Le quatuor australien Stand Atlantic est de retour, après plusieurs singles, pour présenter son quatrième album studio, Was Here, via Hopeless Records. Le 23 août, une vague de vulnérabilité, de créativité et de sonorité du groupe sera libérée. Le groupe pop-punk a évolué et est maintenant prêt à partager quelque chose de bien plus éclectique que ce à quoi nous sommes habitués.

Le titre « WAKE UP-SIT DOWN-SHUT UP » ouvre l’album, et il est tout à fait approprié, mettant la voix de Bonnie Fraser au premier plan dès le début. Il plante le décor, avec une tension qui monte déjà grâce à des riffs de guitare saturés, menant à une petite explosion dans le refrain. L’ensemble de la chanson maintient un rythme régulier qui nous guide vers le reste de l’album. Stand Atlantic ont habilement mélangé leur signature pop-punk avec d’énormes vibrations électro, des solos de guitare et de petits breaks. Ces éléments sont mis en valeur par les featuring présents sur l’album : PVRIS et Bruses sur « GIRL$ », Sueco sur « NOSE BLEED » et Polaris sur « CRIMINAL », qui ajoute encore plus d’essence metalcore moderne.
« NOSE BLEED », en duo avec Sueco, est une chanson où la partie électro est mise de côté pour un moment, avec une douce mélodie en arrière-plan, mettant l’accent sur les deux voix. Cela fait du bien, d’autant plus qu’elle est suivie par « LOVE U ANYWAY », une chanson d’amour plus légère que le début de l’album. Avec des synthés, elle nous fait découvrir une autre facette de l’éclectisme de Stand Atlantic, avec une mélodie entraînante qui nous enveloppera l’esprit.
La plupart des chansons sont très énergiques, quelque chose sur lequel on pourrait danser lors d’une soirée, comme « FREAKIN“ OUT », qui a une forte connotation pop, ou « KISSIN” KILLE COBRAS ». Cette dernière est introduite par de lourds riffs de guitare avant de passer en douceur à un rythme électro que l’on pourrait facilement entendre dans un club. Dans le refrain, il est facile d’imaginer une foule chantant, sautant et dansant. La chanson contient des atmosphères très différentes. Tout comme la succession de « NOSE BLEED » et « LOVE U ANYWAY » avait du sens, celle entre « KISSIN’ KILLE COBRAS », « WARZ0NE » et « CRIMINAL » en a encore plus. L’énergie est plus forte, tout comme la colère, « WARZ0NE » offrant un titre qui pourrait facilement figurer sur un album de Wage War par exemple.
Après toute cette colère, nous avons besoin de quelque chose de plus doux pour nous calmer un moment, et « 17 » est le morceau qu’il nous faut. Bonnie Fraser atteint son point le plus vulnérable, livrant ses paroles sur un rythme qui contraste complètement avec les morceaux précédents, mais qui finit par être exactement ce dont nous avions besoin, en réintroduisant une ambiance plus pop-punk. La fin de l’album est plus légère, avec des mélodies douces et des refrains calmes et accrocheurs comme « G.A.G. », qui pourrait résonner comme un hymne estival. En parlant d’été, « Rockstar » a vraiment l’air d’être écouté sur une plage avec un verre à la main, avec une mélodie groovy qui nous rappelle un peu l’ambiance de la chanson « Tijuana Sunrise » de Goldfinger.
Enfin, nous revenons à une ambiance de club avec « SEX ON THE BEACH ». Avec des passages rappés, la chanson a un rythme régulier qui s’accélère dans le refrain pour vous faire danser ! Stand Atlantic termine son album avec un ver d’oreille que vous avez probablement déjà entendu, « KILL(H)ER », qui parle de la façon dont le doute de soi peut vous affecter négativement. Avec ce morceau en tête, vous devriez vous sentir motivé pour tout ce que vous voulez faire !
Was Here permet à Stand Atlantic de devenir un groupe plus éclectique. Ils ne se soucient plus des règles et sortent de leur univers. Ils n’ont pas peur de nous montrer ce dont ils sont capables et sont prêts à prendre des risques pour y parvenir. Si vous cherchez quelque chose de différent de leur son habituel et que vous voulez expérimenter plusieurs atmosphères en une seule écoute, c’est cet album qu’il vous faut.

The track “WAKE UP-SIT DOWN-SHUT UP” opens the record, and it feels right, putting Bonnie Fraser’s voice at the forefront from the beginning. It sets the scene, with tension already building up through saturated guitar riffs, leading to a small explosion in the chorus. The whole song maintains a steady rhythm that guides us into the rest of the album. Stand Atlantic has skillfully mixed their pop-punk signature with huge electro vibes, guitar solos, and small breakdowns. These elements are further highlighted by the features on the album: PVRIS and Bruses on “GIRL$,” Sueco on “NOSE BLEED,” and Polaris on “CRIMINAL,” which adds even more of a modern metalcore essence.
“NOSE BLEED,” featuring Sueco, offers a song where the electro part is set aside for a moment, with a gentle melody in the background, putting the emphasis on the two voices. It feels great, especially as it is followed by “LOVE U ANYWAY,” a love song lighter than the beginning of the album. With synths, it lets us discover yet another side of Stand Atlantic’s eclecticism, with a catchy melody that will wrap around our minds.
Most of the songs have high energy, something you could dance to on a night out, like “FREAKIN’ OUT,” which has a strong pop vibe, or “KISSIN’ KILLE COBRAS.” The latter is introduced with heavy guitar riffs before smoothly transitioning into an electro beat that could easily be heard in a club. In the chorus, it’s easy to imagine a crowd singing along, jumping, and dancing around. The song contains some very different atmospheres. Just as the succession of “NOSE BLEED” and “LOVE U ANYWAY” made sense, the one between “KISSIN’ KILLE COBRAS,” “WARZ0NE,” and “CRIMINAL” makes even more sense. The energy is higher, as well as the anger, with “WARZ0NE” offering a track that could easily fit on a Wage War record for example.
After all this anger, we need something softer to cool down for a moment, and “17” is the track for that. Bonnie Fraser hits her most vulnerable point, delivering her lyrics over a beat that completely contrasts the previous tracks but ends up being exactly what we needed, reintroducing more of a pop-punk vibe. The end of the record follows with lighter vibes, featuring soft melodies and calm, catchy choruses like “G.A.G.,” which could resonate as a summer anthem. Speaking of summer, “Rockstar” definitely has the vibe to be listened to on a beach with a drink in hand, with a groovy melody that reminds us a bit of the mood of the song “Tijuana Sunrise” by Goldfinger.
Finally, we head back to a club vibe with “SEX ON THE BEACH.” With rapped passages, the song has a steady rhythm that accelerates in the chorus to get you dancing! Stand Atlantic closes their album with an earworm that you’ve probably already heard, “KILL(H)ER,” which talks about how self-doubt can negatively affect you. With this track stuck in your mind, you should feel motivated for whatever you want to do!
Was Here allows Stand Atlantic to grow as a more eclectic band. They no longer care about the rules and are stepping out of their box. They aren’t afraid to show us what they’re capable of and are willing to take risks to do it.
