Seulement deux ans depuis la sortie de leur dernier album, et pourtant ce nouvel opus de Zeal & Ardor était attendu de tous! GREIF, entièrement autoproduit, sort ce 23 août, et les quelques extraits déjà diffusés sont particulièrement alléchants. Impossible de ne pas vous parler de cette nouvelle pépite musicale!

Dès les premières notes, avec “the Bird, the Lion and the Wildkin”, on retrouve cette mélodie samplée qui nous avait séduit lors du concert de Zeal & Ardor au Rock In Bourlon. On en est seulement à l’introduction de cet album, et on a déjà des frissons. D’autant plus que ce titre est en lien avec la symbolique de cet album. En effet, GREIF est inspiré du Vogel-Gryff, tradition ancestrale de la ville de Bâle, représentée par une créature à la fois lion, oiseau et serpent qui symbolise les travailleurs de la ville, s’opposant aux élites.
Zeal & Ardor est un projet mené par Manuel Gagneux, qui s’est cette fois entouré de ses musiciens en studio. Ce projet est donc en perpétuel évolution, toujours au service d’un son unique, allant se nourrir dans toutes les influences possibles. Avec Zeal & Ardor, Manuel Gagneux joue avec les rythmes et les styles musicaux. Il déstructure, déconstruit, puis avec toutes ses petites pièces de puzzle musical, réassemble, crée quelque chose de nouveau, d’unique. “Kilonova”, “Disease” ou encore “Go home my friend” rassemble tous les éléments qui font la puissance depuis maintenant 10 ans de ce projet de génie. Mais la force de Zeal & Ardor c’est aussi de continuer à nous surprendre, avec notamment “Fend You Off” dont le chant rappelle certains grands titres de rock progressif, incluant pourtant toujours des chœurs, la voix très puissante et reconnaissable du frontman, et une structure musicale unique. On est également cueillis par “are you the only one now”, balade toute en douceur, qui laisse sortir les cris de Manuel Gagneux dans un torrent d’émotions. Dans un tout autre registre émotionnel, “Clawing Out”, single déjà sorti, nous happe, avec une force magistrale, avec ses variations de tempos et la présence d’influences electro.
On est surpris de voir “une ville vide”, en français donc, sur la tracklist, le groupe venant de suisse germanophone. Il s’agit ici d’un morceau sans chant, dans lequel un synthétiseur occupe une place centrale. D’autres sonorités affluent au fil de l’écoute, avec notamment “Solace”, musicalement sombre et angoissant, très épuré, avec un accord piano / voix parfait. Au milieu de toutes ces émotions, “Sugarcoat” donne envie de laisser s’exprimer son corps sur la musique, de fermer les yeux et de juste ressentir le rythme dans une forme d’archaïsme rassurant et libérateur.
Un peu avant de clôre GREIF on retrouve le thème de l’introduction avec “Hide in the Shade” cette fois avec beaucoup plus de puissance, entouré de batterie, guitares et voix. On termine donc avec “to my ilk”, premier titre révélé de cet album. Une fin tout en douceur qui nous fait tout doucement revenir du torrent d’émotions que nous a provoqué GREIF.
Zeal & Ardor signe encore une album d’anthologie avec GREIF. Le projet évolue sans cesse, nous surprenant très agréablement à chaque fois, tout en gardant son identité forte et unique. Un album dans notre top de l’année sans hésiter!

GREIF, which is entirely self-produced, comes out on August 23rd, and the few extracts already released are particularly tantalising. It’s impossible not to talk to you about this new musical nugget!

From the very first notes, with ‘The Bird, the Lion and the Wildkin’, we’re back to the sampled melody that seduced us at the Zeal & Ardor concert at Rock In Bourlon. We’ve only just got to the introduction to this album, and we’re already getting chills. All the more so as this title is linked to the symbolism of this album. Indeed, GREIF is inspired by the Vogel-Gryff, an ancestral tradition of the city of Basel, represented by a creature that is part lion, part bird and part snake, symbolising the city’s workers in opposition to the elite.
Zeal & Ardor is a project led by Manuel Gagneux, this time surrounded by his studio musicians. It’s a project in constant evolution, always at the service of a unique sound, drawing on every possible influence. With Zeal & Ardor, Manuel Gagneux plays with rhythms and musical styles. He destructures, deconstructs, then reassembles all his little musical jigsaw pieces to create something new and unique. ‘Kilonova’, “Disease” and “Go home my friend” bring together all the elements that have made this genius project so powerful over the last 10 years. But Zeal & Ardor‘s strength is also in continuing to surprise us, with ‘Fend You Off’ in particular, whose vocals are reminiscent of some of the great progressive rock tracks, yet still include backing vocals, the frontman’s very powerful and recognisable voice, and a unique musical structure. We’re also taken aback by ‘are you the only one now’, a gentle ballad that lets Manuel Gagneux‘s cries come out in a torrent of emotion. In a completely different emotional register, ‘Clawing Out’, a single already released, catches us with masterly force, with its variations in tempo and the presence of electro influences.
We’re surprised to see ‘une ville vide’, in French, on the tracklist, as the band hail from German-speaking Switzerland. This is a track without vocals, in which a synthesiser takes centre stage. Other sounds come into play as you listen, notably ‘Solace’, musically dark and angst-ridden, very pared down, with a perfect piano/voice harmony. In the midst of all these emotions, ‘Sugarcoat’ makes you want to let your body express itself to the music, to close your eyes and just feel the rhythm in a form of reassuring, liberating archaism.
Shortly before closing GREIF return to the theme of the introduction with ‘Hide in the Shade’, this time with much more power, surrounded by drums, guitars and vocals. We finish with ‘to my ilk’, the first track revealed on this album. It’s a gentle end to a torrent of emotions from GREIF.
Zeal & Ardor have produced another anthology album with GREIF. The project is constantly evolving, pleasantly surprising us each time, while retaining its strong, unique identity. A top album of the year, without a doubt!
