Retour à l’Aéronef pour une date que nous attendions de pied ferme depuis plusieurs mois, celle de Chinese Man! Affichant complète depuis de longues semaines, cette date est clairement un immanquable de ce début de printemps. Pour accompagner le collectif, nous retrouvons Isadora, chanteuse belge venue tout droit de Liège. C’est dans une grande salle pleine à craquer que nous arrivons prêts à partir voyager en musique avec le collectif aixois.

On commence donc avec Isadora qui arrive sur scène accompagnée de son guitariste/claviériste. La chanteuse belge nous présente son univers entre pop et quelques notes d’indie. On est étonné par ce choix en première partie mais elle semble conquérir assez vite le public lillois qui applaudit les compositions issues de son EP déjà disponible et d’un nouveau encore en préparation. Notre hôte de début de soirée danse, chante et nous amène avec elles dans ses histoires de coeur, ses joies, ses peines et autres histoires de vie. En milieu de set elle nous proposera même une petite reprise toute douce de « Mamma Mia » d’Abba qui n’aura aucun mal à faire chanter le public. Entre guitare et claviers, le musicien qui l’accompagne ajoute de belles parties instrumentales aux compositions et nous montre tout son talent. Après un set d’une petite demi-heure Isadora quitte la scène très applaudie par un public en grande partie conquis.
Après une mise en place minutieuse, la scène de Chinese Man se dévoile et on découvre les trois tables prêtes à accueillir les trois DJ du collectif placées devant un mur d’écrans placés en arc de cercle. La lumière se baisse et le film nous plongeant dans l’univers visuel science fictionnel de l’album We’ve Been Here Before, dont on vous a parlé lors de sa sortie. C’est parti pour une belle aventure musicale en compagnie de Zé Matéo, High Ku et SLY. Le mélange hip hop, dub et électro du collectif nous emporte en quelques secondes et on se prend rapidement au jeu de danser tout comme tout le public présent dans la salle lilloise. Rapidement les trois DJs sont rejoints par un trio de cuivres, composé d’une trompettiste, d’une saxophoniste et d’une tromboniste qui apportent un vrai côté jazzy aux morceaux joués ce soir. Puis ce sont des vocalistes qui rejoignent la partie pour un concert qui ne fait que monter en puissance. Entre les flows imparables Youthstar et de Stogie T et la voix douce d’Isadora qui fait son retour sur scène on en prend plein les tympans pour notre plus grand plaisir. Les visuels sur l’écran matchent parfaitement avec les structures métalliques mouvantes qui entourent les spots au dessus du collectif. Chaque nouveau morceau joué nous fait voyager dans la discographie du groupe et les fans de la première heure seront ravis de retrouver de nombreux classiques sur la setlist. L’ambiance est électrique et solos impressionnants de Rozann Bézier au trombone ou encore Alejandra Borzyk au saxophone. On ne pouvait rêver plus belle soirée, loin de nos concerts où les guitares sont reines. Ici les scratch et lignes vocales imparables nous donnent des frissons et on est ravi de vivre ce moment en compagnie de chaque personne sur scène. On ne voit pas le temps passer et lorsque le groupe annonce la fin de soirée on se dit qu’on en aurait bien repris une petite dose supplémentaire. Et ça sera chose faite dans un final en apothéose où toutes l’équipe rejoint la scène pour un dernier titre qui nous enchantera une fois encore, avec des prestations inoubliables d’un bout à l’autre. Tout le collectif quitte la scène en remerciant le public pour l’accueil et en annonçant qu’après un passage au merch ils seront de retour sur scène pour un DJ set supplémentaire pour poursuivre encore cette belle communion avec son public un peu plus longuement.
C’est après une soirée musicale très réussie que nous quittons la salle en ayant la certitude d’avoir vu un véritable spectacle livré par Chinese Man. Autant musicalement que visuellement le show était totale et la cohésion entre toutes les personnes sur scène était évidente. On ne pouvait espérer plus belle soirée et on restera longtemps avec les souvenirs de ce magnifique concert!

Back at the Aeronef for a show we’ve been eagerly awaiting for several months: Chinese Man! Sold out for weeks, this date is clearly a must-see for early spring. Accompanying them is Isadora, a Belgian singer straight from Liège. We arrived to a packed house ready to go on a musical journey with the Aix-En-Provence collective.

Isadora takes to the stage accompanied by her guitarist/keyboardist. The Belgian singer introduces us to her world of pop with a hint of indie. We were surprised by her choice of opening act, but she soon seemed to win over the Lille audience, who applauded her compositions from her EP, already available and a new one still in preparation. Our host at the start of the evening dances, sings and takes us along in her stories of the heart, her joys, her sorrows and other stories of life. In the middle of her set, she even does a sweet little cover of Abba‘s ‘Mamma Mia’, which has no trouble getting the audience singing along. Between guitar and keyboards, the musician who accompanies her adds beautiful instrumental parts to the compositions and shows us all his talent. After a set lasting just under half an hour, Isadora left the stage to rapturous applause from a largely conquered audience.
After a meticulous set-up, the Chinese Man stage is revealed, with the three tables ready to welcome the three DJs of the collective placed in front of a wall of screens placed in an arc. The lights dim and the film plunges us into the visual science fiction world of the album We’ve Been Here Before, which we told you about when it was released. Then it’s off on a musical adventure with Zé Matéo, High Ku and SLY. The collective’s blend of hip hop, dub and electro took us away in a matter of seconds, and we were soon dancing along with the rest of the audience in the Lille venue. The three DJs are soon joined by a brass trio, made up of a trumpet player, a saxophonist and a trombonist, who bring a real jazzy edge to the tracks played this evening. Then the vocalists join in for a concert that just goes from strength to strength. Between the unstoppable flows of Youthstar and Stogie T and the gentle voice of Isadora, who makes her return to the stage, we’re in for a real treat. The visuals on the screen were a perfect match for the moving metal structures surrounding the spotlights above the collective. Each new track played takes us on a journey through the band’s discography, and die-hard fans will be delighted to find a number of classics on the setlist. The atmosphere is electric, with impressive solos from Rozann Bézier on trombone and Alejandra Borzyk on saxophone. We couldn’t have wished for a better evening, a far cry from our usual guitar-heavy concerts. Here, the scratches and unstoppable vocal lines send shivers down our spines, and we’re delighted to experience this moment in the company of everyone on stage. Time flies and when the band announce the end of the evening, you think you could do with a little extra. And that’s exactly what happens, as the whole team take to the stage for a final track that will enchant us once again, with unforgettable performances from start to finish. The whole collective left the stage, thanking the audience for their warm welcome and announcing that after a stint in the merch they would be back on stage for another DJ set to continue this beautiful communion with their audience a little longer.
After a very successful evening of music, we left the venue with the certainty of having seen a real show delivered by Chinese Man. Both musically and visually, the show was total and the cohesion between everyone on stage was obvious. We couldn’t have hoped for a better evening, and the memories of this magnificent concert will stay with us for a long time to come!
