Derrière le nom Curtism se cache une formation pleine d’ambition, porté par Marin au chant et à la guitare. Initialement en tant que projet bedroom pop du principal intéressé, c’est entouré d’amis musiciens et aux grès des circonstances qu’ils vont trouver leur vitesse de croisière en quatuor, se partageant de belles inspirations. Et ces inspirations transpirent dès les premiers instants de « doityourself », premier single et premier titre de cet EP. Il y a comme une vague de post-punk et cold wave qui résonne dans le rock des toulonnais, pour une composition shoegaze n’hésitant pas à jouer avec des riffs simples et pourtant d’une efficacité folle. Ces riffs, dont le déraillement final va rester simplement en tête, nous rappellent nos soirées solitaires pleine d’émotions. On se délecte du chant en français, et « violon & bille de verre » sonne comme une bande son prenante d’une vie d’adulte floue et pleine de questionnement.
A l’écoute, on a du mal à se dire que la formation est aussi jeune ! Et oui, avec une moyenne d’âge de 19 ans à peine, le quatuor sait monter de toute pièce un univers si familier et pourtant si vague. On se laisse prendre par la construction lente d' »Otherways », où chaque note vient réchauffer notre visage. Un EP un peu hors du temps qui s’efforce de laisser la place à chaque musicien. « coolkid » et la basse de Scrappy so 90’s nous fait danser avec aisance, comme un dernier instant suspendu avant le dur retour à la réalité.
Curtism frappent fort avec ce premier EP déjà riche en sonorités et inspirations. On se réjouit d’avoir de telle formation prometteuse made in France. On ne peut que les encourager à continuer dans la langue de Molière, pour un shoegaze post punk à la française qui saura trouver du public partout en Europe.

Summer’s here, and as the sun gently peeks out, we invite you to embark on a spellbinding journey into the world of Curtism. Straight from Toulon, the quartet’s debut EP is due out on July 12th via Hazard Records.
Behind the name Curtism live a band full of ambition, led by Marin on vocals and guitar. Initially a bedroom pop project of the main character, it was surrounded by musician friends and circumstances that they found their cruising speed as a quartet, sharing beautiful inspirations. And these inspirations shine through from the very first moments of « doityourself », the first single and first track on this EP. It’s like a wave of post-punk and cold wave resonating in the Toulon band’s rock, for a shoegaze composition that doesn’t hesitate to play with simple yet insanely effective riffs. These riffs, whose final derailment will simply stick in our heads, remind us of our emotional evenings alone. The French vocals are a delight, and « violon & bille de verre » sounds like a gripping soundtrack to a fuzzy, questioning adult life.
Listening to them, it’s hard to believe the band is so young! And yes, with an average age of just 19, the quartet know how to put together a universe so familiar and yet so vague. We’re taken in by the slow construction of « Otherways », where each note warms our face. A timeless EP that strives to leave room for each musician. « coolkid » and Scrappy‘s 90’s bass make us dance with ease, like a last suspended moment before the hard return to reality.
Curtism strike hard with this first EP, already rich in sound and inspiration. We’re delighted to have such a promising band made in France. We can only encourage them to continue in the language of Molière, for a French-style post-punk shoegaze that will find an audience throughout Europe.
