En cette fin février 2024 est sorti le nouvel album de Amaranthe, The Catalyst. Septième album de la formation suédoise, il pousse encore plus loin le mélange entre métal et sonorités pop et électroniques. Pour en savoir plus sur sa création, ses thématiques et l’évolution du groupe nous avons pu poser quelques questions à Olof Mörck, guitariste, claviériste et fondateur du groupe.

Victor : Amaranthe est un groupe depuis quinze ans maintenant (ils s’appelaient Avalanche au début, ndlr), que ressens-tu à l’idée de continuer à travailler sur de la nouvelle musique avec ce groupe après tant d’années ?

Olof : D’un côté, c’est fou de penser que cela fait déjà quinze ans, parce que c’est une partie importante de notre vie. Et en même temps, on a l’impression que le temps est passé très vite. Nous avons écrit les premières chansons en 2008 et en 2011, nous étions déjà en tournée avec notre premier album et nous sortions des singles à la radio. Ça a été une aventure vraiment folle ! Et tu sais, la première fois que nous avons eu le temps de prendre du recul et de digérer tout ce qui s’est passé au cours des dix dernières années, c’était pendant la pandémie de Covid, qui a été une période terrible pour tout le monde, y compris pour nous, car nous n’avons pas pu partir en tournée avec notre nouvel album. Le petit avantage pour nous, c’est que nous avons eu le temps de réfléchir à la manière d’aller de l’avant. Nous avons réalisé pas mal de choses depuis nos débuts et c’est un sentiment incroyable!

Victor : En 2022, vous avez repris la tournée avec votre album Manifest. Comment s’est passé votre retour sur scène ?

Olof : C’était une chose énorme, et l’un des moments les plus forts de toute notre carrière. Nous avons joué au Sweden Rock Festival pendant l’été 2022 et nous avons joué ces chansons que nous n’avions jamais jouées auparavant, c’était dans notre pays d’origine et nous avions beaucoup d’amis dans le public, c’était vraiment un sentiment monumental que les choses reprennent pour de bon. Nous ne savions pas si les choses allaient s’arrêter à nouveau à l’automne, mais tout le monde avait l’intuition que c’était le moment où tout allait revenir à la normale. Nous avons participé à des festivals tout au long de l’été et nous avions réservé une tournée avec Beyond The Black pour l’automne. Tout a donc recommencé à rouler et nous en étions très heureux !

Victor : À cette époque, vous venez de sortir l’album Manifest. Quelle a été la réaction des fans à ces nouvelles chansons ?

Olof : C’était vraiment phénoménal, parce que nous croyons beaucoup en cet album ! Manifest a été créé en 2020, juste après que nous ayons terminé la tournée avec Sabaton en Europe. Beaucoup de chansons ont été écrites pendant cette période et nous nous sommes beaucoup inspirés de cette tournée dans toutes ces grandes arénas. Nous avons pris l’énergie et nous en avons fait de la musique. C’était un sentiment très énergique et un album très entrainant  à cause de cela. La conséquence est que c’est l’album qui a eu le plus de succès à ce jour. C’est celui qui s’est le mieux vendu, qui marche le mieux en streaming? Il contient les chansons les plus streamées de notre carrière. Et elles sont devenues des classiques instantanés, les fans réagissant très bien à ces chansons lors des concerts. Donc, il n’y a eu que des bonnes choses pour nous avec cet album!

Victor : Votre nouvel album The Catalyst est le premier avec Mikael Sehlin au chant hurlé. Comment était-ce de travailler avec une nouvelle personne dans le groupe pour ce nouvel album ? Cela a-t-il changé quelque chose à votre façon de travailler sur la musique ?

Olof : Cela nous est venu assez naturellement. Nous avons commencé à lui parler du groupe, et il a accepté de nous rejoindre au début de l’année dernière, au moment où nous commencions à enregistrer le nouvel album. J’avais seulement écrit un modèle pour les growls, mais je n’avais pas fini ces parties à fond. Dès que j’ai su que nous allions travailler avec lui, et parce qu’il a grandi non loin de l’endroit d’où venait notre précédent growler et qu’ils se connaissaient, ils ont un style très similaire, donc une grande partie du processus m’a rappelé quand j’ai travaillé avec Henrik sur les albums précédents. C’était vraiment intéressant de voir quelle est sa personnalité spécifique. Nous avons ajouté des choses que nous n’avions jamais essayées auparavant et il est fort probable que nous utilisions davantage ses spécialités à l’avenir. Sur « Damnation Flame », il a ajouté beaucoup de notes aiguës aux growls, ce qui était complètement nouveau pour nous.

Victor : Amaranthe a, pour moi, son propre style musical. Ayant travaillé sur tous les albums, comment penses-tu que la musique que vous avez créée reflète ce que tu veux pour le groupe ?

Olof : Nous avons décidé au départ que nous voulions une musique puissante, mais cela signifie beaucoup de choses différentes. Il y a des tonnes de morceaux métal puissants mais il y a aussi des tonnes de chansons pop puissantes que même les gens qui n’écoutent pas de pop aiment vraiment. C’est ce que nous avons décidé très tôt. Et je pense qu’en écrivant la toute première chanson, nous avons déjà essayé de garder l’esprit ouvert sur ce que nous faisions sans vraiment en parler. Et quand nous avons entendu Elize chanter des ad-libs que l’on entend normalement dans une chanson pop avec de gros riffs, nous avons su que nous tenions quelque chose de vraiment spécial. Nous savions alors que nous avions quelque chose de vraiment unique, mais qui fonctionne aussi très bien. Ces combinaisons se fondent les unes dans les autres de manière assez évidente. Nous avons continué à faire cela tout au long de notre carrière. En 2016, nous avons eu cette chanson intitulée  » That Song « , où l’on retrouve l’influence de Queen et peut-être un peu de Rihanna dans le chant d’Elize. Nous avons adoré l’enregistrer, et nous nous sommes dit « allons-y, ça marche ! ».

Victor : Beaucoup de chansons du nouvel album sont très entraînantes, sauf « Stay A Little While » qui est beaucoup plus douce. Comment était-ce de travailler sur cette chanson après avoir créé autant de chansons puissantes pour cet album ?

Olof : Nous aimons les contrastes en général, donc travailler sur quelque chose de vraiment différent de toutes les autres chansons était vraiment excitant. Elize et moi nous envoyions des messages et elle a suggéré que nous travaillions sur une ballade. J’ai trouvé l’idée géniale et je lui ai demandé si elle avait des idées. Je suis allé dîner et je suis revenu tard dans la soirée, trop tard pour commencer à travailler sur une nouvelle chanson, et Elize m’avait envoyé 15 ou 16 idées. Je les ai toutes écoutées et elles étaient fantastiques. Mais il y avait cette mélodie que vous avez dans le refrain et l’intro de « Stay A Little While » et j’ai été immédiatement conquis. Dès que je l’ai entendue, j’ai commencé à la jouer au piano et cette partie a été enregistrée le soir même. C’est vraiment cool de travailler sur ces arrangements de power ballads très traditionnelles. Et vous avez la même chose dans le chant qui me rappelle les power ballads des années 80. Cela ressemble un peu à Guns N’Roses ou à une ballade de Whitesnake. C’est assez différent de nos autres ballades et c’était vraiment amusant de travailler dessus.

Victor : Quels sont les principaux thèmes que vous vouliez aborder dans cet album ?

Olof : Nous avons un thème général sur cet album où nous parlons du changement et plus encore du moment du changement, de l’élément déclencheur. Les choses étaient comme ça avant et il y a un événement qui les rend totalement différentes de ce qu’elles étaient. Et cela peut être en bien ou en mal, ou dans une macro perspective ou dans de petits détails. C’est un peu comme l’effet papillon. Lorsque la moitié de l’album a été écrite, Elize et moi-même avons regardé les paroles et nous savions que nous traitions d’un sujet très spécifique. Nous avons donc décidé de poursuivre dans cette voie, tout en gardant à l’esprit que nous pouvions aborder ce thème sous différents angles. Nous ne voulions pas faire un album conceptuel avec une histoire et tout ça, mais nous avons gardé ce thème en filigrane dans l’album. Et le cyborg que vous voyez sur la pochette est la manifestation de ce déclencheur de changement.

Victor : Vous allez bientôt partir en tournée avec DragonForce en Europe. Comment vous sentez-vous par rapport à cette tournée ? Et pendant ces concerts, vous serez en tête d’affiche à l’Olympia à Paris, comment vous sentez-vous en tant que groupe de jouer en tête d’affiche dans une salle aussi mythique ?

Olof : Tout d’abord, c’est vraiment génial de tourner avec DragonForce. Nous les connaissons depuis longtemps et ce sont de très bons amis. Avec mon ancien groupe, il y a vingt ans, nous correspondions avec eux, et quand nous avons commencé à tourner avec Amaranthe, nous avons joué au Garage à Londres et ils sont venus voir le concert et passer du temps avec nous. Cela fait plus de dix ans que nous parlons de tourner ensemble, car nous sommes amis. Et même si nous jouons différents types de métal, nous pensons tous les deux que cela fonctionnera très bien. Et pour Paris, ce sera incroyable de jouer en tête d’affiche dans une salle aussi emblématique. Nous y avons déjà joué plusieurs fois, mais ce sera la première fois que nous clôturerons le concert, donc ce sera vraiment spécial et magique pour nous.

Victor : Pour conclure, quels sont les artistes qui vous ont donné des frissons ces derniers mois ?

Olof : Bonne question ! Je vais prendre un exemple. Le jour de Noël, ma femme et moi sommes restés debout très tard à écouter de la musique. Nous avons mis une playlist de chansons des années 80 et 90 et puis il y a eu « Wicked Game » de Chris Isaak et c’est une chanson que je n’avais pas entendue depuis longtemps, même si elle passe souvent à la radio. C’est une chanson que je n’avais pas vraiment écoutée depuis 15 ou 20 ans et j’ai eu des frissons de folie parce que c’est une chanson fantastique.

The end of February 2024 saw the release of Amaranthe’s new album, The Catalyst. The seventh album from the Swedish band, it takes the mix of metal and pop and electronic sounds even further. To find out more about its creation, its themes and the band’s evolution, we put a few questions to Olof Mörck, guitarist, keyboardist and founder of the group.

Interview by Victor BRUNERIE

Victor : Amaranthe has been a band for fifteen years now (they were named Avalanche at the beginning, editors note), how do you feel about still being working on new music with this band after that many years? 

Olof : In one way it’s crazy to think that’s it’s already been fifteen years cause it’s a major part of your life. And at the same time it feels that time has passed really quickly. We wrote the first songs in 2008 and in 2011 we were already touring with our first album and releasing singles on the radio. It’s been a really wild ride! And you know the first time we got time to take a step back an digest everything that happened in the last ten years was during the Covid pandemic, which was a terrible time for everyone including us cause we could not tour on our new album. The small upside to us was that we good time to rething how do we go forward. We did achieved quite a few things since the begining and it’s an amazing feeling!

Victor : In 2022 you resumed touring with your album Manifest. How was it for you to go back on stage?

Olof : It was an enormously big thing, and one of the  highlights of our entire career. We played Sweden Rock Festival in the summer 2022 and we had those songs we never played before, it was in our home country and we had many friends in the audience, it really was a monumental feeling that now things are back for real. We did not know if it would stop again in the autunm but everyone had this gut feeling that this was the time of everything going back to normal. We did festivals all around the summer and then we had a tour with Beyond The Black booked for the autunm. So everything started rolling again and we were so happy about that!

Victor : At this time you just had the album Manifest released. What was the fan response to those new songs? 

Olof : It was trully phenomenal, because we believed a lot in the album! Manifest was created in 2020 right after we finished the tour with Sabaton in Europe. A lot of the songs were written in that time window and we did take a lot of inspiration from that tour playing all these big arenas. We took the energy and made music of it. It was a very energetic feeling and a very energised album because of it. The consequence of that is that it has been our most successful album to date. It’s the best streaming one, it has our highest streaming songs. And they became instant classics with fans responding really well to the songs during live shows. so it was only good things basicaly.

Victor : Your new album The Catalyst is the first one with Mikael Sehlin on harsh vocals. How was it to work with a new person in the band for this new release? Did it change something to the way you were working on music? 

Olof : It came to us pretty naturaly. We started talking to him about the band, and he agreed to join early last year right at the time we were starting to record the new album. I had only written a template for where the growls should go but I had not finish those parts to a full extent. As soon as I know we would be working with him, and because he grew up not far from where our previous growler was from and they knew each other so they have a very similar style, so a lot of the process reminded me of when I worked with Henrik on the past albums. It was really an interesting thing to also what is his specific personality. We added some things that we had never tried before and going forward we’re very likely to use more of his specialities. On « Damnation Flame » he dos a lot of high notes together with the growls so that was a completely new thing for us.

Victor : Amaranthe has, for me, kind of its own genre. Having worked on all the albums, how do you feel the music you created reflects what you want for the band? 

Olof : We decieded really initialy that we wanted really powerful music but that means a lot of different things. There are tons of powerful metal but there also are tons of powerful pop songs that even people who don’t listen to pop usually really like. So that’s what we decieded really early on. And, I think while writing the very first song we already did try to keep an open mind on what we were doing without taking about it. And when we heard Elize sing kind of ad-libs that you would normaly hear in a pop song with big riffs. We knew then that we had something really unique but also that works very well. These combinations melt together quite in an obvious way. We kept doing that our entire carreer. Back in 2016, we had this song called « That Song » where you have this Queen influence and maybe a bit of Rihanna in Elize‘s singing. We loved recording it, and we were like « let’s go with it, it works! ».

Victor : Many of the songs of the new album are really upbeat, except « Stay A Little While » which is way softer. How was it to work on this song after crafting that many powerful songs for this album? 

Olof : We love to deal with contrast in general, so to work on something really different to all the other songs was really exciting. Myself and Elize we were sending each other messages and she suggested that we could work on a ballad. I thought that was a great idea and asked her if she had any ideas. I went to a dinner and came back late in the evening , too late to start working on a new song, and Elize had sent me 15 or 16 ideas. So I listened to all them and they were fantastic. But there was this melody that you have in the chorus and the intro of « Stay A Little While » and I was imediatly won over. As soon as I head it I started playing it on the piano and that part on piano was recorded that night. Something really cool is working on these very traditional power ballads  arrangments. And you have the same thing in the vocals that kind of reminds you of strong power ballads of the 80’s. It feels a bit like Guns N’Roses, or a Whitesnake ballad. It’s quite different from our other ballads and it was real fun to work on.

Victor : What are the main themes you wanted to tackle on this album lyrically? 

Olof : We have an over arching theme on this album where we talk about change and even more the moment of change, the trigger. Like things were a way before and you have an event that makes them totally different from what they were. And it can be for good or bad, or on a macro perspective or small details. It’s kind of like the butterfly effect.  When half of the album was written, Elize and myself looked at the lyrics and we knew we were dealing with a very specific topic. So we decieded to stay on that course but keeping in mind that we could approach this theme by a lot of different angles. We did not want to have a concept album with a story and all that, but we kept that theme running through the album. And the cyborg you see on the cover art she is the manifestation of that trigger of change.

Victor : You’ll soon be touring with DragonForce in Europe. How do you feel about this tour? And also during these shows you’ll be headlining L’Olympia in Paris, how do you feel as a band to be playing a headline show in such a mythical venue? 

Olof : First of all it’s really amazing to tour with DragonForce. We’ve known them for a long time, and they’re really good friends. With an old band of mine twenty years ago we were corresponding with those guys, and when we started touring with Amaranthe we played The Garage in London and they just came to watch the show and hang out with us. We’ve been talking about touring together for more than ten years cause we’re friends. And even if we play different types of metal we both think that it will work really well. And for Paris, it will be amazing to headline such an iconic venue. We played there a couple of time before but it will be the first time where we’re gonna close the show, so it’s gonna be truly special and magical for us.

Victor : To wrap this up, what artists gave you shivers in the last months ? 

Olof : Good question! I’ll take one example. On Christmas day, my wife and I were up really late listening to music. We put a playlist of 80’s and 90’s song and then you had « Wicked Game » by Chris Isaak on and it’s a song I had not heard in a long time even if it’s played a lot on the radio. It’s a song I have not really listened to properly in 15 or 20 years and I had insane goodsbumps cause it’s such a fantastic song.
