Depuis leur premier album en 2017 et jusqu’à Curse Of Autumn sorti en 2021, les américains de Witherfall se sont forgé une place de choix sur la dark melodic mondiale. Cette année le groupe nous propose de découvrir son quatrième album, Sounds Of The Forgotten, qui sera disponible dès le 31 mai via DeathWave Records. On part donc retrouver avec joie les américains pour ces dix nouveaux titres.

L’album commence très fort avec « They Will Let You Down » avec des riffs surpuissants qui montrent que le groupe n’a clairement rien perdu de sa superbe. On est toujours à cheval entre un univers sombre évident et une envie forte de proposer des titres des plus énergiques. Joseph Michael est en très grande forme vocale et arrive en quelques minutes à nous donner toute l’étendue de son talent. Ce qui est impressionnant tout au long de l’écoute c’est que les différentes guitares que l’on entend sont toutes de la main de Jake Dreyer, et sa versatilité est clairement un point fort de la musique du groupe. Les claviers de Gerry Hirschfeld renforcent eux aussi l’immersion dans les compositions et ce côté théâtral qu’on aime tant retrouver. Les mélodies de « Where Do I Begin » ou « Insidious » frappent par leur beauté et leur capacité à nous émouvoir. Tout au long de l’album des interludes nous offrent des temps de répit et de contemplation bienvenue entre des pièces variées et toutes plus puissantes les unes que les autres. Impossible de ne pas pas headbanger dans son salon au son des rythmiques des plus réussies de Anthony Crawford à la basse et Marco Minnemann à la batterie, les deux musiciens gardent toujours cette approche quasi prog qui fait la force de la formation. Une chose ressort de l’écoute de l’album, c’est le côté très émancipateur qui s’en dégage, et cela semble évident quand on sait que cet album est né de la frustration de l’impossibilité de tourner suite à la sortie du précédent pendant la pandémie. Le morceau titre est clairement une pièce maîtresse de cette nouvelle sortie des américains mais « When It All Falls Away » vient nous émouvoir une fois de plus avant une fin en apothéose sur « What Have You Done » où chaque musicien nous livre une dernière prestation magistrale.
Sounds Of The Forgotten confirme que Witherfall ont toujours de superbes compositions à proposer. Leur musique navigue entre les genres avec brio tout en gardant une unité folle de bout en bout. Impossible de ne pas être bluffé par la maestria qui se dégage de chaque instant de ce nouveau disque des américains. Une très belle réussite qui va clairement tourner en boucle, et qui livrera sans aucun doute de nouveaux secrets à chaque écoute.

From their debut album in 2017 to Curse Of Autumn, released in 2021, American band Witherfall have carved out a place for themselves on the global dark melodic scene. This year, the band invites us to discover their fourth album, Sounds Of The Forgotten, which will be available from 31 May via DeathWave Records. We’re delighted to be reunited with the Americans for these ten new tracks.
The album kicks off with a bang with ‘They Will Let You Down’, featuring overpowering riffs that show the band have clearly lost none of their superb sound. We’re still straddling the line between an obvious dark universe and a strong desire to offer the most energetic tracks. Joseph Michael is in great vocal form, and in just a few minutes he manages to show us the full extent of his talent. What’s impressive throughout is that the various guitars we hear are all by the hand of Jake Dreyer, and his versatility is clearly a strong point of the band’s music. Gerry Hirschfeld‘s keyboards also add to the immersion in the compositions and the theatrical feel we’re so fond of. The melodies of ‘Where Do I Begin’ and ‘Insidious’ are striking in their beauty and their ability to move us. Throughout the album, interludes offer welcome respite and contemplation between varied tracks, each more powerful than the last. It’s impossible not to headbang in your living room to the sound of Anthony Crawford on bass and Marco Minnemann on drums, the two musicians maintaining the almost prog approach that is the band’s strength. One thing that stands out from listening to the album is its emancipatory quality, which seems obvious when you consider that this album was born of the frustration of not being able to tour following the release of their previous album during the pandemic. The title track is clearly the centrepiece of this new release from the Americans, but ‘When It All Falls Away’ moves us once again before a climactic finish on ‘What Have You Done’, where each musician delivers a masterful final performance.
Sounds Of The Forgotten confirms that Witherfall still have some superb compositions to offer. Their music navigates brilliantly between genres, while maintaining an insane unity from start to finish. It’s impossible not to be blown away by the mastery that emanates from every moment of this new album by the Americans. It’s a great success that’s clearly going to be played over and over again, and will undoubtedly reveal new secrets with every listen.
