Le 15 Mars 2024 était une date dont tous les fans des 90’s attendaient avec une grande impatience lors d’un concert de garage rock / hard rock qui allait faire trembler dans les chaumières et même sous terre ! Car pour la peine, deux groupes du genre étaient présents, et pas des moindres. Le mammouth du hard rock des 90’s, dopé à la fureur de tout écraser sur son passage et toujours debout depuis 1989, j’ai nommé les hard rockers d’Ugly Kid Joe, tout droit venu de Californie pour faire saigner nos douces oreilles comme il se doit, accompagnés du garage rock teinté d’indie rock du duo électrique et énergique de Manchester, The Virginmarys. Pas étonnant que The Black Lab avait fait Sold Out depuis mi janvier avec cette soirée d’anthologie, tout un programme, que forcément les fans du genre ne pouvaient manquer sous aucun prétexte !

A peine le début du concert et The Black Lab est déjà rempli et plein à craquer, quant à la fosse n’en parlons pas, chacun voulait sa part du gâteau avec sa place au chaud, serré les uns contre les autres pour vibrer au son d’un max d’overdrive de distorsion et de solos déjantés ! Quel pied de pouvoir goûter à cette ambiance qui prédestinait déjà une soirée mémorable, ainsi que d’avoir eu la chance pour les petits veinards d’avoir réussi à se dégoter une place pour faire partie de ce spectacle de toute beauté que, forcément, on ne pouvait pas louper.
On démarre la soirée avec le duo de The Virginmarys prêt à nous offrir un garage rock sur vitaminé et fort en émotions joué au millimètre prêt entre mélodies et riffs acérés. L’énergie est là et le duo composé d’une guitare dopée à l’octaver accompagnée d’une batterie puissante et groovy nous en met déjà plein la tête, et ce dès les toutes premières notes. The Virginmarys nous offre des rythmiques pêchues qui entraînent les têtes du public à bouger sur un son énergique et efficace, accentué d’un caractère vigoureux et bardé de tonus dont on aime tant. Et c’est exactement ce que cette foule de fans du genre était venue chercher ce soir. Pas la peine de réfléchir trop et de faire fumer nos cerveaux, on savait tous très bien pourquoi on était là, s’en prendre un maximum dans la tête et chanter à tue-tête !
Et The Virginmarys étaient justement là pour ça, nous entraîner dans leur son puissant et teinté d’un punch blindé de poigne vous aidant à courir un 100 mètres en un minimum de temps, ou encore d’abattre le plus costaud et solide des arbres à mains nues en lui arrachant jusqu’à la toute dernière racine tel un castor survitaminé et dopé à la vitalité ! Le public accroche et adhère à cette force de jeu et cette efficacité toutes en émotions, car c’est un magnifique levé de rideau que nous offre The Virginmarys.
On en avait grand besoin pour commencer ce weekend de folie et notamment cette soirée à l’ancienne qui sentait bon les 90’s que nous avait préparé The Black Lab aux petits oignons frits, farcis et passés à la moulinette ou coupés en morceaux comme allaient l’être nos cerveaux avant l’heure du dodo. Au final, impossible de rester de marbre devant un tel déchaînement de son et de dynamisme joué par ce duo haut en couleurs qu’est The Virginmarys, et en attendant les Ugly, comme on le disait dans nos vieilles cours de récré, « même pas peur » !
Ugly Kid Joe live in Wasquehal ? Si on nous l’avait dit quelques années auparavant on n’y aurait peut-être jamais cru. Et pourtant ! The Black Lab à encore frappé fort avec cette date de folie qui allait forcément attirer les fans de la première heure du bon vieux hard rock groovy d’Ugly Kid Joe.
Quel plaisir de pouvoir accueillir nos hard rockers préférés des 90’s dans nos bonnes vieilles contrées des Hauts-de-France, avec seulement deux dates en France pour leur tournée de 2024, forcément que cette date mythique et mémorable allait très vite être sold out ! Mais ça y est, on y est, prêt à en prendre plein les oreilles et plein les yeux comme à l’époque avec Ugly Kid Joe, comme ci on était encore et toujours dans nos bonnes vieilles années 90, à revivre la gloire de ces années qui ont donné un nom au hard rock, avec des riffs pêchus qui vous donne du baume au coeur, des grattes gavées aux overdrive qui larsenent dans vos oreilles à vous décoller les tympans, sans oublier cette bonne dose de fun qu’on aimait tant !
Back to the past comme on dit, comme l’impression de faire un voyage dans le temps en l’espace d’une soirée, et quel voyage, le public déchaîné se mets à vibrer lorsque les Ugly nous offre des titres tel que “Neighbor”, “Cat’s in the Cradle”, “Everything About You” ou encore leur excellent cover de “Ace of Spades” de Motörhead. Tout y est pour se laisser entraîner avec intensité dans un déchaînement de folie, ce qui a justement été le carburant de cette soirée, et ça n’a pas tardé à se faire ressentir par les fans des Ugly Kid Joe ! Le public était totalement survolté avec une foule en délire qui gesticulait comme des puces extasiées sur un tapis de course à pleine vitesse, quand au slams, ils ne s’arrêtaient pas et l’on finissait toujours par voir une paire de baskets à la place de ce qui aurait dû normalement être une tête!
C’était à n’y rien comprendre, ça n’avait ni queue ni tête, et c’était justement ça qui faisait toute la magie de cette soirée riche en émotions jusqu’à la toute dernière note de guitare saturée prêt à en découdre avec le dernier des moines bouddhistes le plus déterminé du fond de la salle, à continuer incognito son numéro de statue de cire du musée Grévin. Du grand Art de la part des Ugly Kid Joe ainsi que de leur public, qui eux avaient tout compris. Ce fût donc un Ugly Kid Joe dans toute leur splendeur, tel qu’on pouvait les connaître dans leurs shows mythiques et mémorables des 90’s. A nouveau nos hard rockers d’enfer ont tout donné jusqu’à noyer The Black Lab dans un océan de feu, et faire exploser nos tout derniers neurones qui n’avaient pas encore grillés. Alors forcément, il fallait en faire partie et surtout ne pas manquer une soirée de folie comme celle-ci, car clairement c’est un truc dont on s’en serait voulu à vie. Et pour ça, on dit merci les Ugly Kid Joe !

The 15th of March 2024 was a date that all fans of the 90s were looking forward to with great anticipation: a garage rock / hard rock concert that was going to rock the house and even the ground! For good measure, two bands from the genre were present, and not the least. The mammoth of 90’s hard rock, doped up with the fury to crush everything in its path and still standing since 1989, I’m talking about the hard rockers of Ugly Kid Joe, straight from California to make our sweet ears bleed as they should, accompanied by the garage rock tinged with indie rock of the electric and energetic duo from Manchester, The Virginmarys. No wonder The Black Lab had been Sold Out since mid-January, with this anthology of an evening that fans of the genre couldn’t possibly miss!

Barely had the concert begun and The Black Lab was already packed to the rafters, not to mention the pit, where everyone wanted a piece of the action with a warm seat, huddled together to vibrate to the sound of maximum overdrive, distortion and crazy solos! It was a real treat to get a taste of the atmosphere, which was already shaping up to be a memorable evening, and to be lucky enough to have managed to snag a ticket to be part of this magnificent show, which was obviously not to be missed.
We kicked off the evening with The Virginmarys, a duo ready to offer us some high-energy, emotionally-charged garage rock played to the millimetre with melodies and sharp riffs. The energy is there and the duo, made up of an octave-high guitar accompanied by powerful, groovy drums, are already blowing our minds from the very first notes. The Virginmarys‘ punchy rhythms keep the audience’s heads bobbing to an energetic, effective sound, accentuated by the vigorous, high-energy character we love so much. And that’s exactly what this crowd of genre fans had come for tonight. There was no need to think too hard or get our brains smoking, we all knew exactly why we were there: to get as much as we could into our heads and sing our hearts out!
And that’s exactly what The Virginmarys were there for, to draw us into their powerful sound, tinged with a punch that’s full of grip, helping you to run 100 metres in the shortest possible time, or to chop down the strongest, most solid tree with your bare hands, pulling out every last root like a beaver boosted with vitality! The audience catches on and buys into the strength of their performance and their emotional efficiency, as The Virginmarys offer us a magnificent curtain-raiser.
It was just what we needed to kick off this weekend of madness, and in particular this old-fashioned evening that smacked of the 90s, prepared for us by The Black Lab with fried onions, stuffed and passed through the mill or cut into pieces as our brains would be before bedtime. All in all, it’s impossible to remain indifferent to such an outburst of sound and dynamism from the colourful duo that is The Virginmarys, and while we wait for Ugly, as we used to say in our old school playgrounds, « don’t even be afraid »!
Ugly Kid Joe live in Wasquehal? If someone had told us a few years ago, we might never have believed them. And yet! The Black Lab struck again with this crazy date that was bound to attract fans of Ugly Kid Joe‘s good old groovy hard rock.
What a pleasure to be able to welcome our favourite 90s hard rockers to our good old region of Hauts-de-France! With only two dates in France for their 2024 tour, this mythical and memorable date was bound to sell out fast! But here we are, ready to get our ears and eyes full of Ugly Kid Joe, as if we were still in the good old 90s, reliving the glory of those years that gave a name to hard rock, with peachy riffs that make your heart sing, overdrive-fuelled guitars that wail in your ears, without forgetting that good dose of fun we loved so much!
Back to the past, as they say, like taking a trip back in time in the space of an evening, and what a trip it was, as the wild crowd started to vibrate when the Ugly treated us to tracks such as « Neighbor », « Cat’s in the Cradle », « Everything About You » or their excellent cover of Motörhead‘s « Ace of Spades ». It’s all there for you to let yourself be swept away in a frenzy of madness, which was precisely the fuel for this evening, and it didn’t take long for the Ugly Kid Joe fans to feel it! The crowd went absolutely wild, gesticulating like ecstatic fleas on a treadmill at full speed, and the slams were non-stop, always ending up with a pair of trainers in place of what should normally have been a head!
The whole thing was beyond comprehension, it had neither head nor tail, and that’s precisely what made the magic of this emotionally-charged evening, right down to the very last note of saturated guitar, ready to do battle with the last of the most determined Buddhist monks at the back of the room, incognito, continuing his wax statue act from the Musée Grévin. Great art from Ugly Kid Joe and their audience, who understood everything. It was Ugly Kid Joe in all their splendour, as we knew them from their legendary and memorable shows of the 90s. Once again, our hard rockers gave it their all, drowning The Black Lab in a sea of fire and blowing the last of our brain cells to smithereens. So, obviously, you had to be there, and you didn’t want to miss an evening of madness like this, because clearly it’s something you’d be angry about for the rest of your life. And for that, we say thank you to Ugly Kid Joe!
