Trois ans ont passé depuis Sleeps Society, douze depuis leur premier album This Is The Six, While She Sleeps a connu une longue et régulière ascension dans la scène metalcore. Heureusement pour nous, ils ne sont pas prêts à s’arrêter puisque Self Hell, leur sixième album, sortira le 29 mars. Self Hell sortira sur leur propre label Sleeps Brothers comme les précédents albums.

Le groupe britannique nous a déjà offert un aperçu de son album grâce à trois singles, qui ne diffèrent cependant pas beaucoup de ce que l’on a l’habitude d’entendre de la part de While She Sleeps. Le premier titre, « Peace of Mind », sert de courte introduction à l’album et annonce également que Self Hell nous permettra de découvrir de nouvelles facettes du groupe. Des guitares saturées, une batterie pesante et un chœur accompagnant la voix de Loz, voilà comment nous entrons dans ce nouvel album. Les paroles « Are you afraid of them ? » peuvent laisser penser que le groupe est prêt à affronter la réaction de la critique, quelle qu’elle soit. « Leave Me Alone » est heavy, commençant par des sons de tempête, puis des riffs de guitares avant qu’une voix électronique n’annonce « We Are While She Sleeps ». Le refrain est entraînant avec une répétition de la phrase « Leave me the fuck alone » que l’on entend clairement. La chanson se termine sur des sons plus électroniques, on pourrait facilement imaginer que cette chanson soit choisie pour ouvrir leur prochaine série de concerts ! « We are chasing rainbows into blackholes » c’est ce qu’annonce le groupe dans le refrain de « Rainbows ». La chanson laisse tout de même entrer plus d’éléments de style électro que ce à quoi While She Sleeps nous a habitués, mais les cris, les riffs et les solos de guitare n’en sont pas pour autant bannis.

Il est temps d’arriver à  » Self Hell « , le titre éponyme qui a annoncé l’album en septembre 2023 et qui est sorti avec son clip plein de couleurs néon et où tout le monde semble s’amuser. Si vous avez pu voir While She Sleeps fin septembre à Bruxelles, vous avez déjà entendu le single en live, mais vous savez aussi que le groupe et le public étaient dans une énergie folle, avec des parties faciles qui permettaient à tout le monde de chanter. « Wildfire » me rappelle l’album Brainwashed dans la manière dont les paroles sont prononcées. Le groupe semble parler d’un regain d’énergie et de confiance. La chanson s’estompe pour laisser place à « No Feeling Is Final ». Ce titre, qui met en scène Aether, est totalement instrumental et a une atmosphère de chanson post rock. « Dopesick » est un autre featuring, cette fois avec Fin Power, chanteur et guitariste de STONE. Le début est très doux, avec seulement une guitare, avant qu’une guitare électrique plus forte ne le rejoigne. Les sons de fond sont plus légers et la mélodie entière restera dans un coin de notre tête pour la journée. Comme les choses vont toujours par trois, l’album se poursuit avec « Down » qui a été réalisé avec le chanteur de Malevolence, Alex Taylor. La chanson est déjà sortie en décembre, elle est faite pour le live car on peut facilement imaginer l’énergie folle qui va conquérir le public lorsqu’ils la joueront.

« To The Flowers » est un single spécial pour le groupe car il s’agit de leur première chanson d’amour, mais surtout parce que le bassiste Aaran Mckenzie a réuni ses deux passions et a été derrière la caméra pour le court-métrage qui a accompagné la sortie de la chanson à la mi-février. Si vous ne l’avez pas vu, allez le voir maintenant car il est vraiment touchant. Le court-métrage parle d’une relation qui se délite, jusqu’à ce que l’un perde l’autre. Ensuite, nous revenons à une chanson composée d’éléments plus électro, « Out Of The Blue ». Le synthé prend plus de place dans ce morceau, le rythme construit une sorte de tension qui s’accélère vers la fin du morceau. Elle est principalement instrumentale, on peut entendre une voix à l’arrière qui dit parfois « I still love you », la tonalité du téléphone nous fait penser que la personne essaye d’en joindre une autre. « Out Of The Blue » se termine sur une interférence avant que l’on n’entende la boîte vocale indiquant que le numéro n’est pas disponible. Avec  » Enemy Mentality « , nous revenons à quelque chose de plus énergique où la batterie prend les devants avec le chant de Loz qui est assez entraînant. Pendant le refrain, les guitares sont plus présentes avec un son saturé. Cette chanson est prometteuse de bons mosh pits pendant le refrain en live, cependant, les couplets sont plus calmes mais on peut être sûr que l’ensemble fera l’affaire lors d’un concert ! Il est temps de clôturer l’album avec  » Radical Hatred/Radical Love  » qui est un morceau basé sur des guitares douces, pas de gros riffs, pas de grosse batterie, il pourrait presque être joué avec des guitares acoustiques car le morceau est accompagné de cordes. C’est un bon choix pour cette clôture où les paroles de Loz expriment le fait que nous pouvons avoir du mal à nous défaire de ce qui nous fait du mal. Cela nous permet de terminer Self Hell sur un titre à la mélodie plus légère.

While She Sleeps a définitivement pris un tournant avec Self Hell, ils se sont permis d’explorer de nouveaux horizons et de nouveaux styles. Maintenant qu’ils sont là depuis plus d’une décennie et qu’ils se sont établis comme un groupe important de la scène metalcore, il est intéressant de voir quelles surprises ils nous réservent. Nous devrions pouvoir découvrir Self Hell en live prochainement, j’espère personnellement les titres « Enemy Mentality », « Rainbows » ou encore « To The Flowers », car While She Sleeps a récemment annoncé des dates importantes avec d’autres groupes tels que Holding Absence, Bury Tomorrow et d’autres en juin à Strasbourg et Lyon avant de revenir à Paris à l’Elysée Montmartre le 6 novembre 2024.

Three years have passed since Sleeps Society, twelve since their first album This Is The Six, While She Sleeps has known a long and steady climb in the metalcore scene. Fortunately for us, they are not ready to stop now as Self Hell, their sixth album, will be released on March 29th. Self Hell will be released through their own label Sleeps Brothers as the previous albums.

The British band already offered us a glimpse in their album thanks to three singles, however, all of them didn’t differ that much from what we were used to hearing from While She Sleeps. The first title, “Peace of Mind”, is serving as a short intro to the album and is also announcing that Self Hell will allow us to discover new sides of the band. Saturated guitars, ponderous drums and a choir accompanying Loz’s vocals, this is how we enter this new album. The lyrics “Are you afraid of them?” can let us think that the band is ready to face whatever the reaction from the critic will be. “Leave Me Alone” is heavy, starting with storms sounds, then guitars’ riffs before an electronic voice announces “We Are While She Sleeps”. The chorus is catchy with a repetition on the sentence “Leave me the fuck alone” that we can clearly hear. The song ends on some more electronic sounds, we could easily imagine this song to be chosen to open their next round of shows! “We are chasing rainbows into blackholes” that is what announce the band in the chorus of “Rainbows”. The song still lets in more elements from an electro style than we are used to with While She Sleeps, however, screams, riffs and guitar solos are not banned from it.

Time to arrive at “Self Hell”, the eponym title announced the album back in September 2023 and was released with its music video full of neon colors and where everyone seems to have a lot of fun. If you have been able to catch While She Sleeps at the end of September in Brussels then you already heard the single live, but you also know that the band and the public were in a crazy energy, with easy parts that allowed everyone to sing along. “Wildfire” reminds me of the album Brainwashed in the way the lyrics are delivered. The band seems to talk about a renewed energy/confidence. The song fades to let the place to “No Feeling Is Final”. This track features Aether and is totally instrumental, it has something of a post rock song atmosphere. “Dopesick” is another featuring, this time with Fin Power, vocalist and guitarist for STONE. The beginning is very soft with only a guitar before a louder electric guitar joins. The background sounds are more light and the entire melody will be stuck in the corner of our head for the day. As things always come in threes, the album goes on with “Down” which was made with the singer of Malevolence, Alex Taylor. The song was already released in December, it is made for live as we can easily imagine the crazy energy that will conquer the public while they play it.

“To The Flowers” was a special single for the band as it is their first love song but mostly as the bassist Aaran Mckenzie reunited his two passions and was behind the camera for the short film that accompanied the release of the song in mid-february. If you haven’t seen it, go see it now as it is really touching. The short movie is about a relationship that is falling apart, until one loses the other.  Afterwards we are going back to a song that is composed with more electro elements “Out Of The Blue”. The synth is taking more place in this track, the rhythm is building a sort of tension that speeds up towards the end of the song. It is mostly instrumental, we can hear a voice in the back sometimes saying “I still love you”, the dial tone makes us think that the person is trying to reach out to another one. “Out Of The Blue” ends on interference before we hear the voicemail saying the number is unavailable. With “Enemy Mentality” we return to something more energetic where the drums take the lead with Loz’s vocals that are quite catchy. During the chorus, the guitars are more present with a saturated sound. This song is promising for good mosh pits during the chorus in live, however, the verses are calmer but we can be sure that the overall will do great during a concert! Time to close the album with “Radical Hatred/Radical Love” which is a track based on gentle guitars, no big riffs, no tremendous drums, it could almost be played with acoustic guitars as the song is accompanied by strings. It is quite a good choice for this closure where Loz’s lyrics express the fact that we can have some trouble letting go of what is hurting us. It allows us to end Self Hell on a track with a lighter melody.

While She Sleeps definitely took a turn with Self Hell, they allowed themselves to explore new horizons and style. Now that they have been here for more than a decade and that they established themselves as an important band of the metalcore scene it is quite interesting to see what surprises they reserved for us. We should be able to discover Self Hell live soon, I personnaly hope for the tracks “Enemy Mentality”, “Rainbows” or “To The Flowers”, as While She Sleeps recently announced important dates with other bands such as Holding Absence, Bury Tomorrow and others in June in Strasbourg and Lyon before coming once more in Paris at l’Elysée Montmartre on November 6th 2024.
