Alors maintenant on touille dans la marmite du Death Français en allant chercher encore plus loin comme on fouillerais les vieux bacs chez le disquaire du coin. On pioche et on retrouve une perle sortie des fagots avec Agressor, et à sa tête Alex Colin-Tocquaine et sa bande de fou furieux chevelus. Formés à Antibes en 1986, rien que ça, puis ayant choisi le Nord comme destination finale pour atterrir, c’est avec le plus grand plaisir qu’on a pu à nouveau poser nos oreilles sur la délicate (ironie quand tu nous tiens…) musique que nous offre  Agressor. Rien que leur nom de groupe et on en perdrait un œil tellement ça pique en mode direct frontal uppercut. Et c’est justement ça qu’on aime chez eux, ça et la rapidité executive ainsi que l’effet instantané que provoque leur riffs. On est parfaitement dans la veine Thrash Death, limite proche d’un bon vieux Crossover bien sale qui sent bon les années 80 à l’époque ou Thrash et Crossover étaient cousins. Leurs morceaux sont un enchaînement de riffs de gratte d’une méchanceté absolue le tout saupoudré d’une voix délicieusement acide et brutale, qui vient vous chercher et vous défouraille en vous faisant griller sur place comme des petits fours dans un four trop chaud. On brûle vivant comme une combustion spontanée et on aime ça, parfait pour incendier cette soirée Thrash Death déjà parfaitement entamée. Leur set a été savamment pondu dans tout ce que les fans d’Agressor attendaient en commançant leur show par « When Darkness », puis s’en sont suivis « Bloodshed », « God From The Sky », « The Sorcerer », « Deathreat », « Warrior Heart », « Hyaloid », « Eldest Things », « Paralytic Disease », « Overloaded », « Rebirth », « Someone To Eat ». Douze perles au total qui auront ravivé la flamme du tout début du Thrash Death Français, à l’heure où Agressor, Loudblast et tant d’autres partageaient l’affiche pour mieux enflammer les planches de cette scène qui aura marqué l’histoire du Death metal Français.

Maintenant on quitte la France pour traverser le ciel et la mer et on arrive aux USA avec Incantation mené par John McEntee et ses acolytes. Après le speed d’Agressor qui nous ont envoyé la sauce piquante, on avait besoin d’un peu de repos cavernicole avant de se faire littéralement aspirer par les profondeurs marécageuses de l’impeccable Death teinté de Doom d‘Incantation. Nos quatre compères se sont formés à la toute fin des années 80, en août 1989 plus précisément durant les glorieuses heures du Death, à Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Façon sympathique de nous envoyer sur Saturne en fêtant avec nous leur 35 ans de carrière, rien que ça. La magie avec Incantation réside dans l’effet de surprise. Avec une adaptabilité sans conséquence à passer d’une rapidité tranchante à une lourdeur soudaine et massive, on ne fait pas de vieux os avec eux. La brutalité monumentale qui nous est envoyée en pleine tête n’a rien à envier à personne tellement elle est incomparablement et surtout parfaitement dans les plus pures racines du Death Metal Américain. Mais leur originalité la plus démentielle réside tout autant dans leur côté prouesses du manche doublée par une rythmique saccadés et rentre-dedans, mais aussi par leur lenteur cadavérique flirtant avec un bon vieux Night of the Living Dead de A. Romero. Car dès que le tempo ralenti, on peut sentir une boue sinueuse s’engouffrer dans vos entrailles en vous happant pour mieux vous faire crouler sous un poids écrasant, mais en même temps tellement satisfaisant. Nos warriors des enfers ont commencé leur show en nous servant « Carrion Prophecy », en tant que premier morceau puis en enchainant avec « Shadows of the Ancient Empire », « Concordat (The Pact) I », « Vanquish in Vengeance », « Fury’s Manifesto », « Offerings (The Swarm) IV », « Blasphemous Cremation », « Invocation (Chthonic Merge) X », « Blissful Bloodshower », « Unholy Massacre », « Essence Ablaze », « The Ibex Moon », et pour finir ce show magnifique et haut en couleur « Impending Diabolical Conquest ». Merci à Incantation de toujours faire parti du paysage du Death Metal Américain depuis leur début, car c’est toujours un régal de dévorer leur notes poignantes avec abondance.

Pour le final, quoi de mieux qu’un groupe hommage aux excellentissimes et surtout cultissimes Death, formés au tout début des années 80, en 1984 à Altamonte Springs, Floride et mené par une véritable icône du genre, j’ai nommé Mister Chuck Schuldiner himself. et pour ce, j’ai nommé Left to Die, groupe hommage aux incontournables Death avec une recette miracle en piochant pile dans le chaudron démentiel et en nous sortant leur meilleure recette, celle d’anciens membres de la scène death rendant hommage à Death. En creusant dans la première période de la discographie de Death, ils nous ont fait le plaisir de nous rejouer une belle brochette de leurs morceaux cultes de Scream Bloody Gore sorti en 1987, ainsi que dans son intégralité l’album Leprosy de 1988. Avec Matt Harvey (Exhumed, Gruesome) au chant, Rick Rozz (ex-Death) à la guitare, Terry Butler (Obituary, ex-Death) à la basse, et Gus Rios (Gruesome) à la batterie, quoi de plus cool d’avoir le privilège et l’opportunité de pouvoir entendre des morceaux de Death par des anciens membres de Death mais aussi de tous ces acteurs de la scène death metal Américaine. Beaucoup de monde était réunis dans le public de The Black Lab pour pouvoir assister au show de Left to Die et revivre ces moments incroyables que nous a fait partager Death à ses débuts, groupe qui à totalement marqué la scène Death Metal Américaine, en portant la scène Floridienne en tant que fer de lance du genre. Tout y était, riffs de gratte et de basse ciselés et joués à la perfection, rythmiques démentielles et un chant agressif, le plus proche au possible de celui de Chuck Schuldiner tout en gardant la touche si particulière de Matt Harvey. Quoi de plus beau pour ce magnifique hommage à Death que le résultat de cette perfection auditive incarnée. En introduction Left to Die nous à sorti son plus beau « Hello Hooray » du grand Alice Cooper, un beau clin d’oeil au Monsieur au chapeau noir et aux gants de cuir, icône de la scène Hard Rock, avant de nous plonger dans des noirceurs beaucoup plus profondes. Puis se sont enchaînés douze titres absolument cultes de Death en commençant par « Leprosy », puis « Born Dead », « Forgotten Past », « Infernal Death », « Sacrificial », « Open Casket », « Primitive Ways », « Choke on It », « Torn to Pieces », « Regurgitated Guts », « Left to Die, pour finir par l’admirable « Zombie Ritual ». Un plaisir, que dis-je, une réelle jouissance d’avoir eu chance d’assister à ce show hommage à Death de Left to Die qui nous a envoyé du rêve en nous faisant vibrer pendant plus d’une heure, et en nous offrant un cauchemar vivant, celui dans lequel Chuck Schuldiner nous a plongé durant ses jeunes années jusqu’à marqué nos jeunes esprits torturés.

There was something of a foretaste of the new musical season at The Black Lab. On Saturday 17 August, a horde of metalheads, most of them thrash death metal fans, were patiently waiting for the first notes of guttural sound to rattle their eardrums. On the bill were two bands from the French thrash death metal scene, Dagon and Agressor, accompanied by their American neighbours Incantation and Left to Die, ready to make you forget your recent holiday in the sun surrounded by mermaids and shellfish.

Dagon are an old hand, a stalwart of the French Death Metal scene, particularly in Northern France. Formed in Bruay-la-Buissière in the early 1990s and having split up in 1992, they have recently reformed to the delight of us, and above all their die-hard fans, making them literally one of the pioneering bands of the genre in France, along with so many others. With a sound of abysmal heaviness ready to pick your brain on the first listen, Dagon take pleasure in drawing us into an infernal, ghostly and demonic universe, haunted by a horde of the most tortured spirits coming to tickle your ears. Their scratchy riffs are right in the vein of traditional Death Metal, accompanied by heavy bass and percussive drums, with Guillaume Lefebvre‘s beastly voice added to the mix. Their songs went on and on, with their fans from the early days receptive and loyal to the post, reliving the key Death Metal moments from the very early 90s that marked their tortured minds forever. Dagon treated us to tracks such as ‘Shadows Over the Field’, ‘Verge of Demise’, ‘Petrified’, ‘It (that is not to be named)’, and finished off their excellent set in the old 2024 version with the famous ‘Dagon’. It’s a real pleasure, then, to be able to see these builders of the French death metal scene again, bringing back to life the memorable moments they offered their fans during the precursory period of Death Metal in our beloved land of cheese and wine. Dagon was the perfect opener for this evening dedicated to old school death metal. It was a real privilege to be able to see them, or to see them again, sending out the same rage and energy as when they first started out, with a whole host of heavy, aggressive tracks that would seduce even the most purist of the genre. Dagon have risen from the ashes and are once again ready to set our sweet brains on fire!

So now we’re stirring the pot of French death, digging even deeper like you’d rummage through old bins at your local record shop. We’ve picked up a fresh gem in the shape of Agressor, fronted by Alex Colin-Tocquaine and his band of furious hairy fools. Formed in Antibes in 1986, no less, and having chosen the North of France as their final destination, it was with great pleasure that we were once again able to put our ears to the delicate (irony when you hold us…) music offered by Agressor. The band’s name alone is enough to make you lose an eye, so much so that it stings in direct frontal uppercut mode. And that’s exactly what we love about them, the executive speed and instant effect of their riffs. They’re right in the thrash death vein, bordering on good old-fashioned dirty crossover that smacks of the 80s, when thrash and crossover were cousins. Their songs are a succession of absolutely wicked guitar riffs, sprinkled with deliciously acidic, brutal vocals that pick you up and roast you on the spot like buns in a hot oven. You burn alive like spontaneous combustion and we love it, perfect for setting fire to this thrash death evening already well under way. Their set was skilfully crafted from everything Agressor fans have come to expect, kicking off with ‘When Darkness’, followed by ‘Bloodshed’, ‘God From The Sky’, ‘The Sorcerer’, ‘Deathreat’, ‘Warrior Heart’, ‘Hyaloid’, ‘Eldest Things’, ‘Paralytic Disease’, ‘Overloaded’, ‘Rebirth’ and ‘Someone To Eat’. Twelve gems in all that will have rekindled the flame of the very beginnings of French Thrash Death, at a time when Agressor, Loudblast and so many others were sharing the bill to better ignite the boards of this scene that will have marked the history of French death metal.

Now we leave France to cross the sky and the sea and arrive in the USA with Incantation led by John McEntee and his acolytes. After the speed of Agressor, who gave us the hot sauce, we needed a little cavernous rest before being literally sucked into the swampy depths of Incantation’s impeccable doom-tinged death. Our four friends formed at the very end of the 80s, in August 1989 to be precise, during the glorious hours of death, in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. It’s a nice way of sending us off to Saturn to celebrate 35 years in the business, no less. The magic of Incantation lies in the element of surprise. With their ability to switch from razor-sharp speed to sudden, massive heaviness, you won’t get old with them. The monumental brutality they unleash on us is second to none, so incomparably and above all perfectly in tune with the purest roots of American death metal. But their most demented originality lies just as much in their prowess on the fretboard, doubled by a jerky, in-your-face rhythm section, as in their cadaverous slowness, flirting with a good old Night of the Living Dead by A. Romero. Because as soon as the tempo slows down, you can feel a sinuous sludge rushing into your guts, grabbing you and making you crumble under a weight that’s crushing, but at the same time so satisfying. Our warriors of the underworld kicked off their show with ‘Carrion Prophecy’ as the opening track, followed by ‘Shadows of the Ancient Empire’, ‘Concordat (The Pact) I’, ‘Vanquish in Vengeance’ and ‘Fury’s Manifesto’, ‘Offerings (The Swarm) IV’, “Blasphemous Cremation”, “Invocation (Chthonic Merge) X”, “Blissful Bloodshower”, “Unholy Massacre”, “Essence Ablaze”, “The Ibex Moon”, and to round off this magnificent, colourful show, “Impending Diabolical Conquest”. For the finale, what better than a tribute band to the excellent and above all cult Death, formed in the very early 80s, in 1984 in Altamonte Springs, Florida and led by a true icon of the genre, I’m talking about Mister Chuck Schuldiner himself. And for this, I’ve named Left to Die, a tribute band to the inescapable Death with a miracle recipe by dipping right into the demented cauldron and bringing us their best recipe, that of former members of the death scene paying tribute to Death. Digging deep into the first period of Death‘s discography, they treated us to a fine selection of their cult tracks from 1987’s Scream Bloody Gore, as well as the 1988 album Leprosy in its entirety. With Matt Harvey (Exhumed, Gruesome) on vocals, Rick Rozz (ex-Death) on guitar, Terry Butler (Obituary, ex-Death) on bass, and Gus Rios (Gruesome) on drums, what could be cooler than having the privilege and opportunity to hear Death songs by former Death members as well as all those involved in the American death metal scene? There were plenty of people in the audience at The Black Lab to catch the Left to Die show and relive the incredible moments that Death shared with us in their early days, a band that left its mark on the American death metal scene, leading the Floridian scene as the spearhead of the genre. Everything was there: chiselled and perfectly played bass and guitar riffs, insane rhythms and aggressive vocals, as close as possible to Chuck Schuldiner‘s while retaining Matt Harvey‘s distinctive touch. What could be more beautiful for this magnificent tribute to Death than the result of this aural perfection incarnate. Left to Die kicked off their set with Alice Cooper‘s ‘Hello Hooray’, a fine nod to the man in the black hat and leather gloves, icon of the hard rock scene, before plunging us into much deeper darkness. Twelve absolutely cult Death tracks followed, starting with ‘Leprosy’, then ‘Born Dead’, ‘Forgotten Past’, ‘Infernal Death’, ‘Sacrificial’, ‘Open Casket’, ‘Primitive Ways’, ‘Choke on It’, ‘Torn to Pieces’, ‘Regurgitated Guts’, ‘Left to Die’, and finally the admirable ‘Zombie Ritual’. It was a pleasure, or rather a real pleasure, to be able to attend this tribute show to Death by Left to Die, who thrilled us for over an hour, offering us a living nightmare, the one into which Chuck Schuldiner plunged us during his youth and left his mark on our tortured young minds.
