Le JUNO Award de l’album Hard de l’année, album de l’année chez Loudwire, numéro 1 des charts américains.. Avec un beau palmarès comme ça, les américains de Unleash The Archers ont conquis la scène métal mondiale en 2020 avec leur album Abyss. Ce 10 mai, ils sont de retour avec Phantoma, sixième album autour de l’intelligence artificielle, sorti via Napalm Records.

Nous voilà plongé dans un univers où la race humaine a été décimé et seules les machines font signe d’existence. Les claviers et samples électroniques sont prédominants et s’associent aux riffs de guitares pour une sorte de bataille de data qui volent dans les airs. « Ph4/NT0-mA » est sublime de puissance et d’inventivité. Brittney Slayes défit de sa voix tout l’électronique qui l’entoure. Alors quand on parle d’album sur l’IA, on se doit de se demander si elle a été utilisé pour l’écriture de cet album. La réponse est oui. De premier abord, on a du mal à juger de l’authenticité de la musique, mais le travail des musiciens pour non pas laisser les machines faire tout le boulot est colossal. Utilisé comme un élément à part entière dans la composition, on sait distinguer la musicalité du groupe.

« Buried In Code' » nous plonge dans un métal beaucoup plus progressif pour l’écriture d’un nouveau monde. C’est le type de morceau efficace, qui plaira aux afficionado de hard rock. Un nouveau monde, une nouvelle terre habitable. L’histoire se répète encore et encore ? « The Collective » nous fait apparaitre les premières armées avec un power métal bande son d’un chant de guerre, avec ce chant growlé. Quasiment bestial, on ressent toute la puissance coloniale qui se dresse devant nous. Très vite, c’est la beauté du monde qui prendra le dessus. ‘Green & Glass » est un morceau lumineux qui se réjouit de la beauté du monde. Avec un chœur vocal d’une douceur folle, et des riffs très pop, le morceau respire la voix de vivre. Un nouveau monde n’est donc pas que dominé par la terreur et l’emprise des machines.

Sur fond de critique humaine et environnementale, « Gods In Decay » ne peut que nous rappeler nos erreurs face à notre monde. Andrews et Grant à la guitare s’éclatent et nous offrent l’un des plus beaux moments de l’album avec ce long solo. L’introduction guitare piano de « Ghosts In The Mist » nous plonge directement dans un univers inquiétant et nous rappelle les sonorités propres aux BO de films d’horreurs. Ca tombe bien, le sang et les fantômes seront au cœur du sujet. On est totalement fans des moments de growls. C’est finalement avec une voix électronique que notre IA a toute sa conscience, ne s’identifiant ni humain, ni robot, ni machine. Une nouvelle forme de vie qui ne souhaite même plus vivre sur « Blood Empress ». Proche d’une nouvelle apocalypse, la rythmique est plus profonde et beaucoup plus mélodique. Une fin pleine d’émotions.

Unleast The Archers nous proposent avec Phantoma encore un très bon album, qui va pleinement dans son concept. Entre composition, parole, clip et univers IA, tout y est pour une vraie proposition artistique d’une grande qualité. On est totalement convaincu par cet album reprenant des élements du hard rock, du power métal, du prog et même de la pop électro. Nous avons hâte de les voir passer en France !

This May 10, they are back with Phantoma, their sixth album about artificial intelligence, released via Napalm Records.

We’re plunged into a universe where the human race has been decimated, and only machines show signs of existence. Keyboards and electronic samples predominate, joining guitar riffs in a kind of data battle that flies through the air. « Ph4/NT0-mA » is sublime in its power and inventiveness. Brittney Slayes‘ voice defies all the electronics that surround her. So when we talk about an album about AI, we have to ask ourselves whether it was used in the writing of this album. The answer is yes. At first glance, it’s hard to judge the authenticity of the music, but the musicians’ efforts to avoid letting the machines do all the work are colossal. Used as an integral part of the composition, it’s easy to distinguish the band’s musicality.

« Buried In Code » plunges us into a much more progressive metal style of writing for a new world. It’s the kind of effective track that will appeal to hard rock afficionados. A new world, a new habitable land. History repeats itself again and again? « The Collective » introduces the first armies with a power metal soundtrack to a war song, with growled vocals. Almost bestial, we feel all the colonial power standing before us. Soon enough, it’s the beauty of the world that takes over. Green & Glass » is a luminous track that rejoices in the beauty of the world. With an insanely sweet vocal chorus, and very pop riffs, the track breathes the voice of living. A new world is not just dominated by terror and the grip of machines.

Set against a backdrop of human and environmental criticism, « Gods In Decay » can only remind us of the errors of our ways in the face of our world. Andrews and Grant on guitar have a blast, and offer one of the album’s finest moments with this long solo. The piano-guitar intro to « Ghosts In The Mist » plunges us straight into an eerie world, reminiscent of the sounds of horror movie soundtracks. Blood and ghosts will be at the heart of the subject. We’re huge fans of the growls. It’s finally with an electronic voice that our AI is fully conscious, identifying itself as neither human, robot nor machine. A new form of life that no longer even wishes to live on « Blood Empress ». Close to a new apocalypse, the rhythm is deeper and much more melodic. An emotional ending.

With Phantoma, Unleast The Archers delivers another excellent album, fully in keeping with its concept. Between composition, lyrics, clip and AI universe, everything is there for a real artistic proposal of great quality. We’re totally convinced by this album, which incorporates elements of hard rock, power metal, prog and even electro pop. We can’t wait to see them in France!
