Après une belle soirée prog la veille, c’est autour du death metal d’avoir les honneurs à The Black Lab avec la venue de The Black Dahlia Murder, Suffocation et Khemmis pour un plateau des plus alléchants. Le public a évidemment répondu à l’appel des gros riffs et c’est déplacé en nombre pour cette date que beaucoup attendaient de pied ferme. C’est curieux d’enfin pourvoir voir ces formations en live que nous nous sommes rendus dans la salle de Wasquehal.

C’est devant un public prêt pour la bagarre que Khemmis débarquent sur scène. Nous étions étonné de voir sur l’affiche de cette soirée l’annonce d’un groupe de doom avant les deux groupes de death, mais après un morceau des américains on se sent clairement plus proches du heavy que du doom. Certes le groupe ajoute clairement des touches de lenteur et de rythmiques doom dans sa musique mais on sent fortement les influences heavy de la formation de Denver. Beaucoup se sentent donc décontenancés mais écoutent le groupe avec attention. Phil Pendergast chante avec force tout en partageant les parties de guitares avec Ben Hutcherson pendant que Zach Coleman (batterie) et David Small (basse) font bouger les premières têtes avec leurs rythmiques bien senties. On découvre de notre côté le groupe ce soir et malheureusement on a clairement du mal à accrocher, même si sur scène les musiciens jouent très bien. On laissera donc après quelques morceaux les devants de la scène pour profiter de la fin du set un peu plus loin dans la salle. Vus les retours à la pause on vous encourage tout de même à découvrir le groupe si ça n’est pas déjà fait!
Le public lillois est fin prêt pour la déferlante Suffocation! Les américains nous viennent avec dans leur besace leur dernière petite pépite qu’est Hymns From The Apocrypha, sortie l’an dernier. Leur mélange brutal et technique de death metal frappe directement en pleine face avec « Seraphim Enslavement ». C’est simple Terrance Hobbs (guitare) et sa bande sont venus pour tout casser, et le public n’en demandait pas temps et se lance d’entrée dans un pit incessant. Le groupe semble trouver l’accueil parfait et n’hésite pas à inciter le public à toujours plus renforcer les circle pits et autres slams. Ricky Myers au chant est dans une forme olympique et se lance dans un « Jesus Wept » absolument imparable. Les riffs de Charlie Errigo et Terrance sont d’une technicité folle et donnent envie foncer dans le pit malgré la chaleur vite suffocante qui commence à monter dans la salle, pendant que les rythmiques de Derrek Boyer à la basse et Eric Morotti à la batterie ne laissent aucune chance à nos cervicales. Le groupe n’oublie pas les classiques avec « Pierced From Within » (1995) qui ravira les fans des premières heures. C’est un set sans temps morts que le groupe propose et chaque seconde qui passe est encore plus musicalement violente que la précédente, et ça n’est pas « Funeral Inception » ou « Breeding The Spawn » qui calmeront le jeu. Le public donne tout pour les américains qui annoncent déjà bientôt la fin du set. Mais il reste deux titres et pas des moindres pour une dernière dose (pour le moment) de pits endiablés. C’est sur l’excellent « Infecting The Crypts » que les américains nous laissent en remerciant chaudement la salle et le public pour l’accueil. Suffocation ont frappé fort et on se demande comment les lillois ont encore de l’énergie pour ce qui les attend dans quelques minutes.
C’est l’heure d’accueillir The Black Dahlia Murder sur scène, et autant dire qu’on est heureux de les voir dans le coin après avoir clairement pensé que le groupe ne survivrait pas à la disparition tragique de Trevor Strnad en 2022. Disparition que Brian Eschbach, ancien guitariste et désormais chanteur du groupe évoquera en début de set en remerciant tout le monde pour le soutien toutes ses années et en dédiant cette soirée à leur ami disparu. On se prend d’ailleurs en pleine face les parties vocales très réussies de Brian, et on se dit que le groupe a de nouvelles très belles années devant lui tant le musicien s’est approprié les lignes de chant. Les riffs de « Kings Of The Nightworld » résonnent et c’est parti pour une leçon de death metal donnée par Brandon Ellis et Ryan Knight, tout deux en très grande forme ce soir. Le public a rechargé les batteries et met toute son énergie restante dans des pits qui rivalisent avec ceux offerts au groupe précédent. Le groupe nous propose ensuite son nouveau single « Aftermath » qui continue d’annoncer du très beau pour la sortie du futur album. Le groupe enchaine classique après classique au grand plaisir des fans qui n’hésitent pas à reprendre les paroles en chœur tout en continuant à tout donner dans la fosse. Il est temps pour Brian de se lancer dans « Statutory Ape » issu de Miasma (2005) qui ravira le public une fois de plus. L’énergie dans la salle ne baisse à aucun moment en intensité et ça n’est pas les rythmiques de Max Lavelle (basse) et Alan Cassidy (batterie) qui calmeront les ardeurs du public de The Black Lab. « Evertything Went Black » et « Miasma » annoncent déjà malheureusement la fin d’un show de légende. Mais le public en demande plus et The Black Dahlia Murder débarquent de nouveau sur scène pour deux titres dont le cultissime « Deathmask Divine » pour clôturer en beauté cette soirée de violence musicale. C’est heureux et visiblement émus par cet accueil très chaleureux qu’ils quittent la scène en ayant confirmé que l’histoire est très loin d’être terminée.

After a great prog night the night before, it was time for death metal to take centre stage at The Black Lab, with The Black Dahlia Murder, Suffocation and Khemmis putting on a mouth-watering set. The audience obviously responded to the call of the big riffs and turned out in force for this date that many had been eagerly awaiting. We were curious to finally get to see these bands live, so we headed down to the Wasquehal venue.

Khemmis took to the stage in front of an audience ready for a fight. We were surprised to see on this evening’s bill the announcement of a doom band before the two death bands, but after one track from the Americans we clearly felt closer to heavy than doom. Admittedly, the band clearly add touches of slowness and doom rhythms to their music, but you can still feel the heavy influences of the Denver outfit. Many will be taken aback by this, but listen carefully. Phil Pendergast sings powerfully while sharing the guitar parts with Ben Hutcherson, while Zach Coleman (drums) and David Small (bass) get the first heads bobbing with their well-felt rhythms. We’re discovering the band for ourselves this evening and unfortunately we’re clearly having trouble getting into it, even though the musicians are playing very well on stage. So after a few songs we left the front of the stage to enjoy the end of the set a little further back in the room. Given the response at the interval, we’d still encourage you to discover the band if you haven’t already!
The Lille crowd is ready for the Suffocation onslaught! The Americans bring us their latest nugget, Hymns From The Apocrypha, released last year. Their brutal, technical blend of death metal hits you square in the face with ‘Seraphim Enslavement’. The band seem to have found the perfect welcome and don’t hesitate to encourage the crowd to step up their circle pits and slams. This was a set with no downtime, and every second that passed was even more musically violent than the last, and « Funeral Inception » and « Breeding The Spawn » didn’t dampen the spirits. The crowd gave their all for the Americans, who were already announcing the end of their set. But there were still two tracks left, and not the least of them, for a final dose (for the moment) of frenzied pits. It’s with the excellent ‘Infecting The Crypts’ that the Americans leave us, warmly thanking the venue and the audience for their welcome. Suffocation have hit hard, and we wonder how the guys from Lille still have the energy for what awaits them in a few minutes.

The band went on to play classic after classic, much to the delight of the fans, who sang along to the lyrics as they gave their all in the pit. It was time for Brian to launch into « Statutory Ape » from Miasma (2005), which delighted the crowd once again. The energy in the room never waned and the rhythmics of Max Lavelle (bass) and Alan Cassidy (drums) didn’t dampen the spirits of The Black Lab crowd. « Evertything Went Black » and « Miasma » unfortunately heralded the end of a legendary show. But the crowd demanded more, and The Black Dahlia Murder returned to the stage for two tracks, including the cult classic « Deathmask Divine », to bring this evening of musical violence to a fitting close. They left the stage happy and visibly moved by the warm welcome, having confirmed that the story is far from over.
