Retour au Grand Mix ce mercredi 24 avril pour une soirée que nous ne pouvions pas manquer! Les américain.ne.s de A Place To Bury Strangers sont de passage au club de la salle tourquennoise pour nous faire vivre en live leur noise rock surpuissant. Le groupe est venu accompagné de la formation allemande Plattenbau que beaucoup découvrent ce soir.
>Le trio allemand Plattenbau débarque sur la scène et commence à nous présenter sa musique froide entre post punk et influences cold. Lewis Lloyd est très expressif d’entrée de jeu et se déplace beaucoup sur scène, entre moment accroupis devant le clavier et chant hypnotique face au public. Dans les deux cas, on est emporté par la performance et on ne met que quelques minutes à plonger tête la première dans le set du trio. Dès le deuxième titre, Jesper Munk passera de la guitare au mini clavier au centre de la scène et s’occupera également des chœurs grâce a un micro modulant sa voix. Les changements d’instruments se multiplieront sur scène et on le verra rapidement retrouver sa guitare au morceau suivant. A la basse, Sally Brown est impériale tout au long du set et nous livre une performance a la fois énergique et hypnotique à souhait. Elle n’hésitera pas a faire un petit tour dans la fosse du club du Grand Mix, suivie un peu plus tard par Lewis. On retiendra aussi une complicité très forte entre les musiciens qui n’ont de cesse de partager des regards appuyés ce qui ne fait que renforcer notre plongée dans ces titres tous plus réussis les uns que les autres. Après un petit regard en bord de scène on comprend que la fin approche et le dernier titre terminera de nous mettre des étoiles dans les yeux avec encore une fois une composition très réussie et entêtante qui dévoile une dernière fois le grand talent du trio allemand. C’est très largement applaudis et visiblement ravis par l’accueil qu’ils quittent la scène. On a pris une véritable claque et on espère voir le trio revenir très vite dans le coin pour une date en tête d’affiche! On vous encourage vivement à aller les découvrir !
Il est temps d’accueillir le second trio de la soirée, A Place To Bury Strangers. Autant dire que dans le club, la foule est compacte et que beaucoup attendent ce concert de pied ferme. La lumière s’éteint et « Disgust » démarre, dévoilant les visuel scénique du trio, à savoir des images projetées en fond de scène et une avalanche de stroboscopes et de lumières hypnotiques. Les américain.ne.s ne sont pas venu.e.s pour nous ménager. Le son est très fort mais nous laisse quand même déceler les performances magistrales de Oliver Ackermann (guitare et chant), Sandra Fedowitz (batterie) et John Fedowitz (basse). Sur « Never Coming Back », un tambour rejoindra le devant de la scène pour une performance toujours plus prenante d’Oliver avec en joli bonus une sphère lumineuse s’activant et transformant la salle en véritable boîte de nuit noisy. Le son fort et les lumières souvent très fortes nous obligent à nous éloigner un peu pour reposer nos tympans et nos yeux un petit peu. Mais on ne manquera rien de ce set pour autant. Le trio met en avant Exploding Head, album culte sorti en 2009 avec pas moins de 4 titres joués ce soir au grand plaisir des fans présents. Après l’hypnotisant « In Your Heart », le trio se lance dans « Ocean » morceau tiré de leur premier album. Puis ils proposent un petit set plus électro au milieu de la fosse, au plus près du public, avant de remonter sur scène pour la merveille sonore qu’est « End Of Night ». On dirait toujours qu’il y a beaucoup plus que trois personnes sur scène, signe supplémentaire s’il me fallait de la puissance qui se dégage de la performance du trio américain. « Keep Sleeping Away » nous annonce que la fin est déjà proche mais il reste encore deux titres pour prendre en pleine face une dernière fois ce noise rock magistral. Le trio terminera sur « Have You Ever Been In Love? », titre auquel on répond oui sans hésiter tant on aime visiter cet univers sonore si puissant depuis des années.
Les applaudissements resonnent longtemps dans le Grand Mix puis les fans partent retrouver le stand de merch où le groupe a eu la bonne idée de ramener l’intégralité de sa discographie pour ceux qui n’auraient pas encore tout en leur possession.
On ne pouvait rever meilleure rencontre live avec A Place To Bury Strangers! Malgré un son un tout petit peu trop fort, on a pu pleinement profiter des compositions inoubliables du trio et on quitte la salle ravis d’avoir fait le déplacement pour voir enfin ce groupe mythique sur scène. Une belle soirée qui ne fait que confirmer les excellents choisnde programmation de la salle Touquennoise. Un grand merci à Vincent pour les accréditations et au Grand Mix pour l’organisation de cette belle soirée et pour l’accueil toujours excellent !
Back at Le Grand Mix tonight for an evening we just couldn’t miss! A Place To Bury Strangers from the U.S.A. are back at the club in Tourcoing to bring us their overpowering noise rock live. The band is accompanied by German outfit Plattenbau, who many will be discovering tonight.

The German trio Plattenbau take to the stage and begin to introduce us to their cold music, a cross between post-punk and cold influences. Lewis Lloyd is very expressive from the outset and moves around the stage a lot, between crouching in front of the keyboard and hypnotic singing in front of the audience. In both cases, you’re carried away by the performance, and it only takes a few minutes to dive headfirst into the trio’s set. From the second track onwards, Jesper Munk switches from guitar to mini-keyboard in the center of the stage, and also takes over backing vocals thanks to a microphone modulating his voice. The changes of instruments are multiplied on stage, and we soon see him back on guitar for the next track. On bass, Sally Brown is imperial throughout the set, delivering an energetic and hypnotic performance. She didn’t hesitate to take a turn in the pit of Le Grand Mix club, followed a little later by Lewis. There’s also a strong sense of complicity between the musicians, who are constantly sharing glances, which only reinforces our immersion in these tracks, each one more successful than the last. After a quick glance at the edge of the stage, we realize that the end is nigh, and the last track puts the stars in our eyes, with yet another highly successful, heady composition that reveals the great talent of the German trio one last time. The trio left the stage to rapturous applause and a visibly delighted reception. It was a real slap in the face, and we hope to see the trio back in the area very soon for a headlining date! It’s time to welcome the second trio of the evening, A Place To Bury Strangers. The crowd in the club is packed, and many are eagerly awaiting this concert. The lights go down and “Disgust” kicks in, revealing the trio’s stage visuals: projected images in the background and an avalanche of strobes and hypnotic lights. The Americans have not come to spare us. The sound is very loud, but we can still hear the masterful performances of Oliver Ackermann (guitar and vocals), Sandra Fedowitz (drums) and John Fedowitz (bass). On “Never Coming Back”, a drum joins the front of the stage for an even more captivating performance from Oliver, with the added bonus of a luminous sphere activating and transforming the room into a veritable noisy nightclub. The loud sound and often very bright lights force us to move away to rest our eardrums and eyes a little. But we’re not going to miss any of the set. The trio showcases Exploding Head, their cult album released in 2009, with no less than 4 tracks played tonight, much to the delight of the fans in attendance. After the hypnotic “In Your Heart”, the trio launch into “Ocean”, a track taken from their debut album. Then they perform a more electro set in the middle of the pit, close to the audience, before returning to the stage for the sonic marvel that is “End Of Night”. It still feels like there are a lot more than three people on stage, another sign if ever I needed one of the power that emanates from the American trio’s performance. “Keep Sleeping Away” announces that the end is already near, but there are still two tracks left to take in this masterful noise rock one last time. The trio ends with “Have You Ever Been In Love?”, a track to which we answer yes without hesitation, so much so that we’ve enjoyed visiting this powerful universe of sound for years.
The applause resounds for a long time in Le Grand Mix, before the fans head off to the merch stand, where the band have had the good idea of bringing back their entire discography for those who haven’t got it all yet.
We couldn’t have dreamed of a better live encounter with A Place To Bury Strangers! Despite the sound being a little too loud, we were able to take full advantage of the trio’s unforgettable compositions, and we left the venue delighted to have made the trip to finally see this legendary band live on stage. A wonderful evening which only confirms the Touquennoise venue’s excellent programming choices.
