La date à ne pas manquer ce mois-ci se déroulait à The Black Lab en ce mercredi 15 mai. Les canadiens de Cancer Bats sont de retour dans la salle de Wasquehal un peu moins d’un an après leur passage inoubliable en ouverture de Sick Of It All, mais cette fois-ci en tête d’affiche! Pour les accompagner, nous sommes surpris de retrouver Bongzilla, eux aussi habitués des lieux. En effet les styles des groupes sont bien différents mais regorgent tout deux de riffs surpuissants. On se rend donc dans une de nos salles favorites avec la belle promesse d’une nouvelle très belle soirée made in Cerbère Coryphée.

La soirée commence donc avec Bongzilla qui montent sur scène devant un public déjà assez nombreux. Les américains commencent fort avec leur stoner sludge des plus puissants. La lumière verte colle parfaitement au thème principal de leurs morceaux : le cannabis! Mike Makela balance ses lignes de basses les plus lourdes qui soient tout en hurlant dans son micro, qu’on a l’impression qu’il mange littéralement. Les têtes commencent à remuer signe que la sauce prend complètement. A la guitare Jeff Schultz n’est pas en reste et livre tout au long du set des riffs d’une puissance folle qui résonnent fort entre les murs de la salle de Wasquehal. Le trio ne serait rien sans les rythmiques souvent lentes mais très souvent dévastatrices de Mike Henry qui ne laisse rien au hasard derrière ses futs. On passe un superbe moment en compagnie du groupe du Wisconsin et les morceaux comme l’excellent « Dab City » feront clairement beaucoup d’heureux dans le public. On aura même le droit à un nouveau morceau qui annonce de belles choses à venir avec toujours cette envie de nous embrumer l’esprit avec une musique qui ne perd pas en puissance, bien au contraire, avec les années. Le public profite de chaque instant en compagnie du trio et applaudit largement dès que l’occasion se présente. Après un set mené de mains de maîtres les trois américains nous annoncent déjà la fin de partie mais nous laissent avec un dernier titre des plus réussis qui finira de convaincre tout le monde dans l’assistance. C’est heureux qu’ils quittent la scène après avoir remercié toutes les équipes pour l’accueil ainsi que le public pour son soutien sans faille. Bongzilla ont été fidèles à leur réputation et on part profiter de la chaleur de cette douce soirée printanière avant de retrouver nos amis canadiens.

Après plus de dix ans à suivre les pérégrinations musicales des canadiens de Cancer Bats, les retrouver en tête d’affiche de The Black Lab est un plaisir qu’on ne pouvait clairement pas manquer. La lumière s’éteint et les musiciens entre sur scène très vite suivis de Liam Cormier qui se met dès les premières secondes du set à sauter dans tous les sens. Le groupe de Toronto nous livre son hardcore punk avec toute l’énergie qui les a toujours caractérisé. Impossible de rester de marbre devant un tel déferlement de hits, c’est simple les canadiens nous livrent ce qui s’apparente à un réel best of de leur discographie. Le public n’en demandait pas tant et se lance des des pogos qui ne cesseront pas de tout le set. Entre les titres Liam s’exprime en français, comme à son habitude, et nous remercie d’être venus si nombreux ce soir. On sent que tout le groupe est ravi par l’accueil et que la chaleur qu’on ressent dans la salle ne fait que leur donner toujours plus envie de tout retourner sur leur passage. Mike Peters (batterie) et Jaye R. Schwarzer (basse) forment un duo rythmique imparable et rendent petit à petit nos cervicales très douloureuses avec leur enchainement ininterrompu de titres calibrés pour nous faire bouger la tête. Jackson Landry nous lance tous les meilleurs riffs du groupe tout au long du set avec là aussi une envie certaine de courir dans tous les sens et de faire le show. Le groupe nous proposera là aussi un nouveau titre, signe qu’une nouvelle sortie devrait pointer le bout de son nez dans quelques temps. La soirée ne faiblira jamais en intensité et lorsque Liam annonce les trois derniers titres du set on se dit qu’on a clairement pas vu le temps passer en leur compagnie. Trois titres pour les gouverner tous! Trois titres pour tout donner une dernière fois, et c’est exactement ce que le groupe et le public feront avant une fin en apothéose qui laissera tout le monde sur les rotules. Le groupe remercie le public pour son énergie et son soutien sans failles puis toute l’équipe de la salle pour l’accueil qui leur a été réservé. On quitte la salle conquis une fois de plus par le show proposé par Cancer Bats et on ne manquera sans aucun doute leur prochain passage dans la région. Et si c’était au Rock In Bourlon 2025? On l’espère de tout cœur!

The date not to be missed this month was at The Black Lab on May 15th. Canadian band Cancer Bats are back at the Wasquehal venue, just under a year after their unforgettable performance opening for Sick Of It All, but this time as headliners! To accompany them, we were surprised to find Bongzilla, also regulars at the venue. The bands’ styles are very different, but they’re both packed with overpowering riffs. So we’re off to one of our favourite venues with the promise of another great evening made in Cerbère Coryphée.

The evening kicks off with Bongzilla taking to the stage in front of an already packed audience. The Americans get things off to a flying start with their powerful stoner sludge. The green light fits perfectly with the main theme of their songs: cannabis! Mike Makela throws down some of the heaviest bass lines you’ll ever hear, screaming into a microphone that looks like it’s literally eating him. Heads start to shake, a sign that the sauce is really taking. Guitarist Jeff Schultz is not to be outdone, delivering riffs of insane power throughout the set that resonate loudly within the walls of the Wasquehal venue. The trio would be nothing without the often slow but often devastating rhythms of Mike Henry, who leaves nothing to chance behind his drums. We had a superb time in the company of the Wisconsin band, and tracks like the excellent ‘Dab City’ were clearly a hit with the audience. We’re even treated to a new track that heralds great things to come, with the same desire to cloud our minds with music that doesn’t lose any of its power – quite the opposite, in fact – as the years go by. The audience made the most of every moment with the trio, applauding loudly at every opportunity. After a masterfully conducted set, the three Americans were already announcing the end of their set, but left us with a final, highly successful track that convinced everyone in the audience. They happily left the stage after thanking all the teams for their warm welcome and the audience for their unfailing support. Bongzilla have lived up to their reputation and we’re off to enjoy the warmth of this mild spring evening before heading back for our Canadian friends show.

After more than ten years of following the musical peregrinations of Canadian band Cancer Bats, to find them headlining The Black Lab was a pleasure we clearly couldn’t miss. The lights go down and the musicians quickly take to the stage, followed by Liam Cormier, who starts jumping up and down within seconds of the set. The Toronto band deliver their hardcore punk with all the energy that has always characterised them. It’s impossible to remain indifferent in the face of such an outpouring of hits, and it’s easy to see why: the Canadians are delivering what amounts to a veritable best of of their discography. The crowd couldn’t have wished for more, and broke into pogos that continued throughout the set. Between songs Liam spoke in French, as usual, and thanked us all for coming in such large numbers this evening. You can tell that the whole band is delighted by the reception and that the warmth in the room only makes them want to turn the place upside down. Mike Peters (drums) and Jaye R. Schwarzer (bass) form an unstoppable rhythmic duo, gradually making our necks ache with their non-stop succession of tracks designed to get our heads bobbing. Jackson Landry throws all the band’s best riffs at us throughout the set, again with a definite desire to run around and put on a show. The band also offered up a new track, a sign that a new release should be on the horizon in the near future. The evening never wavers in intensity, and when Liam announces the last three tracks of the set, it’s clear that we haven’t seen the last of them. Three tracks to rule them all! Three tracks to give it their all one last time, and that’s exactly what the band and the audience do before a climactic finish that leaves everyone on their knees. The band thanked the audience for their energy and unfailing support, and then the entire venue team for the warm welcome they had received. We left the venue once again won over by the show put on by Cancer Bats, and there’s no doubt we won’t be missing their next visit to the region. How about Rock In Bourlon 2025? We hope so!
