Six ans après leur dernier album Shikantaza, Chinese Man sont de retour avec un album retour au source. Intitulé We’ve Been Here Before est une ode au son qui ont forgé toute la force de Chinese Man depuis leur début, sur une thématique de renouveau. C’est dans un genre quasiment inqualifiable qu’on s’aventure entre hip hop, trip hop, parfois dub avec un nombre fou d’orchestration.

Après avoir chacun évolué dans leurs projets respectifs, les trois comparses High Ku, Matteo & Sly reviennent, avec force. L’album débute sur un morceau presque orchestral, à la découverte d’un nouveau monde.  C’est sur le titre éponyme que l’on trouve ce beat hip hop embaumant l’atmosphère pour un titre calme, posé mais surtout rentrant en tête comme une comptine. Le calme s’échappe très vite avec « ¡Que Sí! » qui a la force de nous faire danser instantanément. Sous une vibe de morceau de l’été, on se mets à danser sous les percussions et le beau trio de cuivre saxophone, trompette et trombone. Mais cela n’est qu’un avant goût DU titre dansant de l’album, à savoir « Trouble ». Basé une un sample de doudouk, instrument traditionnel arménien, « Trouble » sera l’hymne de cet album, sublimé par le flow de Stylo G.

Le titre instrumental « Cycle » vient piocher en nous, fan de post-rock et de long morceaux instrumentaux, un vrai univers qui se construit autour de nous. Le tout curieux « Too Late » que l’apprentissage de la vie se fait. Discussion entre un père disparu et sa fille, l’émotion est au coeur des discussions, sous sa casquette mélancolique et pourtant si joyeuse. Les morceaux s’enchainent mais ne se ressemble pas. « The Code » reprends les codes du hip-hop. Il faut dire que le casting est parfait pour l’exercice. ASM, Stogie T, KT Gorique, Youthstar et Miscellaneous mélangeront hip hop en anglais, en français, beau scratch avec beau sample électronique. C’est avec des instruments nous venant des pays chauds que l’on embarque ensuite avec « Where I Go ». Le voyage musical est d’une richesse folle. Avant de sombrer dans une sorte de polar sombre avec « Fidelio » et ce piano inquiétant qui nous emménera jusqu’à la lune.

La France peut être fière d’avoir un groupe comme Chinese Man, qui ne cesse de nous offrir des réelles propositions musicales, piochant les plus belles essences dans les musiques du monde. Magicien des sonorités, le trio est époustoufflant dans cet album. Un grand bravo !

Six years after their last album Shikantaza, Chinese Man are back with an album that returns to their roots. Entitled We’ve Been Here Before, it’s an ode to the sound that has forged Chinese Man’s strength since their inception, with a theme of renewal. It’s an almost unquantifiable genre, a mix of hip hop, trip hop and sometimes dub, with an insane amount of orchestration.

After evolving in their respective projects, the three friends High Ku, Matteo & Sly are back with a vengeance. The album opens with an almost orchestral track, the discovery of a new world. It’s on the eponymous track that we find the hip-hop beat scenting the atmosphere for a calm, composed track, but above all one that gets stuck in your head like a nursery rhyme. The calm is quickly broken with « ¡Que Sí! », which has the power to make you dance instantly. With the vibe of a summer song, we start dancing to the percussion and the beautiful trio of saxophone, trumpet and trombone. But that’s just a foretaste of the album’s danceable title track, ‘Trouble’. Based on a sample of the doudouk, a traditional Armenian instrument, ‘Trouble’ will be the anthem of this album, sublimated by Stylo G‘s flow.

The instrumental track « Cycle » taps into a real universe that’s building around us as fans of post-rock and long instrumental tracks. The curious « Too Late » is about learning about life. A discussion between a disappeared father and his daughter, emotion is at the heart of the discussions, under its melancholic yet joyful cap. The tracks follow on from one another but don’t sound the same. « The Code » takes up the codes of hip-hop. It has to be said that the cast is perfect for the exercise. ASM, Stogie T, KT Gorique, Youthstar and Miscellaneous mix hip-hop in English and French, with beautiful scratches and electronic samples. Where I Go » takes us on a musical journey with instruments from warmer climes. The musical journey is insanely rich. Before sinking into a kind of dark detective story with « Fidelio » and that disturbing piano that will take us to the moon.

France can be proud to have a group like Chinese Man, who never cease to offer us real musical propositions, drawing the finest essences from world music. Magicians of sounds, the trio is breathtaking on this album. Well done!
