Blast Candy, c’est un gang de riot punk, coloré et engagé. Ils sortent ce 21 juin, jour de fête de la musique, leur deuxième album Future Drone Killer, via Crash Toyz. Un appel donc à passer 10 titres dans l’univers de ce groupe détonnant.

Les sonorités de cet album prennent très rapidement un accent futuriste, et on comprend alors sans difficulté le nom de cet opus. On sent de nombreuses influences s’entremêler dans la musicalité de Blast Candy, entre punk, post punk, rythmes groovy, chant tantôt slamé, tantôt chanté… Mais l’ensemble suinte toujours grandement l’esprit punk! Il faut dire que dans ce groupe on retrouve peu de novices. A la batterie par exemple, Tibo Brandalise a notamment officié avec un certain Iggy Pop… Dans “Bad Girl”, Mira Victoria (chant) nous récite en guise d’introduction, un extrait de La Sorcière de Michelet, texte engagé datant de 1862. Dans le même registre, “Briser le Silence” rend hommage à Audre Lorde, militante poétesse du Black Feminism américain. Passant de l’anglais au français, les textes sont toujours lourds de sens, engagés et particulièrement travaillés. On sent chez Caeteno Malta (guitare), des influences bien différentes du punk, amenant une sonorité très intéressante et originale aux différents morceaux. On y découvre ainsi des titres particulièrement calmes avec “Darkroom”, ou “La fille à Roulettes”. Et même si parfois on peut définir le groupe de perché, ils arrivent toujours à nous faire saisir l’essence de leurs titres, la direction qu’ils lui ont insufflée. La voix de Mira se fait parfois soul, presque à la Amy Winehouse, à l’instar de ce qu’on peut entendre dans “Black Mermaid”. Elle semble pouvoir la moduler presque à l’infini pour nous faire passer toutes sortes de ressentis. On retrouve l’esprit bien revendicatif et militant avec “Violence d’Etat”, s’adressant directement à Manu. Autant dire que ce titre résonne particulièrement en cette période trouble et politiquement abominable qui voit la rue se soulever chaque jour. A la manière des Vulves Assassines, les paroles sont agressives, mais aucun mot n’arrive à égaler la violence de ce qui se passe dans notre société actuellement. Après les violences d’état, on termine cet album par “Victimologie”, traitant des violences policières. Sous forme d’hommage, les noms des victimes de violences policières depuis 1986 sont égrainés un par un. Autant vous dire que le titre est long…
On est vraiment heureux d’être tombé sur cette petite pépite de riot punk. En ces temps vraiment difficiles pour toute personne ayant une conscience un minimum humaniste, cet album engagé et qualitatif fait un bien fou. Blast Candy est un groupe à suivre, qui saura très certainement se faire une place au sein de la scène musicale militante. Allez écouter sans attendre Future Drone Killer!

Blast Candy is a colourful, committed riot punk gang. They’re releasing their second album, Future Drone Killer, via Crash Toyz, on 21 June, music day. It’s an invitation to spend 10 tracks in the world of this explosive band.

The sounds of this album very quickly take on a futuristic accent, and it’s easy to understand the name of this opus. Blast Candy‘s musicality is a blend of many influences, from punk and post-punk to groovy rhythms and vocals that are sometimes slammed, sometimes sung… But the whole thing still oozes punk spirit! It has to be said that there are few novices in this group. On drums, for example, Tibo Brandalise has worked with a certain Iggy Pop… In ‘Bad Girl’, Mira Victoria (vocals) introduces us with an extract from La Sorcière de Michelet, a politically committed text from 1862. In the same vein, « Briser le Silence » pays tribute to Audre Lorde, the militant poet of American Black Feminism. Switching from English to French, the lyrics are always full of meaning, committed and particularly well-crafted. Caeteno Malta (guitar) has influences that are very different from punk, bringing a very interesting and original sound to the different tracks. There are some particularly calm tracks, such as « Darkroom » and « La fille à Roulettes ». And even if the band can sometimes be described as perched, they always manage to get us to grasp the essence of their songs, the direction they’ve taken them in. Mira‘s voice is sometimes soulful, almost Amy Winehouse-like, as in ‘Black Mermaid’. She seems to be able to modulate it almost ad infinitum to convey all kinds of feelings. The militant spirit of the song is echoed in « Violence d’Etat », which is addressed directly to Manu (the French President). It’s a track that’s particularly resonant in these troubled and politically abominable times, when the streets are rising up every day. Like Vulves Assassines, the lyrics are aggressive, but no words can match the violence of what’s happening in our society at the moment. After state violence, the album ends with « Victimologie », about police violence. In the form of a tribute, the names of victims of police violence since 1986 are listed one by one. Suffice to say, it’s a long title…
We’re really pleased to have stumbled across this little nugget of riot punk. In these difficult times for anyone with even a modicum of humanist conscience, this high-quality, committed album is a real treat. Blast Candy are a band to watch, and they’re sure to make their mark on the militant music scene. Don’t wait to listen to Future Drone Killer!
