Pour le lancement de la tournée européenne 2024, nous avons eu la chance d’être les heureux élus pour ce concert d’Absolva et Blaze Bayley (ancien chanteur d’Iron Maiden sur les albums The X Factor et Virtual XI). Initialement prévu le 20 avril 2023, le chanteur a souffert d’un infarctus qui l’a contraint à reporter sa tournée, rendant l’attente des fans encore plus grande, en plus d’être impatients de découvrir son nouvel album Circle of Stone pour la première fois en live ! L’occasion donc d’ajouter un concert sur notre calendrier pour le 29 février.

La soirée commence avec le heavy metal de Absolva, groupe qui a la particularité d’être le backing band de Blaze Bayley depuis maintenant quelques années. Le set commence sur le morceau éponyme du dernier album, “Fire in the Sky”. On se prend rapidement à headbanguer et à scander les paroles du titre survitaminé, qui présente une batterie qui tabasse à coup de double pédales, de gros solos de guitares, d’une basse qui n’a rien à envier à Steve Harris et d’une voix qui oscille entre mediums sur les couplets et poussées dans les aigus sur les refrains. Le groupe enchaîne fort avec “Anthems to the Dead” issu du second album, qui finit de convaincre le public avec une grosse intro de batterie qui se conclut sur des slides des guitares et un morceau qui alterne entre passage plus speed sur les couplets et ralentis sur le refrain.
Pour la plupart des personnes présentes ce soir, c’est une excellente découverte d’Absolva qui est proposée avec un passage en revue de tous les albums du groupe au cours duquel on aura le plaisir de s’échauffer sur “Never a Good Day to Die”, Side by Side” ou encore “Code Red”. Le concert prend fin sur “From Beyond the Light”, titre aux sonorités plus old school et avec un riff saccadé et avec quelques passages un peu plus “galopants” à la Iron Maiden, une façon de nous préparer pour la suite ! Les anglais quittent la scène sous les ovations… mais on les retrouvera quelques minutes plus tard !
Quelques minutes bienvenues pour prendre l’air après un premier concert bien chaud et on retrouve les musiciens d’Absolva sur scène, entamant “Alive” avant de stopper net le morceau pour marquer l’arrivée de Blaze Bayley sur scène, puis de le reprendre. La voix de l’ex chanteur d’Iron Maiden est au point, et force est de constater que celui qui a subi de lourd problème de santé il y a à peine un an est de retour en pleine forme, arpentant la scène et invitant régulièrement les fans à reprendre en choeurs les paroles des morceaux, à lever les poings en l’air et à headbanguer ! La première partie du concert est une succession de classiques de la carrière du chanteur avec “Ten Seconds”, “Warrior” et “Pull Yourself Up”, et abouti sur un enchaînement de “premières fois” pour les titres jouées du nouvel album fraîchement sorti, Circle of Stone.
L’avantage d’être la première date d’une tournée avec un album sorti quelques semaines avant, c’est en effet d’avoir le plaisir de découvrir des morceaux joués pour la première fois, et on ne boude quand le leader d’Absolva commence à jouer le thème principal de l’instrumentale “The Calls of the Ancestors” à la guitare avant de poursuivre avec le morceau éponyme de l’album “Circle of Stone”. Le morceau sonne de suite comme un futur classique de la discographie du musicien, le tout sonnant comme très épique et lyrique, avec un chant qui vient être secondé par les choeurs des guitaristes du groupe, que l’on reprend volontiers à l’unisson ! On a aussi l’occasion de découvrir “Rage”, “A Day of Reckoning” et “The Path of the Righteous Man” eux aussi joués pour la première fois, avant le prochain morceau qui commence sur une rythmique de basse que les fans reconnaissent instantanément… puisqu’il s’agit de l’intro de “Lightning Strikes Twice”, de l’album Virtual XI d’Iron Maiden !
La suite du concert aura carrément des allures de moment culte et hors du temps, avec la découverte, une nouvelle fois, d’un morceau du dernier album “Mind Reader”, où Blaze Bayley nous introduit au message du morceau, qui à travers l’image d’un boxeur qui perd contre son adversaire mais se relève à chaque fois, nous invite à poursuivre nos rêves, quels qu’ils soient, sans se soucier des personnes qui souhaiteraient que l’on échoue. On scande vite en chœurs le “Unbeatable, unbeatable” du refrain ! Après cette dernière découverte du show, ainsi qu’un “When Two Worlds Collide” (Iron Maiden) suivi de “Stare at the Sun” issu de la discographie solo du chanteur, les fans auront la chance de découvrir le culte “Man on the Edge” de l’album The X Factor, premier des deux albums d’Iron Maiden avec Blaze Bayley. L’occasion de reprendre les paroles, directement inspirées du film Chute Libre (Falling Down en VO), et ce “Falling down, falling down” du refrain qui crée la folie chez les fans du groupe ! Pour finir le concert, le groupe joue un dernier extrait de Virtual XI avec le titre “Futureal” à la basse galopante, accompagnée du son de guitare si particulier du morceau, où les fans scandent à l’unisson “Do you believe what you feel, can you believe what is real, futureal”.
L’occasion était belle pour les fans d’Iron Maiden de cocher la case “concert d’un ex chanteur du groupe” avec ce concert de Blaze Bayley, et le musicien a su ravir les fans ! Entre découverte des titres du nouvel album en live pour la première fois au monde (rien que ça !) et revue des classiques de sa carrière solo et de son passage dans le groupe de Steve Harris, la soirée était “the place to be” pour les amateurs de heavy metal ! Absolva a eu la lourde tâche de s’occuper de la première partie et d’enchaîner un deuxième concert aux côtés de Blaze Bayley et a accompli celle-ci avec brio, le concert dans son ensemble a permis au public de rentrer chez lui avec le sourire aux lèvres !

For the launch of the 2024 European tour, we were lucky enough to be the lucky ones for this concert by Absolva and Blaze Bayley (former Iron Maiden singer on The X Factor and Virtual XI albums). Originally scheduled for 20 April 2023, the singer suffered a heart attack which forced him to postpone his tour, making fans’ anticipation even greater, as well as their impatience to discover his new album Circle of Stone for the first time live! So we’ve added a concert to our calendar for this 29th of February.

The evening kicks off with the heavy metal of Absolva, a band who are Blaze Bayley‘s backing band for several years now. The set begins with the eponymous track from their latest album, ‘Fire in the Sky’. It doesn’t take long before you’re headbanging and chanting along to the lyrics of this supercharged track, which features double-pedal drums, big guitar solos, a bass playing that has nothing to envy to Steve Harris‘ and a voice that oscillates between mediums on the verses and highs on the choruses. The band followed this up with ‘Anthems to the Dead’ from their second album, which won over the crowd with a big drum intro that ended with guitar slides and a song that alternated between faster verses and slower choruses.
For most of those present this evening, it was an excellent discovery of Absolva, with a review of all the band’s albums, including warm-up tracks such as « Never a Good Day to Die », « Side by Side » and « Code Red ». The concert ended with « From Beyond the Light », a song with a more old-school sound, a jerky riff and a few passages that were a little more « galloping » in the style of Iron Maiden, a way of preparing us for what was to come! The English band leave the stage to a standing ovation… but we’ll see them again a few minutes later!
A few welcome minutes to get some fresh air after a hot first concert and we find the musicians of Absolva back on stage, starting « Alive » before stopping the song abruptly to mark the arrival of Blaze Bayley on stage, then picking it up again. The ex-Iron Maiden singer’s voice is on point, and it’s clear that the man who suffered a serious health problem barely a year ago is back in top form, striding around the stage and regularly inviting fans to sing along to the lyrics, raise their fists in the air and headbang! The first part of the concert was a succession of classics from the singer’s career, including « Ten Seconds », « Warrior » and « Pull Yourself Up », and ended with a series of « first times » for the tracks played from the new album, Circle of Stone.
The advantage of being the first date of a tour with an album released just a few weeks before is that you get to discover tracks played for the first time, and there’s no pouting when the leader of Absolva starts playing the main theme of the instrumental « The Calls of the Ancestors » on guitar before continuing with the eponymous track from the album, « Circle of Stone ». The track immediately sounds like a future classic in the musician’s discography, the whole thing sounding very epic and lyrical, with the vocals being backed up by the backing vocals of the band’s guitarists, which we gladly take up in unison! Rage », « A Day of Reckoning » and « The Path of the Righteous Man » are also played for the first time, before the next track begins with a bass rhythm that fans will instantly recognise… since it’s the intro to « Lightning Strikes Twice », from Iron Maiden‘s Virtual XI album!
The rest of the concert had the makings of a timeless cult moment, with the discovery, once again, of a track from the latest album, « Mind Reader », where Blaze Bayley introduces us to the message of the track, which, through the image of a boxer who loses to his opponent but gets back up each time, invites us to pursue our dreams, whatever they may be, without worrying about the people who would want us to fail. We’re soon singing along to the chorus of « Unbeatable, unbeatable »! After this last discovery of the show, as well as « When Two Worlds Collide » (Iron Maiden) followed by « Stare at the Sun » from the singer’s solo discography, fans had the chance to discover the cult song « Man on the Edge » from the album The X Factor, the first of Iron Maiden’s two albums with Blaze Bayley. It’s the perfect opportunity to take in the lyrics, directly inspired by the film Falling Down, and the « Falling down, falling down » chorus that has the band’s fans going wild! To finish the concert, the band played a final extract from Virtual XI with the track « Futureal », with its galloping bass, accompanied by the track’s distinctive guitar sound, where the fans chanted in unison « Do you believe what you feel, can you believe what is real, futureal ».
It was a great opportunity for Iron Maiden fans to tick the « ex-Maiden singer concert » box with this concert by Blaze Bayley, and the musician delighted the fans! Between discovering tracks from the new album live for the first time in the world (no less!) and reviewing classics from his solo career and his time in Steve Harris‘ band, the evening was « the place to be » for heavy metal fans! Absolva had the onerous task of opening the show and performing a second concert alongside Blaze Bayley, and they pulled it off brilliantly – the concert as a whole sent the audience home with a smile on their faces!
