L’année 2013 à Utrecht aux Pays-Bas voyait la naissance du groupe de doom Angmodnes. Il aura fallu au groupe neuf ans pour peaufiner un premier album qui aura largement conquis le public. En ce début d’année le trio néerlandais nous propose de découvrir son deuxième album. Intitulé Rot Of The Soul, il sera disponible dès le 1er mars via Meuse Music Records et Tragedy Productions. Initialement formé comme un duo, le groupe de Y.S. et M.V. s’est vu renforcée d’une troisième membre en la personne de F.S., déjà présente sur l’album précédent.

Après une intro magistrale avec des chœurs qu’on devine être ceux de F.S. les guitares, la basse et la voix de Y.S. ainsi que la batterie de M.V. ne rejoignent le tout pour une plongée abyssale dans la noirceur d’un esprit détruit par la dépression. Ici la voix caverneuse du chanteur nous emporte et vient parfaitement compléter les parties musicales magistrales jouées seulement par les deux musiciens. Le funeral doom du groupe nous prend à la gorge et ne nous lâche pas pendant plus d’une dizaine de minutes. Les parties en chant clair accompagnées de la voix douce de F.S. ne sont qu’un espoir de lumière dans un monde brulé par un soleil destructeur qui ne nous laisse aucune chance. En un titre le groupe néerlandais nous livre déjà un exemple frappant de ce que les talents combinés des trois musicnen.ne.s peuvent donner. On repart ensuite pour une nouvelle plongée dans la vie de notre personnage avec une belle démonstration par la musique des heures passées aphasique où la culpabilité de ne rien faire de sa journée nous ronge et nous fait descendre toujours plus profond dans une dépression toujours plus prenante et destructrice. Un morceau difficile sublimé par des parties instrumentales aussi lentes que dévastatrices où le batterie semble représenter les cœurs ralentis par l’inactivité subie, avec une apparition remarquée d’un piano assez doux en début de morceau qui contraste avec le reste de la composition.
Avec « Agony Of The Sun » et « Stagnant » le trio continue de nous livrer un funeral doom qui sait s’extirper quand il le faut d’un genre assez codifié. Mais on garde toujours cette force de frape musicale qui nous laisse stupéfait à chaque instant. Le mélange des voix hurlées et claires sur le premier d’entre eux touche au cœur et montre à quel point le trio sait venir nous chercher avec une musique toujours plus emplie d’émotions fortes. Le dernier morceau donne aux trois néerlandais une dernière occasion de nous livrer leur tout meilleur. Une fois encore le mélange des voix et des instrumentations entre douceur et puissance est une merveille pour les oreilles et un parfait moment de contemplation triste pour nos âmes. La partie parlée nous livre les ultimes pensées de notre personnage, toujours meurtri par sa dépression se rendant compte de l’impact que son mal-être a sur les personnes autour de lui.
Avec Rot of The Soul, Angmodnes nous livrent un album prenant et très émouvant, laissant la part belle à une musique toujours sur la corde raide entre funeral doom brut et parties de piano envoutantes. La noirceur de sa thématique n’a d’égale que la beauté des compositions qui viennent toutes résonner au plus profond de nos esprits. Un album à écouter posément et au casque pour que ce nouvel opus des néerlandais vous cueille totalement.

2013 saw the birth of doom band Angmodnes in Utrecht, the Netherlands. It took the band nine years to put the finishing touches to a debut album that won over the public. Now, at the start of the new year, the Dutch trio have released their second album. Entitled Rot Of The Soul, it will be available from 1 March via Meuse Music Records and Tragedy Productions. Initially formed as a duo, the group of Y.S. and M.V. has now added a third member in the person of F.S., already present on the previous album.
After a masterful intro with backing vocals that we guess are those of F.S., the guitars, bass and voice of Y.S. and the drums of M.V. join forces for an abysmal plunge into the darkness of a mind destroyed by depression. Here, the singer’s cavernous voice carries us away and perfectly complements the masterful musical parts played only by the two musicians. The band’s funeral doom grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go for over ten minutes. The clean vocals, accompanied by F.S.‘s gentle voice, are a hope of light in a world burnt by a destructive sun that leaves us no chance. In just one track, the Dutch band have already given us a striking example of what the combined talents of three musicians can achieve. Then it’s back to the plunge into our character’s life with a fine musical demonstration of the hours spent aphasic, where the guilt of doing nothing all day gnaws at us and drives us deeper and deeper into an ever more gripping and destructive depression. It’s a difficult track, sublimated by instrumental parts as slow as they are devastating, where the drums seem to represent the hearts slowed down by the inactivity they suffer, with a noticeable appearance of a gentle piano at the beginning of the track, contrasting with the rest of the composition.
With « Agony Of The Sun » and « Stagnant », the trio continue to deliver funeral doom that breaks away from a fairly codified genre when necessary. But there’s always that force of musical fracas that leaves you stunned at every turn. The mix of screamed and clear vocals on the first track touches the heart and shows just how much the trio know how to reach out to us with music that’s ever more full of strong emotions. The final track gives the Dutch trio one last chance to deliver their very best. Once again, the mix of voices and instrumentations, between softness and power, is a marvel for the ears and a perfect moment of sad contemplation for our souls. The spoken part delivers the final thoughts of our character, still bruised by his depression and realising the impact his malaise is having on the people around him.
With Rot of The Soul, Angmodnes deliver a gripping, deeply moving album, featuring music that’s always on the tightrope between raw funeral doom and bewitching piano parts. The darkness of their themes is matched only by the beauty of their compositions, all of which resonate deep within our minds. This is an album to be listened to calmly and with headphones, so that this new opus from the Dutch band captures you completely.
