L’an dernier nous découvrirons Patriarchy dans le cadre des Vagues de Froid organisées par Cerbère Coryphée et nous avions clairement pris une claque devant l’univers du groupe américain. Retour à La Malterie un peu plus d’un an plus tard pour un nouveau set de la formation américaine, mais cette fois-ci accompagnée par Void Vision et Aux Animaux que l’on découvre ce soir. C’est donc prêts pour des rythmes froids et syncopés que nous nous rendons dans la salle lilloise très bien entourés.

La lumière s’éteint et c’est la suédoise Aux Animaux qui débarque avec tout son attirail musical et visuel posé sur la scène. Elle allume doucement des bougies avant de nous plonger en quelques secondes dans son univers darkwave des plus réussis. Nous lisant tout d’abord un poème son visage dissimulée par un voilage rouge elle nous dévoilera ensuite ses talents au thérémine, qu’elle maîtrise comme personne. Froids et dansants les morceaux n’auront aucun mal à conquérir les cœurs du public lillois présent ce soir. On se plonge aisément dans cette proposition entre froideur gothique et chaleur électronique qui ne laisse clairement pas indifférent. On retiendra son hommage à Soft Moon et à Luis Vasquez disparu il y a peu avec une cover envoutante à souhait. La prestation de la musicienne est hypnotique et nous enchante de bout en bout. Elle nous quitte avec une dernière session de danse envoutante mêlée à sa voix prenante qui nous laisse sur une excellente note et une belle découverte pour cette nouvelle Vague de Froid.
On continue rapidement avec Void Vision, projet électronique solo de Shari Vari, musicienne basée à Philadelphie. Devant ses claviers et autres pads elles nous transporte dans un monde où l’analogique et la froideur ne font qu’un. La danse reprend vite ses droits et le public se lance dans une série de mouvements saccadés collants parfaitement aux titres de la musicienne. Une fois encore, la proposition est étonnante et prenante, même si de notre côté on trouve que cela manque un peu de punch, malgré une prestation excellente de bout en bout. On laisse le public danser et on part écouter la fin du set depuis le fond de la salle, et clairement côté composition et interprétation on ne peut que saluer le travail de l’artiste américaine.
Il est l’heure de retrouver Patriarchy qui se présentent à nous ce soir en duo, alors que leur précédent passage s’était fait en trio. Au premier abord plus sobre que la fois dernière, la prestation du groupe américain nous rappelle vite que le mélange entre métal indus et morceaux plus électroniques des américains n’a rien perdu de son énergie et de cette envie de nous plonger dans une ambiance hautement électrisante. Actually Huizenga est toujours aussi envoutante et captive le public avec sa performance inoubliable et ses regards tous plus captivants les uns que les autres. On sent une véritable osmose entre le duo et le public n’hésite pas à remuer aux rythmes des morceaux du groupe. Plus le set avance, plus l’énergie animale et sexuelle qui se dégage de la performance monte en puissance, et atteindra son point culminant lorsque la chanteuse finira a genoux sur scène à moitié dénudée pour nous interpréter une des compositions les plus puissantes de cette belle soirée. Le public ressent l’urgence, la colère et les combats qui se dégagent des morceaux et applaudit largement le groupe et donne toute son énergie pour une fin de soirée en apothéose. On salue la belle performance du percussionniste de la formation qui jouera debout tout le set en mettant toute son énergie dans chacune des frappes sur son tambour. La formation a habitée la Malterie ce soir et nous laisse avec une fois encore la conviction d’avoir vu un groupe unique qui ne ressemble à rien d’autre que l’on connait! On quitte la salle ravis de les avoir retrouvé et prêt à remettre ça très bientôt.
Cette nouvelle Vague de Froid made in Cerbère Coryphée a une fois encore tenue ses promesses avec trois propositions uniques en leur genre et qui nous laissent heureux de voir la vitalité de cette scène underground qu’on aime tant. On vous encourage à suivre de près la programmation car il ne serait pas étonnant de revoir ces soirées débarquer très rapidement pour de nouvelles affiches d’une froideur accueillante.

Last year we discovered Patriarchy as part of the Vague de Froid organised by Cerbère Coryphée, and we were clearly smitten by the American band’s universe. Back at La Malterie a little over a year later for another set from the American band, but this time accompanied by Void Vision and Aux Animaux, who we’re discovering tonight. So it’s with cold, syncopated rhythms in mind that we head to the Lille venue, where we’ll be well looked after.

The lights went down and Aux Animaux from Sweden arrived with all her musical and visual paraphernalia on stage. She gently lit candles before plunging us into her highly successful darkwave universe in a matter of seconds. She begins by reading us a poem, her face hidden by a red veil, before revealing her talents on the theremin, which she masters like no other. Cold and danceable, the songs have no trouble winning over the hearts of the Lille audience present this evening. It’s easy to immerse yourself in this mix of gothic coldness and electronic warmth, and it’s clear that you won’t be left indifferent. Her tribute to Soft Moon and Luis Vasquez, who passed away a short while ago, is particularly noteworthy, with a cover that’s as bewitching as you could wish for. The musician’s performance is hypnotic and enchanting from start to finish. She leaves us with a final spellbinding dance session, mixed with her captivating voice, leaving us on an excellent note and a great discovery for this new Vague de Froid.
Then there’s Void Vision, a solo electronic project by Philadelphia-based musician Shari Vari. In front of her keyboards and pads, she transports us into a world where analogue and cold are one. The dance quickly takes over, and the audience launches into a series of jerky movements perfectly in tune with the musician’s tracks. Once again, it’s a surprising and captivating proposition, even if we find that it lacks a bit of punch, despite an excellent performance from start to finish. We left the audience to dance and listened to the end of the set from the back of the room, and it’s clear that the American artist has done a great job in terms of composition and interpretation.
It’s time to catch up with Patriarchy, who come to us tonight as a duo, whereas their previous appearance was as a trio. At first sight more sober than last time, the American band’s performance quickly reminds us that their mix of indus metal and more electronic tracks has lost none of its energy and desire to plunge us into a highly electrifying atmosphere. Actually Huizenga is as bewitching as ever, captivating the audience with her unforgettable performance and captivating looks. There’s a real sense of osmosis between the duo, and the audience don’t hesitate to move to the rhythms of the band’s tracks. The more the set progresses, the more the animal and sexual energy that emanates from the performance increases in power, reaching its climax when the singer ends up on her knees on stage half-dressed to perform one of the most powerful compositions of this beautiful evening. The audience felt the urgency, the anger and the fighting that emanated from the songs, and gave the band a big round of applause, giving their all to end the evening on a high. The band’s percussionist put in a fine performance, standing up throughout the set and putting all his energy into every stroke of his drum. The band took over La Malterie this evening, leaving us once again with the conviction that we’ve seen a unique band that’s like nothing else we’ve ever heard! We left the venue delighted to have found them and ready to do it all over again very soon.
This new Vague de Froid made in Cerbère Coryphée has once again lived up to its promise, with three unique propositions that leave us happy to see the vitality of this underground scene we love so much. We encourage you to keep a close eye on the programme, because it wouldn’t be surprising to see these evenings coming up again very soon, with new, welcomingly cold line-ups.
