Ce samedi 23 mars 2024 était une grosse soirée pour les amateurs de hard rock avec deux chanteuses expertes dans le domaine : la chanteuse, guitariste et compositrice Kim Melville en première partie, et la chanteuse, guitariste et multi-instrumentiste Laura Cox. L’occasion de découvrir un set tout frais sur cette troisième date de la tournée, dans un Splendid bien rempli d’habitués des festivals et concerts hard rock de la région. Une belle soirée organisée par Le Bureau Des Spectacles.

20h pétante et une annonce venue de la scène se fait entendre “Mind the gap between the train and the platform” pour nous annoncer le début du concert de Kim Melville ! Direction le hard rock aux accents sudistes de la chanteuse qui, accompagnée de son groupe, ne tarde pas à faire monter l’ambiance sur un premier morceau ultra rythmé, où elle viendra s’équiper plus tard de sa guitare pour jouer le morceau du solo. Le deuxième morceau interpelle les fans de Royal Blood avec une basse fuzzée à souhait et introduisant le morceau de manière puissante avant de laisser le riff aux guitares, en allant se mettre plus en retrait. Troisième morceau et nouveau changement de sonorité puisqu’on découvre un morceau très pop rock dans l’esprit, accompagné de parties de synthés samplés.
Les multiples facettes dans le son de Kim Melville ne sont déjà plus à démontrer, et pourtant c’est un titre beaucoup plus psyché / stoner qui s’offre à nous, avec un côté très oriental dans le riff principal et dans certains passages de batterie / percussions. C’est un sans faute, la frontwoman et son groupe propose un concert varié et pourtant toujours bon, preuve d’une belle capacité à composer intelligemment.Le dernier morceau arrive avec la présentation des différents intervenants de la soirée, dont le groupe, où on découvre la présence pour son premier concert à ses côtés de son frère à la batterie, ainsi que du père de Kim Melville dans la fosse, à qui elle souhaite un joyeux anniversaire plein d’émotions. Une clôture de concert qui se fera dans une ambiance survoltée et chaleureuse, avec un public qui semble conquis par la prestation !
Un changement de plateau plus tard et le concert de Laura Cox commence de bien belle manière avec la guitariste venant entamer une partie de lap-steel (instrument à corde pincée disposé à l’horizontal) sur la guitare qui trônait sur son ampli en devant de scène. Une intro idéale pour nous introduire à son univers teinté de hard rock, de country et de blues, où les trois musiciens l’accompagnant la rejoindront pour commencer le set sur “Bad Luck Blues” qui viendra mettre tout le monde d’accord rapidement. On assiste à une première partie de concert puissante et qui fait bouger le public, avant de s’orienter vers quelques morceaux plus calmes faisant la part belle aux synthés que Laura Cox vient co-interpréter avec son musicien.
Se succèdent parmi ses classiques “Take Me Back Home” (issu du répertoire du Laura Cox Band), “River” ou encore “Hard Blues Shot” (Laura Cox Band), avant que la chanteuse nous demande si on aime le rock’n’roll, avant d’interpréter le morceau aux allures d’hymne “Too Nice for Rock’n’Roll”. On retrouve aussi plus loin dans le set des morceaux du dernier album en date, sorti début 2023, dont le morceau éponyme “Head Above Water” qui sera un moment fort du concert. Après avoir quitté la scène, un classique rappel s’impose avec l’enchaînement de “One Big Mess” (où Laura Cox demande au public de reprendre en chœur les paroles) et “If You Wanna Get Loud (Come to the Show)” qui viendront achever les cordes vocales d’une majorité du public !
Cette soirée était l’occasion rêvée pour tous les amateurs du genre de découvrir le tout nouveau show de la talentueuse Laura Cox et le charisme endiablé de Kim Melville. 100% women-fronted, cette soirée est aussi l’occasion de voir évoluer des artistes dans un genre de musique très masculin, et prouvent qu’elles y ont plus que leur place avec des morceaux variés et ravageurs ! Pour les personnes n’ayant pas pu assister au concert, on ne peux que vous inviter à découvrir les deux musiciennes sur une prochaine date de la tournée, ou bien à découvrir Kim Melville dans la région au Raismes Fest les 7 et 8 septembre !

Saturday March 23rd was a big night for hard rock fans, with two expert singers in the field: singer, guitarist and songwriter Kim Melville as support act, and singer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Laura Cox. A chance to discover a fresh set on this third date of the tour, in a Splendid packed with regulars from the region’s hard rock festivals and concerts. A wonderful night of music crafted by Le Bureau Des Spectacles.

8pm sharp and an announcement from the stage « Mind the gap between the train and the platform » heralds the start of Kim Melville‘s concert! The singer’s southern-flavoured hard rock, accompanied by her band, soon gets the atmosphere going on an ultra-rhythmic first track, on which she later dons her guitar to play the solo track. The second track has Royal Blood fans on their feet with a fuzzed-out bass that introduces the song in a powerful way, before leaving the riffing to the guitars, who take a step back. Third track and another change of sound, as we discover a very pop rock track in spirit, accompanied by sampled synth parts.
Kim Melville‘s multi-faceted sound is already well established, yet this is a much more psychedelic / stoner track, with a very oriental feel to the main riff and some of the drum / percussion passages. It’s a flawless performance, the frontwoman and her band putting on a varied yet consistently good show, proof of their ability to compose intelligently. The last track arrives with the presentation of the evening’s various participants, including the band, where we discover the presence of her brother on drums for her first concert alongside her, as well as Kim Melville‘s father in the pit, to whom she wishes a happy birthday full of emotion. The concert came to a close in an overexcited and warm atmosphere, with the audience seemingly won over by the performance!
A change of stage later, and Laura Cox‘s concert got off to a great start, with the guitarist playing lap-steel (a horizontal plucked string instrument) on the guitar that sat on top of her amp at the front of the stage. An ideal introduction to her world of hard rock, country and blues, where the three musicians accompanying her join in to start the set with « Bad Luck Blues », which quickly gets everyone on the same wavelength. The first part of the concert was powerful and got the audience moving, before moving on to some calmer tracks featuring synths that Laura Cox co-interpreted with her musician.
Among her classics are « Take Me Back Home » (from the Laura Cox Band repertoire), « River » and « Hard Blues Shot » (Laura Cox Band), before the singer asks us if we like rock’n’roll, before performing the anthemic « Too Nice for Rock’n’Roll ». Later in the set, there were tracks from the latest album, released in early 2023, including the eponymous ‘Head Above Water’, which was a highlight of the concert. After leaving the stage, a classic encore followed with « One Big Mess » (in which Laura Cox asked the audience to sing along to the lyrics) and « If You Wanna Get Loud (Come to the Show) », which left most of the audience with their vocal cords in knots!
The evening was the perfect opportunity for fans of the genre to discover the brand new show by the talented Laura Cox and the wild charisma of Kim Melville. 100% women-fronted, this evening was also an opportunity to see artists evolve in a very masculine genre of music, and prove that they have more than their place with varied and devastating tracks! For those of you who weren’t able to make it to the concert, we urge you to check out the two musicians on a forthcoming date on the tour, or catch Kim Melville in the region at Raismes Fest on the 7th and 8th of September !
