Pour bien terminer la semaine et commencer le weekend, c’est à The Black Lab que nous nous sommes rendus ce vendredi 5 avril afin de plonger dans l’univers coloré de Tip Stevens mais aussi d’en profiter pour découvrir (ou redécouvrir) le groupe lillois Temps Calme qui ouvre la soirée. Un mélange qui nous promet une belle soirée aux sons pop rock.

Temps Calme prend timidement sa place sur scène. Positionné en forme de triangle, afin que chacun soit bien visible, on retrouve Olivier Desmulliez à la guitare, Samuel Allain au clavier et au chant ainsi que Nicolas Degrande à la batterie. Il ne faudra pas longtemps avant que le trio nous entraîne dans leur univers de pop psyché qui nous rappelle aussi des traits du post-rock. Sur scène, chacun a donc son instrument et bien qu’Olivier lead le chant, ses acolytes l’accompagnent aussi sur les chœurs. Temps Calme, qui n’est pas aussi calme que leur nom laisse croire, nous plonge donc dans une atmosphère assez sombre et instrumentale où les musiciens sont entourés de “pics” lumineux qui ajoutent une touche plus claire et vibrante par endroits. On retrouve une bonne balance entre les instruments et le trio est parfait pour échauffer le public qui répond présent sur les quelques interactions de Samuel Allain.
On change de plateau et on se retrouve avec une scène beaucoup pour sobre et dégagée, des néons placés à la verticale de part et d’autre de la batterie au fond de la scène, ainsi que trois micros à l’avant pour accueillir Tip Stevens et ses musiciens. C’est sous l’impatience du public que Tip Stevens arrive sur scène le sourire aux lèvres. Le temps de dire quelques mots pour saluer et ouvrir cette tournée avant de lancer le concert avec “I’m Not Your Friend”. Le public est déjà à fond et chante les paroles à tue-tête. L’énergie du groupe sur scène est tout aussi palpable, ils sautent, échangent des grands sourires, jouent par moment en face à face et tout cela ne fait qu’augmenter la proximité avec l’audience. Dès les premières notes de “Miracle” c’est l’effervescence dans la salle mais le climax de la soirée sera atteint bien plus tard avec “Sugar Rush”, qui fait partie du dernier EP, sorti en mai 2023. Entre temps, Tip Stevens nous a révélé qu’ils sont en train de travailler sur l’enregistrement de morceaux acoustiques et en ont dont profité du milieu de set pour interpréter “Right On Time” avec Tip à la guitare accompagné uniquement d’Anto (bassiste), l’ambiance devient plus tamisé mais quelques lumières éparses apparaissent dans le public. En parlant de lumières, on peut facilement remarquer que les ensembles de couleurs de chaque EP sont réutilisés pour illuminer et colorer la scène en fonction des morceaux ce qui rend l’atmosphère changeante et agréable. Lorsque Tip Stevens annonce la fin du concert, le public en demande encore, mais il y a encore quelques surprises prévues pour la soirée.
Depuis le début de la soirée, Tip Stevens a mentionné plusieurs fois que cette tournée sert de transition suite à la fin d’Animals Vol 1, ce premier ensemble de cinq EPs sorti entre mai 2021 et mai 2023. Une tradition avait lieu à chaque concert, le dernier morceau joué était “Home”, avec la fin d’Animals Vol 1, ils pensaient arrêter de faire cela. Pourtant Tip Stevens demande au public de lui faire une place dans la fosse avant d’annoncer qu’il va jouer le morceau sans micro. C’est un moment très émouvant qui s’ensuit, tout le monde dans la salle s’assoit et laisse le centre pour Tip Stevens et sa guitare qui s’impose avec ce morceau afin de clôturer la soirée. Pour une première et un test, on peut dire que l’effet est réussi et très touchant ! En espérant qu’il n’hésitera pas à réitérer cette expérience pour les prochaines dates de la tournée !
Cette soirée à The Black Lab nous a permis de recharger les batteries et d’être prêt pour la suite du weekend. Tip Stevens, tout autant que Temps Calme, avaient une énergie et surtout une bonne humeur qui était contagieuse ! Les groupes nous ont présenté des atmosphères qui leur sont propres et n’ont pas hésité à emmener le public avec eux !

To round off the week and kick off the weekend, we headed to The Black Lab on Friday 5 April to immerse ourselves in the colourful world of Tip Stevens and discover (or rediscover) Lille band Temps Calme, who opened the evening. It’s a mix that promises to be a great evening of pop rock.

Temps Calme timidly took to the stage. Positioned in the shape of a triangle, so that everyone is clearly visible, we find Olivier Desmulliez on guitar, Samuel Allain on keyboard and vocals and Nicolas Degrande on drums. It doesn’t take long for the trio to draw us into their world of psychedelic pop, which also reminds us of post-rock. On stage, everyone has their own instrument, and although Olivier leads the vocals, his sidekicks also accompany him on backing vocals. Temps Calme, which isn’t quite as calm as its name suggests, plunges us into a fairly dark, instrumental atmosphere where the musicians are surrounded by luminous ‘peaks’ that add a brighter, more vibrant touch in places. There’s a good balance between the instruments and the trio are perfect for warming up the audience, who respond to Samuel Allain‘s occasional interactions.
The stage was changed to a much more sober and uncluttered one, with neon lights placed vertically on either side of the drums at the back of the stage, and three microphones at the front to welcome Tip Stevens and his musicians. With the audience in raptures, Tip Stevens arrived on stage with a smile on his face. He says a few words of greeting and opens the tour before launching the concert with « I’m Not Your Friend ». The crowd are already into it, singing the lyrics at the top of their lungs. The band’s on-stage energy is just as palpable, jumping up and down, exchanging big smiles and occasionally playing face-to-face, all of which only increases the closeness with the audience. From the very first notes of ‘Miracle’, the room was buzzing with excitement, but the climax of the evening came much later with ‘Sugar Rush’, part of the latest EP, released in May 2023. In the meantime, Tip Stevens had revealed that they were currently working on recording some acoustic tracks, so they took advantage of the middle of the set to perform « Right On Time » with Tip on guitar accompanied only by Anto (bassist), the atmosphere becomes more subdued but a few scattered lights appear in the audience. Speaking of lights, it’s easy to see that the colour schemes from each EP are reused to illuminate and colour the stage according to the songs, making for a pleasantly changing atmosphere. By the time Tip Stevens announced the end of the concert, the audience was still clamouring for more, but there were still a few surprises planned for the evening.
Since the start of the evening, Tip Stevens has mentioned several times that this tour serves as a transition following the end of Animals Vol 1, the first set of five EPs released between May 2021 and May 2023. There used to be a tradition at every concert of playing ‘Home’ as the last track, but with the end of Animals Vol 1, they thought they’d stop doing that. However, Tip Stevens asked the audience to make room for him in the pit before announcing that he was going to play the song without a microphone. A very moving moment ensued, with everyone in the room taking their seats and leaving the centre stage for Tip Stevens and his guitar, who made his mark with this song to close the evening. For a first and a test, we can say that the effect is successful and very touching! Let’s hope he doesn’t hesitate to repeat the experience on future shows!
The evening at The Black Lab gave us a chance to recharge our batteries and get ready for the rest of the weekend. Tip Stevens, like Temps Calme, had an energy and above all a good humour that was contagious! The bands presented their own unique atmospheres and didn’t hesitate to take the audience along with them!
