Première surprise dès le premier son, “Lethargy”. On ouvre directement l’album avec un son d’une strat très claquante qui a des airs de The Kooks. On sent que le son du groupe est déjà bien travaillé, la basse apporte un bon groove qui est sublimé par la fuzz omniprésente de la guitare. On comprend aussi de suite que le type est calibré pour l’été, l’ode à la paresse dont on retrouvera les codes dans le clip du groupe.
S’ensuit “The Sun” , mon petit coup de cœur de l’album avec pour thème une sorte de dialogue entre la drogue et la dépendance où cette dernière viendra narguer l’écouteur jusqu’à la dernière seconde. Comme énoncé précédemment, on reste sur la thématique relationnelle. Revenue d’un concert de The Smile, la chanson “Two of a Kind” avait vu ses bribes démarrées par Adrian, on sent énormément l’inspiration et l’ambiance générale avec toutes les reverbs, delays et l’effet mur de son qu’on peut retrouver sur les projets de Tom Yorke. On appréciera les petites envolées falsetto qui s’efface pour la guitare en reverb. “Bigger than myself “, une belle balade qui marque une belle pause au milieu de cet album avec une deuxième partie qui lâche toute la tourmente de la première partie. On le répètera encore mais les envolées falsetto de Noah rendent extrêmement bien au sein de cette chanson qu’on en devient compatissant et on ne demande qu’à ce qu’il nous partage sa peine.
De retour à la fuzz bien lourde avec “Strangers”, cette guitare envoûtante nous mène tout doucement vers la fin de ce beau voyage qu’est cet album. On a vraiment l’impression d’assister au déroulé d’une relation amicale ou amoureuse qui mène à une rupture et l’acceptation de cette rancœur. Au-delà des textes qui donnent cette impression il a aussi les rythmes, les effets et instruments utilisés qui descendent en intensité au fur et à mesure de l’album. De strat dansante au début en passant par un son très mélancolique sur “I Will Be Better The Next Time I See You” pour finir par “I miss the Ocean” à la guitare acoustique.
Un premier album prometteur pour le groupe germano-mexicain qu’est BLŪMĒ dont l’esthétique se reflète déjà dans le son mais aussi dans la qualité et D.A des clips déjà disponibles. On attend avec impatience les premières dates européennes pour voir le groupe prendre vie en live.

First surprise from the very first sound, “Lethargy”. The album opens directly with a slamming strat sound reminiscent of The Kooks. You can feel that the band’s sound is already well worked out, with the bass providing a good groove that’s sublimated by the guitar’s omnipresent fuzz. It’s also immediately clear that this is a song made for summer, an ode to laziness whose codes we’ll find again in the band’s video.
This is followed by “The Sun”, my personal favorite of the album, whose theme is a sort of dialogue between drugs and addiction, with the latter taunting the listener right up to the last second. As previously stated, the theme remains one of relationships. Coming back from a concert by The Smile, the song “Two of a Kind” had its snippets started by Adrian, and you can feel the inspiration and general ambience with all the reverbs, delays and wall-of-sound effect that can be found on Tom Yorke‘s projects. You’ll appreciate the little falsetto flights that fade in for the reverb guitar. “Bigger than myself”, a beautiful ballad that marks a nice break in the middle of this album with a second part that lets go of all the torment of the first part. We’ll say it again, but Noah‘s falsetto soars are so well rendered in this song that we feel for him, and can’t wait for him to share his pain with us.
Back to heavy fuzz with “Strangers”, this haunting guitar gently leads us towards the end of this beautiful journey. You really get the impression of witnessing the unfolding of a friendship or love affair leading to a break-up and the acceptance of this resentment. Beyond the lyrics that give this impression, there are also the rhythms, effects and instruments used, which gradually decrease in intensity as the album progresses. From a danceable strat at the start to a very melancholy sound on “I Will Be Better The Next Time I See You”, ending with the acoustic guitar-driven “I miss the Ocean”.
A promising first album for the German-Mexican band BLŪMĒ, whose aesthetic is already reflected not only in the sound but also in the quality and artistic direction of the clips already available. We can’t wait for the first European dates to see the band come to life live.
