Nous attendions cette date depuis son annonce, tant l’affiche nous inspirait. Le 25 juillet, Le Belvédère accueillait le projet écossais Hellripper, les américains de Cloak et les suédois de Sarcator, venus nous faire découvrir leur Death/Trash. Une belle soirée annoncée, qui nous a fait prendre la route, direction Namur!

Nous arrivons quelques minutes seulement avant que Sarcator ne monte sur scène, juste le temps d’observer la vue imprenable de la terrasse du Belvédère, surplombant la ville. Les suédois ont donc pour mission d’ouvrir la soirée, non pas de chauffer la salle dans laquelle règne déjà une atmosphère estivale. Les rythmes rapides viennent très vite nous percuter. Des accélérations spectaculaires viennent régulièrement clôturer les compositions du groupe. Sarcator dégage une énergie brute, mélangeant subtilement le trash, le black, le death… La voix puissante et sombre de Mateo Tervonen est plus que convaincante, tandis que ses riffs de guitare nous Leo Buchalle(guitare) arpente la scène avec un pied en botte qui ne semble pas réfréner son énergie. Derrière ses fûts, on observe Jesper Rosén taper frénétiquement les caisses et cymbales. “Grave Maggot Future” emballe par ses riffs originaux, avant que “The Long Lost” ne nous plonge dans une ambiance au sonorités heavy très old school. Quand Mateo nous demande si nous voulons du rapide, on pense à une blague tant le rythme est déjà globalement très haut, mais non, le tempo va encore augmenter, dans une véritable démonstration de vitesse! Après des applaudissements chaleureux, il est temps de conclure avec “The Hour of Torment”, qui démarre avec une ligne de basse de Felix Lindkvist. C’est ce moment que choisissent certains pour ouvrir un petit pit et se déchainer sur ce dernier titre, toujours empli d’énergie et d’un rythme impressionnant. Après cette tournée, les suédois ont prévu de sortir un album début 2025… à suivre donc!
Il est temps d’aller respirer un peu. La salle déjà bien chaude à notre arrivée s’est encore un peu réchauffée avec l’arrivée de nombreux spectateurs. En effet, beaucoup ont été convaincus par l’affiche, et nous ne sommes pas les seuls à avoir fait de la route pour venir! Lorsque nous regagnons le devant de la scène, nous sommes déjà interpellés par le changement de décor. En effet, on sent que Cloak travaille son visuel, entre bougeoirs, encens et autres éléments scéniques qui nous mettent déjà dans une ambiance. L’entrée sur scène des musiciens est également appliquée, avec une introduction samplée donnant un aspect majestueux à ce début de show. Sous le regard perçant de Scott Taysom (chant), nous sommes assaillis par le son massif du groupe d’Atlanta. Cloak arrive à intégrer à la fois des éléments très old school mais aussi bien plus modernes dans ses compositions. Leur black metal empreint de mélancolie et de mélodies nous embarque. Les titres, tantôt planants et envoûtants, tantôt puissants et graves font secouer la tête à tout le public, absorbé par la prestation des Américains. Les transitions, toujours travaillées grâce à des samples, nous permettent de rester plongés dans l’univers du groupe, comme en apnée durant tout le set. Il faut également souligner l’excellent son du Belvédère, salle d’environ 200 places, qui nous régale les oreilles. Cloak agit sur nous comme un rouleau compresseur mais sous lequel on prend un grand plaisir à passer. La chaleur de la salle ne décourage pas le public, qui reste massé devant la scène durant toute la prestation du groupe. Après un tonnerre d’applaudissements, il est temps pour nous de dire au revoir à Cloak, en espérant les revoir très prochainement après ce show plus que convaincant!
Il est enfin temps de retrouver Hellripper sur scène. Depuis le début de la soirée, on croise un nombre impressionnant de personnes avec à un t -shirt à l’effigie de ce projet musical écossais. Celui-ci est conçu comme un one man band porté par James McBain, qui se fait donc accompagner de musiciens pour ses tournées. Dès les premières notes, le pit s’ouvre et le public se déchaîne dans la salle surchauffée. L’énergie de James et de ses musiciens est particulièrement communicative, et le restera tout au long du set. James change d’ailleurs de place sans arrêt, passant de micro en micro, occupant de manière charismatique tout l’espace scénique. La prestation se veut dynamique et cela est contagieux. Le pit s’ouvre en effet de plus en plus, notamment avec “Nekroslut”, et même dans le fond, il est impossible de rester statique face à l’énergie libérée sur scène. On observe d’ailleurs cela comme un tableau depuis l’arrière du pit, rendu encore plus spectaculaire par les lights d’une grande qualité. Le black/speed metal de Hellripper convainc par sa puissance et ses compositions, toutes aussi entraînantes les unes que les autres. Le pit est infatigable malgré une chaleur digne des enfers. Un véritable chaos est d’ailleurs demandé pour “The Affair of the Poisons”. James relance sans cesse le public, l’encourageant à participer toujours plus. Durant ce set, on va piocher dans tous les albums de Hellripper, y compris dans les premiers avec notamment “From Hell”. Evidemment Warlocks Grim and Withered Hags, dernier sorti, n’est pas en reste avec notamment son emblématique morceau d’ouverture “Nuckelavee”. “Nunfucking Armageddon 666” nous offre des passages qui semblent tout droit venus des limbes de l’enfer. Après un peu de fast trash avec “Bastard of Hates” qui ravit tout ceux qui hurlent “faster” depuis le début du show, on quitte progressivement Hellripper sous les acclamations du public nombreux, boosté au speed metal.
Nous repartons donc dans notre contrée lilloise, ravis de cette soirée qui a tenu toutes ses promesses entre black et speed metal, teintée de trash et autres joyeusetés auditives. Que ce soit la découverte de Starcator, la confirmation en live de la puissance de Cloak, le plaisir de retrouver Hellripper sur scène, et même l’accueil et les prestations qu’offre la salle, tout dans cette soirée nous a prouvé que nous avions eu raison de faire le déplacement. Et il n’est pas impossible qu’on nous recroise lors de prochaines dates dans cette salle, dont on vous conseille d’aller voir la programmation!

We’d been looking forward to this show ever since it was announced, so inspired were we by the line-up. On July 25th, Le Belvédère welcomed Scottish band Hellripper, American band Cloak and Swedish band Sarcator, who came to show us their death/trash music. It was sure to be a great evening, and we headed off in the direction of Namur!

We arrive just a few minutes before Sarcator take to the stage, just enough time to take in the breathtaking view from the Belvédère terrace overlooking the city. The Swedes’ mission is to open the evening, not to heat up the room, which is already in a summery mood. The fast-paced rhythms quickly hit home. Spectacular accelerations regularly bring the band’s compositions to a close. Sarcator exude a raw energy, subtly blending trash, black and death… Mateo Tervonen‘s powerful, dark voice is more than convincing, while his guitar riffs absorb us. Leo Buchalle (guitar) strides around the stage with one foot in his boot, and his energy doesn’t seem to be dampened. Behind his drums, we watch Jesper Rosén frantically banging the drums and cymbals. ‘Grave Maggot Future’ gets the crowd going with its original riffs, before “The Long Lost” plunges us into a very old school heavy sound. When Mateo asks us if we want it fast, we think it’s a joke because the pace is already very high overall, but no, the tempo is going to increase again, in a real demonstration of speed! After a warm round of applause, it’s time to close with ‘The Hour of Torment’, which kicks off with a bass line from Felix Lindkvist. This is the moment that some people choose to open a small pit and go wild on this last track, still full of energy and an impressive rhythm. After this tour, the Swedes are planning to release an album at the beginning of 2025… stay tuned!
Time to take a breather. The venue, already very warm when we arrived, has warmed up a little more with the arrival of many spectators. Many of them had been convinced by the line-up, and we weren’t the only ones who had travelled a long way to get here! When we returned to the front of the stage, we were already struck by the change of scenery. You can tell that Cloak are working on their visuals, with candlesticks, incense and other scenic elements to set the mood. The musicians’ entrance onto the stage is equally well executed, with a sampled introduction lending a majestic air to the start of the show. Under the piercing gaze of Scott Taysom (vocals), we are assaulted by the Atlanta band’s massive sound. Cloak manage to incorporate both very old school elements and much more modern ones into their compositions. Their melancholy, melodic black metal takes you on a ride. The tracks, sometimes soaring and bewitching, sometimes powerful and serious, have the whole audience shaking their heads, absorbed in the Americans’ performance. The transitions, always crafted using samples, kept us immersed in the band’s universe, as if in apnoea throughout the set. We should also mention the excellent sound of the Belvedere, a venue with a capacity of around 200, which is a real treat for the ears. Cloak acted like a steamroller on us, but it was a pleasure to get under it. The heat of the venue didn’t discourage the audience, who remained massed in front of the stage throughout the band’s performance. After a thunderous round of applause, it was time to say goodbye to Cloak, and hope to see them again very soon after this more than convincing show!
It’s finally time for Hellripper to take to the stage. Since the start of the evening, an impressive number of people have been wearing T-shirts bearing the effigy of this Scottish musical project. It’s conceived as a one-man band fronted by James McBain, who is accompanied by musicians on his tours. From the very first notes, the pit opened up and the crowd went wild in the overheated venue. The energy of James and his musicians is particularly infectious, and remains so throughout the set. In fact, James changed places constantly, moving from microphone to microphone, charismatically occupying the entire stage. The performance is dynamic, and it’s contagious. The pit opens up more and more, particularly with ‘Nekroslut’, and even in the background it’s impossible to remain static in the face of the energy released on stage. In fact, you can see it all from the back of the pit, made all the more spectacular by the high-quality lighting. Hellripper’s black/speed metal is convincing with its power and its equally catchy compositions. The pit is tireless despite the hellish heat, and chaos is in full swing for ‘The Affair of the Poisons’. James kept the audience on their toes, encouraging them to participate even more. During the set, the audience was treated to a selection from all Hellripper‘s albums, including the early ones such as ‘From Hell’. Of course Warlocks Grim and Withered Hags, their latest release, is not to be outdone, with its emblematic opening track ‘Nuckelavee’. ‘Nunfucking Armageddon 666’ offers us passages that seem to have come straight from the limbo of hell. After a bit of fast trash with ‘Bastard of Hates’, which delighted all those who had been screaming ‘faster’ since the start of the show, we gradually left Hellripper to the cheers of the large crowd, boosted by speed metal.
So we’re off to Lille, delighted with an evening that lived up to all its promises of black and speed metal, tinged with trash and other aural joys. Whether it was the discovery of Starcator, the live confirmation of the power of Cloak, the pleasure of seeing Hellripper on stage again, or even the warm welcome and the performances at the venue, everything about this evening proved that we were right to make the trip. And it’s not impossible that we’ll be seeing you again on future dates at this venue, whose programme we recommend you check out!
