Malgré un été qui se fait attendre, la chaleur dans la salle est bien présente. Pourtant la foule extérieure est rentrée bien en avance pour être sûre de ne rater aucune miette de Descendents. On entend beaucoup dans la fosse “Ce groupe a bercé mon adolescence”, “C’est immanquable”… Au vu du peu de dates en France, on n’est pas vraiment étonné d’entendre parler flamand ou de voir que quelques parisiens ou amiénois ont fait le déplacement sur Lille. Avant même de démarrer, les désormais sexagénaires nous font part de leurs connaissances en français, plutôt légères et assumées! “Hope”, tube emblématique datant de 1982, est joué en deuxième dans la setlist, ce qui déchaîne le pogo instantanément. Les premiers slams ne se font pas attendre, et pendant “Silly Girl”, Milo Aukerman (chant) se fait même arracher son micro par un fan lors d’une réception peu maîtrisée. Les titres s’enchaînent, et certains tubes comme “Everything Sux” sont scandés jusqu’au fond de la salle. Le public danse, saute, exulte, et durant un temps le punk californien de Descendents nous fait oublier le bruit des bottes bien présent dehors. On alterne entre titres très festifs et récents comme “Nightage” et des vieux morceaux emblématiques comme “Myage”, n’oubliant pas l’époque intermédiaire avec des morceaux comme “‘Merican”. Fidèle au genre, les compositions de Descendents sont courtes, à l’instar de “I Wanna Be a Bear” qui dure moins d’une minute. “Van” est rythmiquement très différent des autres titres et vient nous interpeller, ne diminuant en rien l’énergie du public. Dans le même esprit de diversité, “Without Love” est plus mélodique, tout en gardant un axe bien punk rock. Pendant “I Don’t Want To Grow Up”, qui date de 1987, époque où les protagonistes étaient forcément plus jeunes, on ne peut que se faire la réflexion qu’ils ont effectivement vieilli mais n’ont rien perdu de leur fougue de jeunesse. Le set touche doucement à sa fin, mais le public, comme le groupe, ne perdent pas leur énergie et vont nous le prouver pendant “Suburban Home”. Descendents quitte la scène après “Smile”, se terminant sur un chant collégial. Ils sont évidemment vivement rappelé et vont venir terminer ce show avec quelques titres. On se dira au revoir avec “Get The Time”. Au total, Descendents nous aura interprété pas moins de 33 titres en un peu moins d’une heure et quart.

Après un moment comme celui-là, on ne peut que vous dire qu’on ne regrette pas notre soirée! Descendents a comblé toutes nos espérances et même au-delà. Après des décennies de carrière, ils n’ont rien perdu de leur énergie et de leur talent. Et preuve, s’il en fallait encore, du nombre de groupes qu’ils ont influencé, on a croisé à ce concert énormément d’artistes de formations plus ou moins locales, issues de la scène punk rock. Bref, on repart conquis par cette soirée de punk rock, ayant perdu quelques années au compteur après ce retour à l’adolescence. Longue vie à Descendents!

The Black Lab always puts on an amazing line-up, and this Thursday June 13th was no exception! It’s no less than punk rock legends Descendents! The Parisian band Hogwash kick off the evening in the same musical vein. Of course, this is a big date for all punk rockers, many of whom have been listening to Descendents since their teens, and The Black Lab is almost sold out for this exceptional evening.

The Black Lab is gradually filling up on this June evening when, for once, the weather is cooperating. A bar was set up outside for the occasion, in anticipation of the large crowds expected. It was the first notes of Hogwash that drew the audience in. It’s easy to get carried away by the Parisians’ punk rock, which fits in perfectly with the evening’s theme. The vocals are shared by Florian (guitar), Rafik (guitar) and Victor (bass). This gives the compositions a lively rhythm. The band don’t hesitate to make jokes between songs, not taking themselves too seriously, in the spirit of punk rock. They even take the liberty of starting again after a botched intro due to poor tuning. You soon realise that while they have a knack for making a mockery of everything, it’s still musically very festive, feel good and controlled. The frenetic drum beats get a few people in the front row moving. The whole thing sounds very old school, making it a fitting opening act for Descendents. And if the whole thing seems repetitive at times, punk rock not being the style in which you’re looking for a lot of originality, some tracks like « Donna » clearly stand out from the crowd and stick in your head after the concert. After this pleasant appetiser, the Black Lab was ready to welcome the legendary Descendents.

Despite the long-awaited arrival of summer, the heat in the venue was still very much in evidence. But the crowd outside had come in well in advance to make sure they didn’t miss a single minute of Descendents. A lot of people in the pit are saying « This band rocked my teenage years », « This is a must-see »… Given the lack of dates in France, it’s not really surprising to hear Flemish being spoken or to see that a few Parisians and people from Amiens have made the trip to Lille. Even before the show got underway, the now sixty-somethings shared their knowledge of French with us, in a rather light-hearted and self-assured way! « Hope », an iconic hit dating back to 1982, is played second in the setlist, instantly setting off the pogo. The first slams were not long in coming, and during « Silly Girl », Milo Aukerman (vocals) even had his microphone ripped off by a fan during an uncontrolled reception. One song followed another, and some hits like « Everything Sux » were chanted from the back of the room. The crowd danced, jumped and cheered, and for a while the Californian punk of Descendents made us forget the sound of the boots outside. They alternate between very festive, recent tracks like « Nightage » and old, emblematic songs like « Myage », not forgetting the intervening period with tracks like « Merican ». True to the genre, Descendents‘ compositions are short, like « I Wanna Be a Bear » which lasts less than a minute. « Van » is rhythmically very different from the other tracks and comes to challenge us, in no way diminishing the energy of the audience. In the same spirit of diversity, « Without Love » is more melodic, while retaining a punk rock feel. During « I Don’t Want To Grow Up », which dates back to 1987, when the band were necessarily younger, you can’t help but think that they have indeed aged, but have lost none of their youthful ardour. The set was slowly drawing to a close, but the audience, like the band, had not lost their energy, as they proved during ‘Suburban Home’. Descendents left the stage after « Smile », which ended with the crowd singing along. Of course, they were eagerly recalled and came to finish the show with a few songs. We say goodbye with « Get The Time ». In all, Descendents will have played no less than 33 tracks in just under an hour and a quarter.

After a moment like that, we can only say that we don’t regret our evening! Descendents fulfilled all our expectations and then some. After decades in the business, they’ve lost none of their energy or talent. And as further proof, if any were needed, of the number of bands they’ve influenced, we bumped into a huge number of artists from more or less local bands from the punk rock scene. In short, we came away conquered by this evening of punk rock, having lost a few years on the counter after this return to adolescence. Long live Descendents!
