Le groupe a changé depuis son dernier EP en 2022, et encore plus depuis son premier album en 2020. Yours Truly est désormais un trio, composé des membres fondateurs Mikaila Delgado et Teddie Winder-Haron, rejoints par le batteur Henry Beard. Ils sont prêts à sortir leur nouvel album TOXIC d’ici la fin de la semaine. Il sortira via UNFD le 16 août en tant que suite de is this what i look like ? avec un son plus sombre et plus audacieux.

Yours Truly démarre sur les chapeaux de roues avec le titre » Back 2 U « , qui capte notre attention dès le début. Il n’y a pas d’introduction, de gros riffs nous sont lancés à la figure pour nous rappeler que leur époque plus pop n’est pas celle dans laquelle ils se penchent pour TOXIC. Pas d’inquiétude, on ressent toujours leur énergie pop-punk originelle dans les morceaux, et des refrains accrocheurs mènent la plupart des chansons de l’album. « Sour » correspond bien à cette ambiance pop-punk, avec une fois de plus des riffs de guitare proéminents. Cependant, on sent des changements et des améliorations dans la voix de Mikaila Delgado. Sa voix est plus envoûtante que dans les albums précédents, nous obligeant à suivre les montagnes russes d’émotions de Yours Truly. « California Sober » suit cette atmosphère, combinant des mélodies accrocheuses avec des émotions brutes, luttant contre la santé mentale et l’abus de drogues. « Let Go » nous connecte avec l’introduction d’un doux rythme électro, avec la voix triste de Mikaila Delgado discutant du défi de laisser partir quelqu’un quand on se sent piégé dans une situation douloureuse.
Le titre « All That I’m Not » introduit un ton plus triste avec une mélodie plus calme, ajoutant même quelques cordes à certains moments. Il offre une pause tranquille dans le disque, loin des riffs de guitare lourds, avec des voix qui deviennent encore plus puissantes, s’adressant au public. Dans la continuité de cette pause, » Love Feels Like » est une courte ballade envoûtante, menée par des voix et des rythmes électro, qui sert d’interlude. Juste après, « Bloodshot Eyes » nous ramène dans l’univers plus pop-punk des australiens, où la guitare de Teddie Winder-Haron reprend sa puissance, en parfaite adéquation avec la batterie d’Henry Beard.
« Sinking » réintroduit des éléments électro dès l’ouverture avec une voix robotique avant de laisser place au chant plein d’émotion de Mikaila Delgado, créant un sentiment de désespoir accentué par les cris de Jono Hawkey (chanteur de BLOOM). Cependant, les accents mélodiques laissent entrevoir une lueur d’espoir. Puis « Desaturated » commence avec les paroles « I don’t care much for it anyways, always knew you would never change », avec presque aucun son de fond. Dans certaines chansons, les instruments prennent le dessus ; ici, c’est la voix qui est au premier plan, nous donnant envie de bouger et de crier. Pour clore l’album, la chanson « Call My Name » ressemble à un hymne puissant, qui résonne en nous grâce à la voix éclatante de Mikaila Delgado. Une clôture parfaite pour représenter l’ancienne énergie de Yours Truly, les nouveaux éléments introduits et l’étendue de la palette vocale de Mikaila Delgado.
TOXIC représente l’évolution audacieuse de Yours Truly, et on peut le sentir dans la progression de ces dix chansons, commençant avec quelqu’un plus enclin à rester coincé dans une situation, mais trouvant finalement plus facile de s’en éloigner et de grandir. Avec ce nouvel album, le groupe nous emmène dans un voyage à travers la frustration, la colère, la tristesse et l’acceptation, avec un son vrai et honnête qui ne fait que renforcer la certitude que Yours Truly n’est pas prêt de disparaître de la scène pop-punk/alt-rock.

Yours Truly kicks off right with the track “Back 2 U,” grabbing our attention from the beginning. There is no introduction, big riffs are thrown in our faces to remind us that their poppier era is not what they are leaning into for TOXIC. Don’t worry, we can still feel their original pop-punk energy in the tracks, and catchy choruses lead most of the songs on the record. “Sour” indeed fits this pop-punk vibe, with once again prominent guitar riffs. However, we can sense the changes and improvements in Mikaila Delgado’s vocals. Her voice is more haunting than in previous releases, compelling us to ride Yours Truly’s rollercoaster of emotions. “California Sober” follows this atmosphere, combining catchy melodies with raw emotions, struggling with mental health and drug abuse. “Let Go” connects with us through the introduction of a gentle electro beat, with Mikaila Delgado’s sorrowful voice discussing the challenge of letting go of someone when you feel trapped in a painful situation.
The track “All That I’m Not” introduces a sadder tone with a calmer melody, even adding some strings at moments. It offers a quiet break in the record, away from the heavy guitar riffs, with the vocals becoming even more powerful, reaching out to the audience. Continuing this break, “Love Feels Like” is a short, mesmerizing ballad led by vocals and electro beats, serving as an interlude. Right after that, “Bloodshot Eyes” takes us back to Yours Truly’s more pop-punk universe, where Teddie Winder-Haron’s guitar reclaims its power, working perfectly with Henry Beard’s drums.
“Sinking” reintroduces some electro elements in the opening with a robotic voice before making way for Mikaila Delgado’s emotion-filled vocals, creating a sense of desperation accentuated by Jono Hawkey’s (BLOOM’s vocalist) screams. However, the melodic undertones allow a glimpse of hope to shine through. Then “Desaturated” starts off with the lyrics “I don’t care much for it anyways, always knew you would never change,” with almost no background sound. In some songs, the instruments take the lead; here, the vocals are at the forefront, making us want to move and scream along. To close the record, the song “Call My Name” feels like a powerful anthem, resonating through us thanks to Mikaila Delgado’s shining vocals. A perfect closure to represent Yours Truly’s old energy, their newly introduced elements, and the extent of Mikaila Delgado’s vocal range.
TOXIC represents the bold evolution of Yours Truly, and we can feel it in the progression of these ten songs, beginning with someone more inclined to be stuck in a situation but ultimately finding it easier to walk away and grow. With this new album, the band takes us on a journey through frustration, anger, sadness, and acceptance, with a true and honest sound that only reinforces the certainty that Yours Truly is not disappearing from the pop-punk/alt-rock scene anytime soon.
