En ce soir du mardi 12 mars, c’est au Splendid de Lille qu’on s’apprête à passer une soirée blues rock de haute volée ! En effet, c’est avec un poids lourd du genre, Popa Chubby, que l’on va profiter des riffs de guitare rugueux et des mesures en 4-4 . Et quoi de mieux que d’inaugurer la partie français de sa tournée qu’un Splendid sold-out ? Cette belle soirée était organisée par Vérone Productions.

L’attente ne sera pas longue puisque malgré une file très dense à mon arrivée sur place, l’entrée sur scène se fera à peine dix minutes plus tard, vers 20h15, avec Popa Chubby et ses trois musiciens (batterie, basse, synthés). Avant de jouer la moindre note, l’homme à la renommée internationale est accueilli sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements de la part du public, et c’est tout sourire que le guitariste et son groupe entame leur cover du classique “Hey Joe” (repris aussi entre autre par Jimi Hendrix). L’ambiance est électrique et l’américain nous fait une véritable démonstration de sa voix chaleureuse et bluesy à souhait, et surtout de ses capacités incroyables à la guitare en enchaînant riffs gras et longues explorations pentatoniques à travers différents solos endiablés !
Au fur et à mesure du set, on a un passage en revue des différentes couleurs et styles du groupe : tantôt funk, tantôt jazz, le tout saupoudré de blues rock détonnant, Popa Chubby frappe par sa simplicité et semble véritablement touché dès que le public applaudi. Il se retourne régulièrement vers ses musiciens pour les chambrer et aussi leur donner quelques directives, le guitariste improvisant régulièrement divers passages à la six cordes au cours de ses morceaux. En ajoutant à cela la scène très épurée du Splendid, uniquement vêtue de quelques amplis, on obtient une soirée très intimiste par égards, malgré une salle sold out ! Entre les morceaux du guitariste, on peut découvrir un titre qui parlera aux amateurs du film The Godfather, puisque le bluesman interprétera une version incluant différents passages du thème principal du film “The Godfather Waltz” de Nino Rota (que l’on a aussi pu entendre repris par Slash).
Popa Chubby étant généreux et cherchant à délivrer un show pour le plaisir de ses fans, il n’hésite pas à mettre très souvent en avant ses musiciens, que ça soit en faisant un duel guitare / synthés, en incluant un solo de basse enivrant de plusieurs minutes, et surtout en rejoignant le kit de batterie installé à ses côtés depuis le début du show pour entamer un battle avec son batteur ! Après pas loin de deux heures de show, le groupe annonce un titre qui s’avère être un cover de “Hallelujah” de Leonard Cohen. On reprend en choeurs le fameux “Hallelujah, hallelujah” avec Popa Chubby, une vraie séquence émotion qui marque la fin d’un excellent concert.
Ce concert de Popa Chubby a su ravir une salle entière d’amateurs de blues rock, un public acquis à la cause du bluesman de la première à la dernière note, ce qui résulte en un concert mémorable ! Bien qu’amenuisé par sa santé et contraint d’être assis pendant la totalité de son show, Popa Chubby joue chaque notes et chante chaque parole avec une intensité digne des plus grands, avec un show là pour ravir avant tout son public, objectif réussi !

On the evening of Tuesday 12 March, it’s off to the Splendid in Lille for an evening of blues rock of the highest order! Popa Chubby, one of the legends of the genre, will be on hand to provide the rough guitar riffs and 4-4 bars. And what better way to kick off the French leg of his tour than with a sold-out Splendid? The evening was organised by Vérone Productions.

I didn’t have long to wait, because despite a very long queue when I got there, Popa Chubby and his three musicians (drums, bass, synths) took to the stage just ten minutes later, at around 8.15pm. Before playing a single note, the internationally-renowned man was greeted by thunderous applause from the audience, and it was with a smile that the guitarist and his band began their cover of the classic « Hey Joe » (also covered by Jimi Hendrix, among others). The atmosphere was electric, and the American gave us a real demonstration of his warm, bluesy voice, and above all his incredible guitar skills, stringing together fat riffs and long pentatonic explorations through a series of frenzied solos!
As the set progresses, the band’s different colours and styles are reviewed: sometimes funk, sometimes jazz, all sprinkled with some explosive blues rock, Popa Chubby is striking in his simplicity and seems genuinely moved when the audience applauds. He regularly turns to his musicians to challenge them and also to give them a few instructions, the guitarist regularly improvising various passages on the six-string during his songs. Add to this the very uncluttered stage at Le Splendid, with just a few amplifiers, and you have a very intimate evening by any standards, despite a sold-out venue! In between the guitarist’s songs, there’s a track that will appeal to fans of the film The Godfather, as the bluesman performs a version that includes various passages of the main theme from Nino Rota‘s The Godfather Waltz (which has also been covered by Slash).
Popa Chubby is a generous man who aims to put on a show for the enjoyment of his fans, so he doesn’t hesitate to showcase his musicians, whether it’s a guitar/synth duel, an exhilarating bass solo lasting several minutes, or joining the drum kit set up beside him at the start of the show to engage in a battle with his drummer! After almost two hours on stage, the band announced a song that turned out to be a cover of Leonard Cohen‘s « Hallelujah ». Popa Chubby and all of the crowd sang along to the famous « Hallelujah, hallelujah », a real emotional moment that marked the end of an excellent concert.
This Popa Chubby concert delighted an entire room of blues rock fans, an audience that was won over to the bluesman’s cause from the first note to the last, resulting in a memorable concert! Although his health was failing him and he was forced to sit for the whole of his show, Popa Chubby played every note and sang every word with an intensity worthy of the greats, with a show designed to delight his audience above all else – and he succeeded!
