ovations du public qui dureront de longues minutes !
Participer à cette soirée était plein de promesses, et y assister aura répondu à toutes mes attentes ! La qualité du son est à souligner et cela a permis de découvrir la richesse de chacun des groupes tout au long de la soirée. Wildheart et Dirty Honey ont délivré des sets rythmés et variés qui ont su ravir le public présent sur place en propageant la joie et la bonne humeur à coup de riffs de guitares et de refrains qui entrent directement en tête. Merci à Kavka Oudaan pour l’accueil, et à l’équipe de Sonic Excess pour m’avoir accordé la possibilité de couvrir l’évènement et pour l’accueil très chaleureux dès mon arrivée !
Impatient to discover Dirty Honey live after reviewing their latest album, Can’t Find The Brakes, at the end of 2023, it was with undisguised pleasure that I prepared myself for this concert at the Kavka Oudaan in Antwerp, which promises to be particularly promising! A pleasant surprise a few days before: Belgian band Wildheart opened the evening to the delight of 80s hard rock fans. Having already seen them several times, notably at Wildfest (a glam / sleaze / AOR festival in Belgium) where they’re a regular feature on the bill, I now know: I’m in for an unforgettable evening – let’s find out just how unforgettable!

At 8pm, Wildheart take to the stage to a background of epic sounds, before kicking off their show with ‘A Stranger’s Eyes’, plunging us straight into their 80s hard rock tinged with sounds influenced by Skid Row, Scorpions and Whitesnake. The guitarists string together headbanging riffs and solos that make you want to reproduce them with your air guitar, while Farty delivers clean vocals with perfectly mastered medium and high notes! The audience, unfamiliar with the band, didn’t stay on their guard for long, quickly singing along to the band’s various choruses. The forty-five minute set featured songs from both the band’s albums in roughly equal parts, including « Lovehunter », the eponymous track from their latest album « No Love » and the excellent « Never Let Go », which the audience sang along to. During the band’s performance, one thing was striking: the ease with which they delivered their music and took over the audience! You’d be forgiven for thinking that this was a co-headlining evening, such was the professionalism of the band’s approach, and such was the audience’s commitment to the band. Wildheart had the merit of opening the evening in the best possible way and warming up the room, which now had to make do with the accumulated heat to wait half an hour for Dirty Honey.
Barely 9pm later, and just like those already in the audience thanks to a very successful start to the evening, the 3D smile (the band’s logo) at the back of the stage lights up as the Californians take to the stage with AC/DC‘s « Rock’N’Roll Damnation » playing in the background before starting their set with the title track of their current tour, « Can’t Find the Brakes ». The whole thing is more than convincing, and everything that makes the band so strong on album is magnified here: Marc LaBelle‘s voice is magnificent, with a blend of hard rock and bluesy tones that’s particularly catchy, the bass/drums duo of Justin Smolian and Jaydon Bean support a rhythm that feels inspired by Led Zeppelin on many occasions, and John Notto delivers riffs and solos in turn with an old school vibe that you can’t resist! The first part of the concert was an opportunity to survey the band’s discography, with tracks like « California Dreamin », « Heartbreaker » and « Dirty Mind », all set to the band’s sometimes hard, sometimes funky, but always ultra catchy sound.
An acoustic passage then follows with the ballad « Coming Home (Ballad of the Shire) » from the latest album, where we see Justin Smolian take up an acoustic guitar instead of his bass to accompany John Notto and play the main melody of the song. I immediately fell under the spell of this live track, which really takes off and has a special flavour when the whole audience starts singing along to « Cause I’m coming home ». The song is followed by a cover of the Rolling Stones classic « Honky Tonk Women », which brings a more danceable, almost rockabilly feel to the acoustic rendition!
After this acoustic interlude, it was back to a very electric set, giving way to the band’s inexhaustible energy with « Don’t Put Out the Fire », Prince‘s cover of « Let’s Go Crazy », and « When I’m Gone », where the singer declared that it would be ridiculous to make a false exit from the stage for an encore (the layout of the venue didn’t really allow it) and that the band would therefore deliver a new salvo of songs straight away. This is how we get the chance to use our last bit of strength to sing along to the various choruses of « Won’t Take Me Alive », « You Make It All Right » and finally « Rolling 7s » before the band leave the stage to a standing ovation from the audience that lasts for several long minutes!
Taking part in this evening was full of promise, and attending it fulfilled all my expectations! The quality of the sound was outstanding, allowing us to discover the richness of each of the bands throughout the evening. Wildheart and Dirty Honey delivered rhythmic and varied sets that delighted the audience, spreading joy and good humour with guitar riffs and choruses that went straight to your head. Thanks to Kavka Oudaan for hosting the event, and to the Sonic Excess team for giving me the opportunity to cover it and for the warm welcome I received on arrival!
