Après deux albums, dont Voice of the Void (2016) ayant reçu un JUNO Award, les canadiens de ANCIIENTS ont malheureusement du se retirer du devant de la scène pour raisons familiales. En cette fin d’été 2024, et après un changement de line-up les voilà de retour avec un troisième album. Il aura fallu 8 ans à Beyond The Reach Of The Sun pour voir le jour et on a hâte de se plonger dans l’écoute de ce nouvel opus du groupe prog métal de Colombie-Britannique. L’album sera disponible le 30 août prochain via Season Of Mist.

Les quatre musiciens nous font rentrer en douceur sur cet album avec une belle montée en tension sur « Forbidden Sanctuary », où les guitares de Kenny Cook et Brock MacInnes se joignent dans une mélodie majestueuse avant que les riffs ne prennent le dessus et que batterie et basse viennent se lancer de plus belle dans un morceau bien énergique qui montré déjà le grand talent de composition du groupe canadien. Leur prog métal est redoutable et viens réveiller dans nos esprits des références à des artistes qu’on apprécie énormément, mais tout en gardant cette pate unique qui les démarque. Le section rythmique portée par Rory O’Brien à la basse et Mike Hannay à la batterie nous enchante avec des variations allant d’un son massif à des sonorités très prog qui cohabitent avec aisance souvent dans le même morceau. Kenny nous livre également une performance vocale qui ne laisse pas de marbre, alternant entre un chant clair et hurlé sans effort. C’est simple sur des titres comme « Despoiled » par exemple on se croit tout droit descendu vers un monde inhospitalier alors que « Is It Your God » vient proposer plus de nuances avec même la présence de claviers très 70’s en fin de morceaux qu’on doit à Justin Hagberg.
La véritable force du groupe réside dans cette capacité à brouiller les pistes entre prog métal dévastateur et influences beaucoup plus rock, tout en gardant cette envie de nous transmettre un émotion forte quelque soit le chemin choisi. Les canadiens réussissent un tour de force qui ne se dément pas tout au long de l’écoute. La douceur sombre de l’intro de « Cloak of the Vast and Black » avant l’explosion très prog est une des véritables pépites de l’album. On se croirait presque dans un titre des suédois de Opeth, mais avec l’identité de ANCIIENTS qui prédomine clairement. Cet album regorge d’inventivité tout en offrant au public un prog métal taillé pour la scène. On se voit parfaitement profiter d’un titre comme « Beyond Our Minds » lors d’un concert du groupe.
La fin d’album vient proposer plusieurs titres un peu plus courts que sur le reste de l’album. Mais ne pensez pas que les canadiens vont vous ménager avec un son moins massif ou moins technique, il n’en est rien. La clôture sur « In The Absence Of Wisdom » offre une toute dernière pépite qui renforce notre envie de relancer l’album de suite, avec toujours ce parfait équilibre qu’on a retrouvé tout au long de notre voyage musical.
Avec Beyond The Reach Of The Sun, ANCIIENTS signent un retour sur le devant de la scène en fanfare! L’album regorge de morceaux tous plus prenants les uns que les autres qui sauront au fil des écoutes livrer toujours plus de secrets et d’émotions. Le quatuor canadien montre que les années de travail et de repos ont clairement renforce leur envie de revenir plus forts, et c’est très réussi. Cette sortie vient clairement chambouler le top de l’année et on espère vivement qu’une tournée européenne verra le jour sous peu, pour pouvoir découvrir le prog métal du groupe en live! Un album à aller découvrir au plus vite!

At the end of the summer of 2024, after a line-up change, they’re back with a third album. It took 8 years for Beyond The Reach Of The Sun to see the light of day, and we can’t wait to listen to this new opus from the British Columbia prog metal band. The album will be available on August 30th via Season Of Mist.
The four musicians take us gently into the album with a fine build-up of tension on ‘Forbidden Sanctuary’, where Kenny Cook and Brock MacInnes’s guitars join forces in a majestic melody before the riffs take over and the drums and bass kick into high gear in a high-energy track that already shows off the Canadian band’s great songwriting talent. Their prog-metal is formidable and awakens in our minds references to artists we greatly appreciate, while retaining that unique pate that sets them apart. The rhythm section, led by Rory O’Brien on bass and Mike Hannay on drums, enchants us with variations ranging from a massive sound to very prog tones, which often coexist with ease in the same song. Kenny also delivers a vocal performance that leaves you breathless, alternating effortlessly between clear and screamed vocals. On tracks like ‘Despoiled’, for example, it’s easy to feel as though you’ve been plunged straight into an inhospitable world, whereas ‘Is It Your God’ offers more nuance, with Justin Hagberg adding some very 70s-style keyboards at the end.
The band’s real strength lies in their ability to blur the lines between devastating prog metal and much more rock influences, while retaining their desire to convey a strong emotion, whichever way they choose. It’s a tour de force that the Canadians pull off time and time again. The sombre softness of the intro to ‘Cloak of the Vast and Black’ before the very prog explosion is one of the album’s real nuggets. It’s almost like listening to a track by Sweden’s Opeth, but with the ANCIIENTS identity clearly predominating. This album is bursting with inventiveness, while offering the audience prog metal made for the stage. A track like ‘Beyond Our Minds’ is a perfect match for a concert by the band.
The end of the album features several tracks that are a little shorter than on the rest of the album. But don’t think that the Canadians are going to spare you with a less massive or less technical sound, it’s nothing of the sort. The closing track, ‘In The Absence Of Wisdom’, is a final nugget that reinforces our desire to relaunch the album straight away, with the perfect balance we’ve found throughout our musical journey.
With Beyond The Reach Of The Sun, ANCIIENTS return to the front of the stage with a bang! The album is packed with tracks, each one more gripping than the last, and each one revealing more secrets and emotions than the last. The Canadian quartet show that years of work and rest have clearly strengthened their desire to come back stronger, and they’ve succeeded. This release has clearly shaken up the year’s chart-toppers, and we can’t wait for a European tour to get underway soon, so we can discover the band’s prog metal live! An album to be discovered as soon as possible!
