Les maîtres du heavy metal sont de retour six ans après leur dernier album, et on vous le dit tout de suite : vous allez sûrement en entendre parler ! Avec dix huits albums sur un peu plus d’un demi-siècle de carrière, Judas Priest n’a pas terminé de nous faire vibrer à coup de gros riffs de guitare et de la voix si marquante de Rob Halford. Le nouvel album Invincible Shield, sorti le 8 mars chez Sony Music, est un véritable témoignage de la carrière d’un groupe qui a traversé les modes et défié le temps pour continuer à nous abreuver en heavy metal, mais aussi une démonstration de la capacité du groupe à se renouveler et à toujours aller chercher plus loin dans ce qu’il peut proposer.

Avec une intro aux synthés très 80s qui fait penser aux sonorités que le groupe a pu explorer par le passé sur “Turbo Lover”, le titre “Panic Attack” nous fait un tour de ce que le groupe sait faire de mieux. Riffs de guitare poignants, batterie qui tabasse sévère et un chant qui n’a rien perdu de sa puissance, c’est une entrée en matière réussie pour l’album avec un Judas Priest pur jus ! Pas de repos pour le moment, “The Serpent and the King” apporte une nouvelle dose de riffs incisifs et de solos qui donnent envie de headbanguer, en plus de retrouver des breaks et une rythmique ultra intéressante tout au long du morceau.
Le morceau éponyme “Invincible Shield” nous transporte de suite grâce à une ambiance épique et aux couleurs très power metal. On pense directement à “Painkiller” dans la façon de chanter et la présence d’une voix aiguë et l’autre plus grave sur les couplets, ce qui apporte une véritable ampleur au morceau. On ralenti le tempo pour partir sur des passages plus lourds de guitare et aux influence plus 90s avec “Devil in Disguise”, qui propose une nouvelle fois un mélange de rythmiques qu’on sent très travaillées et de solos de guitare à en faire pâlir plus d’un !
“Crown of Horns” vous interpellera à coup sûr avec son solo de guitare en intro. Le morceau apporte un moment de répit bienvenue après une première partie d’album sous le signe du gros heavy. Ici, on ralentit fortement le tempo et on découvre, à l’instar du groupe, un Rob Halford plus dans la retenue et en voix claire, l’occasion de découvrir un morceau qui nous marque par un sentiment de repos et de mélancolie. Proposant des riffs allant lorgner vers un côté progressif, “Escape Of Reality” est aussi le morceau de l’album qui atteste le mieux de la capacité de Rob Halford à proposer différentes textures au chant au cours d’un même morceau pour ne jamais lasser l’auditeur !
Sur l’édition deluxe de l’album, on découvre aussi avec plaisir trois titres supplémentaires à un album déjà très généreux en nombre de morceaux : “Fight of Your Life”, “Vicious Circle” et “The Lodger”. Trois titres ravageurs, notamment “The Lodger” qui va tirer vers des influences symphoniques, avec de nombreux changements de rythmiques, et des passages de guitare qu’on a pas forcément l’habitude d’entendre chez Judas Priest qui iront surprendre même les plus gros fans, dans le bon sens !
Le cru 2024 de Judas Priest restera dans les mémoires ! Non contents de proposer un album faisant le tour d’une carrière immensément riche en proposant du pur jus, le groupe se paie aussi le luxe d’aller scruter en dehors des sentiers battus et de continuer à surprendre après cinquante ans de carrière. Pas avares, les britanniques délivrent un album d’une durée de presque une heure dans sa version standard, étendue d’un peu plus de dix minutes dans sa version deluxe, le tout sans remplissage et sans morceaux vraiment passables tant chacun sonne comme un classique en puissance !

The masters of heavy metal are back six years after their last album, and we’re telling you right now: you’re bound to be hearing a lot more about them! With eighteen albums in a career spanning just over half a century, Judas Priest have not finished thrilling us with their big guitar riffs and Rob Halford’s distinctive voice. The new album, Invincible Shield, released on 8 March by Sony Music, is a true testament to the career of a band that has weathered fashions and defied the test of time to continue feeding us with heavy metal, but also a demonstration of the band’s ability to renew itself and always go further in what it can offer.
With an 80s synth intro reminiscent of the sounds the band have explored in the past on « Turbo Lover », the track « Panic Attack » takes us on a tour of the band’s best work. Poignant guitar riffs, hard-hitting drums and vocals that have lost none of their power, it’s a successful start to the album with Judas Priest pure and simple! No rest for the moment, ‘The Serpent and the King’ brings a new dose of incisive riffs and headbanging solos, plus breaks and an ultra-interesting rhythm throughout.
The eponymous track, ‘Invincible Shield’, immediately transports us with its epic, power metal atmosphere. The vocals are reminiscent of « Painkiller », with one high-pitched voice and the other lower on the verses, adding real scope to the track. The tempo slows down as we move on to heavier, more 90s-influenced guitar passages on « Devil in Disguise », which once again features a mix of well-crafted rhythms and guitar solos that would make anyone swoon!
« Crown of Horns » is sure to catch your attention, with its guitar solo intro. It’s a welcome respite from the heavy first half of the album. Here, the tempo is slowed down considerably and, like the rest of the band, we discover a more restrained Rob Halford in clear voice, giving us the chance to discover a track that leaves a lasting impression of rest and melancholy. Featuring riffs that veer towards the progressive, ‘Escape Of Reality’ is also the track on the album that best demonstrates Rob Halford‘s ability to offer different vocal textures on the same track, without ever tiring the listener!
On the deluxe edition of the album, we’re also delighted to discover three extra tracks on an album that’s already very generous in terms of number of tracks: ‘Fight of Your Life’, ‘Vicious Circle’ and ‘The Lodger’. Three devastating tracks, particularly ‘The Lodger’, which veers towards symphonic influences, with numerous rhythmic changes and guitar passages that we’re not necessarily used to hearing from Judas Priest, which will surprise even the biggest fans, in a good way!
Judas Priest‘s 2024 vintage will live long in the memory! Not content with offering an album covering an immensely rich career in pure juice, the band also have the luxury of looking off the beaten track and continuing to surprise after a career spanning fifty years. Not stingy, the British band deliver an album lasting almost an hour in its standard version, extended by just over ten minutes in its deluxe version, all without filler and without any really passable tracks, as each one sounds like a potential classic!
