S’il y a bien une date metalcore qu’il ne fallait pas manquer c’était celle de Polaris à l’Elysée Montmartre dimanche 10 mars. Pour cette tournée qui permet au groupe de faire découvrir plus de titres de leur dernier album Fatalism en live, ils sont accompagnés de Paledusk, Thornhill et Silent Planet (rien que ça)! Après cette affiche qui nous a bien fait saliver, ce dimanche à enfin mis fin à de longs mois d’attente.

Pour avoir le temps de faire passer tous ces groupes, c’est une soirée qui commence tôt. A 18h30, les japonais de Paledusk entrent en scène sur “Lose Yourself” d’Eminem. Dimanche n’est plus un jour de repos, la salle quelque peu éparse se chauffe tout doucement tandis que le groupe déborde déjà d’énergie. Daisuke et Tsubasa, les guitaristes font des sauts dans tous les sens, Kaito, le chanteur, occupe l’espace de la scène sans problème en y ajoutant lui aussi quelques sauts et Bob s’acharne derrière sa batterie. Paledusk a sorti un EP en février, nommé PALEHELL, cette tournée est l’occasion idéale pour le faire découvrir en live avec notamment le titres “RUMBLE”. Le groupe ne se tient pas à des nouveautés car on retrouve beaucoup plus d’anciennes chansons comme “9 SMILES” ou “WIND BACK”. Leur énergie et bonne humeur contaminante a très vite gagné la foule, c’est une très belle ouverture de soirée et on va définitivement avoir un œil à garder sur la scène japonaise !
Les changements sont courts et efficaces, il n’y a pas de temps à perdre avant d’enchaîner avec Thornhill. Le groupe venu d’Australie arrive sur scène dans la pénombre avant d’ouvrir avec “View From The Sun”. Leur set est le moment idéal pour découvrir en live notamment leur titre le plus récent “Obsession”, sortie fin février, le public reçoit très bien cette chanson et est enthousiaste ce qui est prometteur. On sent une réelle connexion entre les musiciens mais ils semblent plutôt dans leur bulle et, selon moi, l’ensemble manquait un peu d’énergie après le passage de Paledusk… Le public cependant répond présent sur des titres tel que “Raw” avec des énormes pogo. Quoiqu’il en soit, Thornhill a su convaincre le public en nous montrant leur capacité à passer de sons plutôt doux et clairs à du saturés en une même chanson. Le groupe ayant sorti un single fin octobre et un autre récemment, on pourrait s’attendre prochainement à l’annonce d’un album ou d’un EP !
L’enthousiasme du public grandit et les espaces vides ne sont plus si vides au fur et à mesure que l’on avance dans cette soirée qui est quasiment un sold out pour l’Elysée Montmartre. Il est temps pour l’avant-dernier groupe d’arriver sur scène, Silent Planet. Un projecteur s’allume, et nous voilà transportés sur une autre planète. Les membres du groupe arrivent sur scène en entamant le morceau “Offworlder”, chanson qui ouvre aussi leur dernier album SUPERBLOOM. Pendant toute la performance nous avons le droit à des images de fond qui nous plongent dans des atmosphères différentes avec des bâtiments en ruines, une forêt, ou alors des images plus abstraites. Pour “Antimatter”, par exemple, on se retrouve carrément dans les rues nocturnes d’une ville japonaise à la lumière des néons et une ambiance quelque peu futuriste. Garrett Russell profite de leur set pour communiquer avec le public, notamment avant de lancer “Panic Room”, le chanteur parle de sa dépression et du fait qu’il ne réfléchissait qu’à comment il pouvait s’ôter la vie en 2019. Il parle du fait qu’il est important d’en parler autour de soi et que sans les autres membres du groupe il n’aurait certainement pas pu s’en sortir. Cette introduction rend la performance de “Panic Room” d’autant plus puissante et prenante. Le set est fait pour les cirles pit effrénés et les wall of death qui séparent la salle en deux. Pour clôturer le set, Garrett s’en va slamer sur les bras de la foule tout en chantant “Trilogy”. Le retour en France de Silent Planet était très attendu puisqu’on ne les a pas vu depuis 2019, ce set nous permet d’avoir une belle reprise et on espère ne plus avoir à attendre aussi longtemps avant de les revoir en live !
La longue attente va prendre fin et le public est définitivement prêt pour ce qui arrive. A peine les lumières commencent à baisser que tout le monde crie « Polaris! Polaris! Polaris! » a gorge déployée. Jamie Hails arrive seul sur scène avant de commencer le titre “Harbinger”, qui débute aussi leur dernier album Fatalism, d’où le nom de cette tournée. La voix de Jamie lance la dernière partie de cette soirée d’un ton assuré et calme, avant d’être rejoint par les autre membres du groupe sur scène avant que tout explose. L’enchaînement se poursuit comme dans l’album avec “Nightmare”. Pour cette chanson, il est impossible de ne pas chanter avec, le public est présent à 100% et les personnes qui font du crowdsurfing arrivent déjà devant la scène ! Pas le temps de respirer, la foule est déchaînée, pendant tout le concert ils ne laissent pas au groupe l’occasion de respirer en demandant toujours plus et Polaris répond présent. On retrouve quelques moments pour respirer avec lorsque le groupe entame “With Regards”. Le tout forme un enchaînement de pogo, circles pits et wall of death assez impressionnant. C’est notamment le cas avec “Landmine” qui déclenche un circle pit occupant une très grande partie de la salle et quand celui-ci se referme c’est un énorme pogo qui continue ! Le groupe continue avec “Overflow” qui ne calme en rien le public. A la fin du morceau Jamie profite d’un instant pour prendre la parole afin de remercier le public mais très vite il cède sa place à Daniel Furnari, le batteur, qui s’exprime en français. Il raconte le stress de la journée, en effet leur bus est tombé en panne avant d’arriver à Paris et ils ont, heureusement pour nous, pu trouver un moyen d’arriver in extremis en début de soirée ! Cependant, Daniel prend surtout la parole pour rendre hommage à Ryan Siew, leur guitariste décédé l’année dernière. On sent l’émotion dans sa voix, sa difficulté à en parler lorsqu’il dit que tout ce qu’ils font encore actuellement c’est aussi pour lui et tous les proches qui ne sont plus là, avant de lui dédier la chanson suivante: “Martyr (Waves)”. Difficile de ne pas lâcher une larme pendant ce morceau pour de nombreuses personnes dans la salle dont les membres du groupe sur scène, et pendant le morceau les flash de téléphone s’allument en l’honneur de Ryan. On retourne ensuite dans les pogos et les circle-pits notamment lorsque Jamie s’écriant « Let out your inner fucking animal! » pour annoncer le morceau “Dissipate”. On enchaîne ensuite avec “Masochist”, le micro est tendu à la foule qui chante à tue-tête les paroles encore plus fort. Polaris quitte la scène avec “Inhumane”, le public ne leur laisse même pas le temps de partir complètement avant de lancer le rappel. Celui-ci nous laisse l’occasion d’entendre encore deux morceaux, “Pray For Rain” et “The Remedy” qui nous laisseront profiter des derniers pogo et crowdsurfing. Avant l’annonce de “The Remedy”, Jamie laisse entendre que ce sera la dernière, le public ne se laisse pas abattre mais surtout ils font comprendre leur déception et qu’ils aimeraient bien que la soirée ne se termine pas déjà… Polaris quitte la scène de l’Elysée Montmartre sous les applaudissements et sourires ravis de la salle qui se remet tout doucement de ce qu’il vient de se passer.
L’affiche de ce dimanche 10 mars nous a proposer un moment hors du temps où nous avons pu voyager au Japon avec Paledusk, une étoile montante qui saura vous épater notamment par les sauts en toupies des guitaristes en concert, aux Etats-Unis avec Silent Planet qui nous ont plongé dans plein d’univers différents en projetant des ambiances différentes sur le fonds de scène et enfin en Australie avec Thornhill qui ont conquis la foule avec des moments d’émotions et Polaris, qui a retourné l’Elysée Montmartre par des pogos et circle pits sans fin. Une affiche suite à l’attente qui a su répondre à la demande du public avec cette date presque sold out!

If there’s one metalcore date you don’t want to miss, it’s Polaris at the Elysée Montmartre on Sunday 10 March. On this tour, which sees the band showcase more tracks from their latest album Fatalism live, they are joined by Paledusk, Thornhill and Silent Planet (no less)! After a line-up that had us all salivating, this Sunday finally put an end to long months of waiting.

To make sure there was enough time to get all these bands through, the evening got off to an early start. At 6.30pm, the Japanese band Paledusk took to the stage to play Eminem’s « Lose Yourself ». Sunday is no longer a day of rest, and the somewhat sparse crowd slowly warms up to the band, who are already bursting with energy. Daisuke and Tsubasa, the guitarists, are jumping up and down, Kaito, the singer, has no trouble taking over the stage, adding a few leaps of his own, and Bob is hard at work behind his drums. Paledusk released an EP called PALEHELL in February, and this tour is the perfect opportunity to show it off live, with the track ‘RUMBLE’ in particular. The band don’t stick to new material, though, as there are plenty of old favourites such as ‘9 SMILES’ and ‘WIND BACK’. Their energy and infectious good humour quickly won over the crowd, making for a great opening to the evening, and we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the Japanese scene!
The changes are short and effective, and there’s no time to lose before Thornhill take over. The Australian band take to the stage in the half-light before opening with ‘View From The Sun’. Their set is the perfect moment to discover live their most recent track, ‘Obsession’, released at the end of February, and the audience is very receptive to this song and enthusiastic, which is promising. You can feel a real connection between the musicians, but they seem to be more in their own bubble and, in my opinion, the whole set lacked a bit of energy after Paledusk‘s performance… However, the crowd really responded to tracks like « Raw » with some huge pogos. Be that as it may, Thornhill managed to win over the crowd by showing us their ability to go from soft, clear sounds to saturated ones in the same song. With the band having released a single at the end of October and another recently, we can expect the announcement of an album or EP in the near future!
The crowd’s enthusiasm grows and the empty spaces don’t seem so empty as the evening progresses, and the Elysée Montmartre is practically sold out. It’s time for the penultimate band to take to the stage, Silent Planet. A spotlight turns on, and we’re transported to another planet. The band take to the stage with ‘Offworlder’, the opening track from their latest album SUPERBLOOM. Throughout the performance we’re treated to background images that plunge us into different atmospheres, with buildings in ruins, a forest, or more abstract images. In ‘Antimatter’, for example, we find ourselves in the night-time streets of a Japanese city, with neon lights and a somewhat futuristic atmosphere. Garrett Russell takes advantage of their set to communicate with the audience, notably before launching into « Panic Room », the singer talks about his depression and the fact that he was only thinking about how he could take his own life in 2019. He talks about how important it is to talk about it with others, and how without the other members of the band he certainly wouldn’t have been able to cope. This introduction makes the performance of ‘Panic Room’ all the more powerful and gripping. The set was all about frantic circles pits and wall of deaths that split the room in two. To close the set, Garrett slammed into the arms of the crowd while singing « Trilogy ». Silent Planet‘s return to France has been eagerly awaited, as we haven’t seen them since 2019. This set was a great reprise, and we hope we won’t have to wait so long to see them live again!
The long wait is about to end and the audience is definitely ready for what’s coming. No sooner have the lights started to dim than everyone is shouting « Polaris! Polaris! Polaris! » at the top of their voices. Jamie Hails arrives alone on stage before starting the song ‘Harbinger’, which also kicks off their latest album Fatalism, hence the name of this tour. Jamie‘s voice kicks off the last part of the evening in a confident, calm tone, before being joined by the other band members on stage before everything explodes. The sequence continues as on the album with ‘Nightmare’. For this song, it’s impossible not to sing along, the audience is 100% present and the crowdsurfers are already arriving at the front of the stage! There’s no time to breathe, the crowd is unleashed, and throughout the concert they don’t give the band a chance to breathe, asking for more and more, and Polaris responds. There were a few moments to breathe when the band began « With Regards ». The whole thing forms an impressive sequence of pogos, circles pits and wall of death. This is particularly the case with « Landmine », which triggers a circle pit occupying a very large part of the room, and when it closes again there’s a huge pogo going on! The band continued with « Overflow », which did nothing to calm the crowd. At the end of the song Jamie takes a moment to thank the audience, but he soon gives way to Daniel Furnari, the drummer, who speaks in French. He recounts the stress of the day, as their bus broke down before arriving in Paris and, fortunately for us, they were able to find a way to get there in extremis early in the evening! However, Daniel takes the floor above all to pay tribute to Ryan Siew, their guitarist who died last year. You can feel the emotion in his voice, and his difficulty in talking about it, as he says that everything they’re still doing now is also for him and all the loved ones who are no longer here, before dedicating the next song to him: « Martyr (Waves) ». It’s hard not to shed a tear during this song for many people in the room, including the band members on stage, and during the song the phone flashes light up in Ryan‘s honour. Then it was back to the pogos and circle-pits, with Jamie shouting « Let out your inner fucking animal! » to announce the song « Dissipate ». Then it’s on to « Masochist », with the microphone handed to the crowd, who sing the lyrics even louder at the top of their lungs. Polaris leave the stage with « Inhumane », and the crowd don’t even give them time to leave completely before the encore. The encore gives us the chance to hear two more tracks, « Pray For Rain » and « The Remedy », which let us enjoy the last of the pogoing and crowdsurfing. Before « The Remedy » was announced, Jamie hinted that this would be the band’s last song, but the crowd remained undaunted and made it clear that they were disappointed and wished the evening hadn’t ended so soon… Polaris left the Elysée Montmartre stage to rapturous applause and smiles from the crowd, who were slowly recovering from what had just happened.
The line-up for this Sunday March 10th offered us a timeless experience, taking us on a journey to Japan with Paledusk, a rising star whose guitarists will blow you away with their spinning top jumps, to the USA with Silent Planet, who plunged us into many different worlds by projecting different atmospheres onto the backdrop, and finally to Australia with Thornhill, who won over the crowd with their emotional moments, and Polaris, who turned the Elysée Montmartre upside down with endless pogos and circle pits. A line-up that lived up to expectations with a show that almost sold out!
