Il y a six ans déjà sortait Proper Dose de The Story So Far, faisant une entrée fracassante dans la liste des albums qu’on a envie de se repasser en boucle. Entre temps, Kevin Geyer (guitare et chant) nous a proposé un sublime album avec son projet solo Same Side, qui nous a clairement enchanté. En cette semaine de début d’été il est temps de retrouver les californiens avec leur 5ème album studio. Intitulé I Want To Disappear, il sera disponible le 21 juin via Pure Noise Records.

Dès le premier titre on retrouve tout le talent des californiens pour un pop punk des plus réussis. Parker Cannon et sa voix reconnaissable se mêle parfaitement à celle de Kevin qui le rejoint dans les chœurs. Les guitares nous donnent tout ce qu’on attend avec des riffs calibrés pour une fête totale dans une fosse de concert. La suite poursuit sur cette vibe avec un titre rapide qui nous donne une fois encore des paroles qui restent en tête dès la première écoute. La batterie de Ryan Torf vous fera remuer dans votre salon avec des rythmiques dansantes et mélodiques à souhait tout au long de l’album. Six ans ont passé mais le groupe n’a clairement rien perdu de son talent de composition. Evidemment Kevin Geyer et William Levy proposent des parties de guitares absolument mémorables qui donnent une idée bien précise de la puissance de leur duo. La première partie de cet album ne laisse aucune chance de se poser pour notre plus grand plaisir et ça n’est pas près de s’arrêter si on en croit « Nothing To Say » qui démarre la seconde moitié de cet album qu’on note déjà dans ce qu’on a entendu de plus entrainant cette année. Avec « White Shores » on arrive au petit moment calme de l’album avec un titre tout aussi réussi porté par des guitares plus plus douces et un ensemble vocal des plus émouvants, avec une fin qui repart dans l’énergie avant le morceau final. Celui-ci nous laisse avec une un retour à l’émotion brute avec un deuxième titre sublimé par les guitares acoustiques et les deux voix une fois encore mêlées pour nous tirer les larmes.
I Want To Disappear est une réussite totale pour The Story So Far qui nous donnent en dix titres leur tout meilleur. Véritable usine à tubes dansants sur quasi l’intégralité de l’écoute on se plait à retrouver leurs émouvantes compositions plus en retenues en fin d’album. Les californiens ont frappé fort avec cette nouvelle sortie, et nous confirment que leur nom s’affiche au plus haut de la scène pop punk actuelle. On part se repasser l’album en boucle avant les dates européennes du mois de Novembre qu’on attend déjà impatiemment.

It’s already been six years since Proper Dose from The Story So Far was released, making a stunning entry on the list of albums we want to play over and over again. In the meantime, Kevin Geyer (guitar and vocals) has given us a sublime album with his solo project Same Side, which has clearly enchanted us. In this week of early summer, it’s time to catch up with the Californians with their 5th studio album. Entitled I Want To Disappear, it will be available on June 21st via Pure Noise Records.
From the very first track, the Californians’ talent for pop punk is evident. Parker Cannon‘s recognisable voice blends perfectly with Kevin‘s, who joins him on backing vocals. The guitars give us everything we’ve come to expect, with riffs calibrated for a total party in a concert pit. The rest of the set builds on this vibe with a fast-paced track that once again delivers lyrics that stick in your head from the very first listen. Ryan Torf‘s drums will have you shaking in your living room with danceable, melodic rhythms throughout the album. Six years have gone by but the band have clearly lost none of their songwriting talent. Of course, Kevin Geyer and William Levy offer some absolutely memorable guitar parts that give a clear idea of the power of their duo. The first half of this album leaves no chance of settling down, much to our delight, and there’s no end in sight if « Nothing To Say » is anything to go by, kicking off the second half of an album that’s already one of the catchiest we’ve heard this year. White Shores » brings us to the album’s quiet moment, with an equally successful track driven by softer guitars and a moving vocal ensemble, ending with a burst of energy before the final track. This one leaves us with a return to raw emotion with a second track sublimated by the acoustic guitars and the two voices once again blended together to bring tears to our eyes.
I Want To Disappear is a total success for The Story So Far, who give us their very best in ten tracks. A veritable factory of danceable hits throughout almost the entire album, it’s a pleasure to find their moving compositions more restrained at the end. The Californians have struck hard with this new release, confirming that their name is at the top of today’s pop punk scene. We’re off to play the album over and over again before the European dates in November, which we’re already looking forward to.
