L’an dernier nous vous parlions de Spit Takes, le premier EP des allemands de Velcros. En cette fin d’hiver, le groupe arrive pour nous proposer son premier album studio. Intitulé Strange News From The Vault, il sera disponible le 22 mars prochain via Crazysane Records. C’est parti pour 11 nouveaux morceaux du trio qui nous avait totalement conquis avec sa première sortie.

Le son de guitare de « Starting Now » nous replonge dans ce rock typique de l’Angleterre que le trio maîtrise à merveille. On sent encore une fois un véritable travail sur les compositions sur « Troubled Mind » et ses sonorités dignes des Buzzcocks. Fabian Bremer, Nicolai Hildebrandt et Manuel Markstein arrivent avec des morceaux souvent rapides et allant droit au but à nous donner envie de remuer dans notre salon en se dandinant comme dans les années 60. La marque de fabrique du trio est bien là et on est ravis de replonger avec eux dans un rock à la fois simple mais aussi travaillé pour ne pas être une simple référence à une époque révolue. Les claviers se mêlent aux guitares avec brio et la batterie est un véritable métronome pour nos pas de danse.
« Devotion » nous remet un petit coup de fouet avec sa guitare boosté à la disto et son chant toujours aussi efficace. Le groupe ne faiblit pas et continue de proposer titre après titre une musique qu’on a envie de se repasser en boucle en sachant renouveler les gimmicks à chaque composition. Impossible de passer à côté des petites pépites que sont « Fading Too » et ses guitares shoegaze ou « Floater », même si elles annoncent déjà la fin proche de ce premier album des allemands. Mais le trio nous réserve deux dernières petites douceurs musicales sous la forme de « On Your Own et « The Invisible Hand ».
Avec Strange News From The Vault, notre coup de cœur pour Velcros est totalement confirmé. Les trois allemands nous livrent un album qui s’écoute à l’envie et rempli de tubes tous plus entêtants les uns que les autres. La nostalgie est évidemment présente mais ne nous noie jamais, ce qui fait de ces onze compositions de véritables petites merveilles rock encrées dans un son à la fois moderne à souhait mais emprunt d’influences très marquées dans l’Angleterre des années 60 et 70.

Last year we told you about Spit Takes, the debut EP from Germany’s Velcros. Now, as winter draws to a close, the band are back with their first studio album. Entitled Strange News From The Vault, it will be available on 22 March via Crazysane Records. Here we go with 11 new tracks from the trio who totally won us over with their first release.
The guitar sound of « Starting Now » takes us back to the typical English rock that the trio have mastered to perfection. Troubled Mind », with its Buzzcocks-esque sound, is another example of the trio’s hard work on their compositions. Fabian Bremer, Nicolai Hildebrandt and Manuel Markstein come up with tracks that are often fast-paced and straight to the point, making you want to wiggle around your living room like you’re back in the 60s. The trio’s trademark is there for all to see, and we’re delighted to be immersed with them in a rock that’s both simple and well-crafted, so as not to be a mere reference to a bygone era. The keyboards blend brilliantly with the guitars, and the drums are a veritable metronome for our dance steps.
« Devotion » kicks things up a notch with its distortion-boosted guitar and vocals as effective as ever. The band never falters, continuing to deliver track after track of music you’ll want to play over and over again, renewing the gimmicks with each composition. It’s impossible to miss the little nuggets like « Fading Too » and its shoegaze guitars, or « Floater », even if they already herald the imminent end of this first album from the Germans. But the trio have two final musical treats in store in the form of ‘On Your Own’ and ‘The Invisible Hand’.
Strange News From The Vault confirms our love affair with Velcros. The three Germans deliver an album that can be listened to over and over again, full of hits, each more heady than the last. Nostalgia is obviously present, but it never drowns us, making these eleven compositions veritable little rock gems set in a sound that’s as modern as you could wish for, but with strong influences from 60s and 70’s England.
