Le groupe américain SeeYouSpaceCowboy est de retour ce vendredi 19 avril avec son troisième album studio chez Pure Noise Records. Une fois de plus, ils se sont renouvelés en nous présentant Coup de Grâce, qui offre un concept visuel. Des personnages fictifs nous emmènent à travers leurs vies avec le bruit violent et chaotique caractéristique du groupe post hardcore, mais cette fois avec des moments plus mélodiques incorporés dans les morceaux.

Coup de Grâce pourrait être décrit comme un roman graphique sous forme musicale, et la première chose qui nous le fait remarquer, ce sont les titres des douze chansons. Chacun d’entre eux pourrait être le titre d’un chapitre, et pour commencer l’album, quoi de mieux qu’une courte introduction. « Allow Us To Set The Scene » nous montre clairement que SeeYouSpaceCowboy nous emmène quelque part de nouveau, avec des vibrations jazzy, nous avons l’impression d’être transportés à une autre époque, il y a quelques décennies, dans une atmosphère de cabaret. Ce premier morceau mélange plusieurs influences, du jazz à leur son hardcore classique, avec même un peu de hip-hop sur les notes de basse. Comme le titre l’explique, c’est un excellent moyen de mettre l’auditeur dans le contexte de cet album. Dès la deuxième chanson « Subtle Whispers To Take Your Breath Away », on remarque que SeeYouSpaceCowboy a décidé d’intégrer des mélodies plus douces à leur son féroce. Le morceau commence par de douces notes de guitare et débouche sur une mélodie entraînante et vivante. Ce n’est pas la seule chanson avec ces particularités puisque plus tard dans l’album nous avons « To The Dance Floor For Shelter » qui fait intervenir Courtney LaPlante (Spiritbox). Probablement l’une des chansons les plus mélodiques et captivantes de l’album, vous l’avez probablement déjà entendue puisqu’elle est sortie avec sa vidéo fin mars, mais elle a rapidement trouvé sa place dans ma playlist.

Dans la première partie de l’album, « Red Wine and Discontent », le dernier single sorti, nous offre une ambiance assez emo revisitée par l’énergie du groupe et se termine sur un cri laissant la place à une ligne de basse qui introduit « Lubricant Like Kerosene ». Le titre met en scène Kim Dracula dont la voix plus grave se marie parfaitement avec la ligne de basse. Leur énergie est en parfaite adéquation avec celle du groupe !

Les chansons s’enchaînent avec une grande fluidité, rien ne semble déplacé même lorsqu’au milieu de l’album nous avons un interlude avec « Respite For A Tragic Tale », renouant avec la première piste, revenant à l’atmosphère jazzy de cabaret avec iRis.EXE permettant une pause poétique. Les gens applaudissent à la fin, ce qui permet à « Silhouette In Motion » de commencer avec le tempo des battements de mains avant que les guitares ne se joignent à eux. Une fois de plus, la chanson alterne entre des moments calmes et chaotiques avec un excellent équilibre. Le dernier featuring de l’album est avec nothing, nowhere, la chanteuse apporte une touche d’emo rock dans « Rhythm And Rapture ». L’album se termine par le titre « Curtain Call », titre parfait pour clore cette aventure visuelle/musicale. La chanson la plus longue de l’album passe, une fois de plus, par plusieurs styles musicaux. Elle commence par le son d’une guitare douce et d’une voix qui semble un peu distante, mais on sent que quelque chose se prépare. Le tempo s’accélère et c’est à nouveau la pagaille. La clôture se fera sur quelques notes de piano et le mot « Adieu »

Avec ce troisième album, SeeYouSpaceCowboy nous a montré que même s’ils ne partagent pas leurs pensées intimes et privées, comme c’était le cas dans l’album précédent, ils sont toujours capables de nous faire ressentir des choses et de nous raconter de belles histoires. Coup de Grâce est un album que vous devez écouter du début à la fin, et apprécier chaque influence car elle a été choisie avec soin.

The American band SeeYouSpaceCowboy is back this Friday April 19th with their third studio album through Pure Noise Records. Once again, they renewed themselves by presenting us Coup de Grâce, which offers a visual concept. Fictional characters are taking us through their lives with the signature violent and chaotic noise of the post hardcore band, however this time with more melodic moments incorporated into the tracks.

Coup de Grâce could be described as a graphic novel in the musical form, and the first thing that can make us notice that is the titles of the twelve songs. Each one could be the title of a chapter, and to start the album what could be better than a short introduction. “Allow Us To Set The Scene” is definitely showing us that SeeYouSpaceCowboy is taking us somewhere new, with jazzy vibes we feel like we are transported to another time, some decades ago in a cabaret-like atmosphere. This first track is mixing several influences from jazz to their classical hardcore sound with even some hip-hop on bass notes. As the title explains, it is great to put the listener into a kind of context for this record. From the second song “Subtle Whispers To Take Your Breath Away” we notice that SeeYouSpaceCowboy decided to integrate more gentle melodies in their ferocious edges. The track starts with gentle guitar notes and will lead to a catchy and lively tune. It is not the only song with these particularities as later in the album we have “To The Dance Floor For Shelter” which features Courtney LaPlante (Spiritbox). Probably as one of the most melodic and captivating songs of the album, you probably already heard it as it was released alongside its video late March, it did quickly find its place in my playlist. 

In the first part of the album “Red Wine and Discontent”, the last single released, gives us quite an emo vibe revisited by the band energy and ends on a scream letting the place to a bass line that introduces “Lubricant Like Kerosene”. The track features Kim Dracula whose deeper voice goes perfectly with the bass line. Their energy is a great match with the band! 

The songs follow each other with a great fluidity, nothing seems out of place even when in the middle of the album we have an interlude with “Respite For A Tragic Tale”,  reconnecting with the first track, back to the jazzy cabaret-like atmosphere with iRis.EXE enabling a poetic break. People clapping at the end allow “Silhouette In Motion” to start with just the tempo of clapping hands before the guitars join in. Once again the song is alternating between calm and chaotic moments with a great balance. The last featuring of the album is with nothing,nowhere., the singer brings a touch of emo rock inside “Rhythm And Rapture”. The album ends with the title “Curtain Call”, the perfect title to close this visual/musical adventure. The longest song of the record goes, once again, through several musical styles. It starts with the sound of a gentle guitar and a voice that seems a little bit distant, however we can feel that something is coming. The tempo accelerates and then it’s a moment of mayhem again. The closure will be done on a few piano notes and the word “Adieu”

With this third album SeeYouSpaceCowboy showed us that even though they are not sharing their private and inner thoughts, as it has been the case in the previous record, they are still able to make us feel things and tell us great stories. Coup de Grâce is something that you must listen to from the beginning to the end, and appreciate each influence as it was built for this.
