Si vous aimiez le core, c’est au Trix d’Anvers qu’il fallait être ce samedi 6 avril. Une belle tournée de quatres groupes américains à travers l’Europe, mais sans passage en France qui nous a fait prendre la route jusqu’en Belgique. Les Californiens de Spite et leur deathcore ravageur sont venus avec Bodysnatcher, notre coup de coeur Boundaries et Mouth For War. Une belle date immanquable donc qui a ramené pas mal de monde.

Il aura fallu d’à peine 30 minutes de retard pour que le hall du Trix soient totalement rempli, et propose une situation assez rigolote. Un mélange des genres entrent les coreux en nombre qui attendaient l’ouverture du club, et le public tout de rose vêtu pour le concert de Racoon, lui dans la grande salle.
C’est devant une salle prête pour la bagarre que Mouth For War prennent place. Ce n’est pas souvent que l’on voit du hardcore du Colorado, et l’expérience en vaut la chandelle. Avec un chant presque carthartique, Trae Roberts se lance dans 30 minutes de chant puissant qui est loin de laisser le public de marbre. Les premiers two-steps de la soirée font déjà leur apparition. Alors que la première partie du set est plutôt brutale et sans concession, l’apparition au chant clair adoucit la session rythmique basse-batterie jusqu’ici totalement martelé. Il est clair que Mouth For War ont attiré notre attention, et on va très vite se plonger dans leur discographie. Les américains nous proposent tout de même un échantillon assez représentative de leur musique puisqu’on entendra à la fois leur dernier single, que leur tout premier morceau en clôture de set.
Boundaries sont la raison principale de notre déplacement ce soir et on ne cache pas notre excitation de les voir. Ce soir, la pression n’est pas que sur le dos des musiciens puisque le groupe nous indiquera très vite que leur dernier passage à Anvers en ouverture de l’Impericon Never Say Die Fest en 2022 est loin d’avoir été une bonne expérience. Pas de panique puisque le public est plus que prêt pour chanter et mosher sur les titres de leur dernier album Death Is Little More, sorti il y a à peine une semaine. Les musiciens sont d’une précision impressionnante, offrant un set impeccable. On aurait aimer avoir un mix de la voix plus important, mais qu’importe, le public saura trouver de la voix. Ca bouge bien et on se délecte de chaque morceaux. Avec de beaux breakdowns écrasants et renforçant les émotions criées ce soir, Boundaries ont clairement trouvé leur public.
Il est temps de s’élancer du côté du deathcore avec Bodysnatcher. Tel un chef d’orchestre, Kyle Medina réclamera 2-step, side to side, et stage dive. En bref, interdiction de rester immobile devant leur prestation. Bodysnatcher proposent un son beaucoup plus lourd que leur prédécesseur et les basses seront très très lourde ce soir. Chaque musicien a une prestance scénique assez impressionnante. On sent qu’une bonne partie du public a fait le déplacement pour les voir et nombreux sont ceux qui tenteront d’avoir le micro pour chanter. De mon côté, c’était une découverte totale ce soir et même si leur prestation sera celle qui me touchera le moins de la soirée, il est indéniable que le groupe est plein de ressource et propose un set de qualité.
« California’ Dreaming » des Mama’s & The Papa’s se lance pour accueillir Spite en clôture de cette belle soirée. Spite sont d’une précision sans faille et chaque riff s’amplifie pour un deathcore des plus impressionnants. C’est un réel spectacle que nous propose Darius ce soir puisqu’il se roulera au sol, rampera, tentera des positions plus improbables les unes que les autres, et tout ça sans lâcher le micro. C’est néanmoins Joshua Slater à la batterie qui offrira une set dont un entrainement pour avoir cette endurance sera nécessaire. Le sol de la salle, déjà bien collant et rempli de bière, continuera d’accueillir les mosheurs même si on s’attendait à une vraie amplification du pit. Le public restera tout de même assez timide. Leur prestation passera à une vitesse folle et on est assez content d’avoir vu les américains ce soir.
Cette belle soirée au Trix a sonné comme un entrainement avant d’attaquer les grosses venues deathcore et hardcore de l’été. Les quatre groupes américains ont de réels arguments pour une carrière intéressante, et semble avoir déjà chacun toucher un public assez vaste entre hardcore straight edge, metalcore classique ou deathcore moderne.

If you’re a core music fan, the Trix in Antwerp was the place to be on Saturday 6 April. A great tour of four American bands across Europe, but without a stopover in France, took us all the way to Belgium. The Californians from Spite and their devastating deathcore came along with Bodysnatcher, our favourites Boundaries and Mouth For War. It was a date not to be missed, and one that drew quite a crowd.

It took barely 30 minutes for the Trix hall to fill up completely, and it was a pretty funny situation. A mix of genres, with a large number of core fans waiting for the club to open, and a pink-clad audience for Racoon’s concert in the main hall.
Mouth For War take to the stage in front of a room ready for a fight. It’s not often you get to see Colorado hardcore, and the experience is well worth the candle. With vocals that are almost carthartic, Trae Roberts launches into 30 minutes of powerful singing that is far from leaving the audience unmoved. The first two-steps of the evening are already making their appearance. While the first part of the set was rather brutal and uncompromising, the appearance of clean vocals softened the bass-drums rhythm session, which until then had been totally hammered. It’s clear that Mouth For War have caught our attention, and we’re about to dive into their discography. The Americans offer us a fairly representative sample of their music, as we hear both their latest single and their very first track at the end of the set.
Boundaries are the main reason we’re here tonight, and there’s no hiding our excitement at seeing them. Tonight, the pressure isn’t just on the musicians, as the band are quick to point out that their last visit to Antwerp to open the Impericon Never Say Die Fest in 2022 was far from a good experience. But don’t panic, the crowd are more than ready to sing along and mosher to tracks from their latest album, Death Is Little More, released barely a week ago. The musicians are impressively precise, delivering an impeccable set. We’d have liked to have had a bigger vocal mix, but who cares, the audience will be able to find their voices. There’s plenty of movement here, and we’re enjoying every track. With beautiful, crushing breakdowns reinforcing the emotions shouted out this evening, Boundaries have clearly found their audience.
It’s time to take a swing at deathcore with Bodysnatcher. Like an orchestra conductor, Kyle Medina will be calling for 2-step, side to side and stage dive. In short, you won’t be able to sit still while they perform. Bodysnatcher have a much heavier sound than their predecessor, and the bass will be very, very heavy tonight. Each musician has an impressive stage presence. You can tell that a good chunk of the audience have come out to see them, and many of them will try to get hold of the mike to sing along. As far as I’m concerned, tonight was a total discovery, and even if their performance was the one that touched me the least of the evening, there’s no denying that the band are full of resources and put on a quality set.
« California’ Dreaming » by The Mama’s & The Papa’s kicks in to welcome Spite as the closing track of this fine evening. Spite‘s precision is flawless, and every riff is amplified for some of the most impressive deathcore around. Darius puts on a real show tonight, rolling around on the floor, crawling around and trying out the most improbable positions, all without letting go of the microphone. It’s Joshua Slater on drums, however, who will deliver a set that will require some training to build up the stamina. The floor of the venue, already sticky and full of beer, will continue to welcome the mosheurs even if we were expecting a real amplification of the pit. The crowd remained fairly shy. Their set went by at breakneck speed, and we were glad to have seen the Americans this evening.
This fine evening at the Trix sounded like training before tackling the big deathcore and hardcore events of the summer. The four American bands have a real case for an interesting career, and each seems to have already reached a fairly wide audience, ranging from straight edge hardcore to classic metalcore and modern deathcore.
