Formé en 1979, et fier de nombreux albums ayant marqué la scène métal européenne, Nightmare sont de retour cette année avec ce qui est leur deuxième album studio. Depuis l’arrivée de Barbara Mogore au chant, le groupe n’a cessé de tourner et de travailler pour préparer cette nouvelle sortie. Intitulée Encrypted elle est disponible depuis le 7 juin via AFM Records. Après autant d’albums quels seront les propositions musicales du groupe sur ce nouvel opus?

Dès l’intro de « Nexus Inferis » on retrouve l’envie du groupe de nous proposer un métal protéiforme entre power, death et heavy, avec toujours le souhait de nous balancer les morceaux les plus accrocheurs possibles. L’arrivée de Barbara Mogore apporte un véritable renouveau dans la musique de Nightmare, avec ce mélange parfait entre voix claire puissante et chant hurlé dévastateur comme sur « The Blossom Of My Hate ». Les riffs de Franck Milleliri et Matt Asselbergs nous remémorent que les deux musiciens sont de véritables maîtres du genre, et leur symbiose évidente se ressent sur chaque titre de l’album. Yves Campion, seul musicien présent depuis les débuts de la formation continue de faire vivre ce groupe de la plus belle des manières en sachant toujours renouveler son approche en s’adaptant aux nouveaux arrivants dans la formation. Et évidemment on saluera ses lignes de basse qui n’ont aucun mal à nous faire headbanger sans limite, comme sur « Wake The Night ». Le morceau titre représente parfaitement ce que cette nouvelle mouture de Nightmare peut proposer, avec la batterie de Niels Quiais qui sert parfaitement la puissance vocale de Barbara. Ce nouvel album du groupe regorge de tubes mettant en avant toutes les facettes d’une musique riche qui a comme souhait premier de ne pas se conformer à un seul genre musical, et le tout avec une grande réussite. Les trois derniers titres ne sont qu’une nouvelle confirmation que ce nouveau line up du groupe peut faire de grandes choses, en particulier avec « Borderlines » véritable petite pépite métale qui clôt les inédits de cet album. Mais avant de terminer la formation nous propose une version retravaillée de « Eternal Winter », issue de l’album Insurrection (2009), qui prend ici une toute nouvelle dimension grâce à la voix sublime de Barbara et aux nouveaux arrangements.
Nightmare nous proposent avec Encrypted un album qui se classe dans le tout meilleur de ce que la formation a pu sortir au long de sa longue carrière. Le futur semble radieux et on sent que l’intégration de Barbara d’abord par les concerts lui a clairement permis de mettre sa puissance vocale au service du groupe et faire que les morceaux écrits pour celui-ci lui correspondent totalement. Une vrai réussite qui vient compléter une discographie déjà bien fournie d’un groupe Français qui années après années confirme sa belle santé. Formed in 1979, and boasting numerous albums that have left their mark on the European metal scene, Nightmare are back this year with what is their second studio album. Since the arrival of Barbara Mogore on vocals, the band have been touring and working non-stop to prepare this new release. Entitled Encrypted, it has been available since 7 June via AFM Records. After so many albums, what will the band’s musical offerings be on this new opus?
Right from the intro to ‘Nexus Inferis’, you can hear the band’s desire to offer us a protean blend of power, death and heavy metal, always aiming to deliver the catchiest tracks possible. The arrival of Barbara Mogore brings a real renewal to Nightmare‘s music, with a perfect blend of powerful clean vocals and devastating screamed vocals, as on ‘The Blossom Of My Hate’. The riffs of Franck Milleliri and Matt Asselbergs remind us that the two musicians are true masters of the genre, and their obvious symbiosis can be felt on every track on the album. Yves Campion, the only musician present since the band’s inception, continues to bring the band to life in the finest of ways, always renewing his approach by adapting to new arrivals in the line-up. And, of course, his bass lines have no trouble making us headbang without limit, as on ‘Wake The Night’. The title track is a perfect representation of what this new version of Nightmare has to offer, with Niels Quiais‘ drums serving Barbara‘s powerful vocals perfectly. The band’s new album is packed with hits, showcasing all the facets of a rich musical style whose main aim is not to conform to a single musical genre, and it does so with great success. The last three tracks are just further confirmation that the band’s new line-up can do great things, particularly with ‘Borderlines’, a real little metal nugget which closes the unreleased tracks on this album. But before we finish, the band offer us a reworked version of ‘Eternal Winter’, from their 2009 album Insurrection, which takes on a whole new dimension thanks to Barbara‘s sublime voice and the new arrangements.
With Encrypted, Nightmare offer us an album that ranks among the very best the band have released in their long career. The future looks bright, and it’s clear that Barbara’s integration into the band through live performances has enabled her to put her vocal power to good use and make the songs written for her totally her own. It’s a real success story, adding to the already impressive discography of a French band that has been going from strength to strength year after year.
