[Rattrapage d’été] Cinquième album studio du groupe originaire du Massachusetts, As aboven so below sonne le retour au source de la part du quintet revenant à un son plus “blues” dont le groupe avait introduit sur leur premier EP et sur Mister Asylum. Highly suspect nous ont livré en ce 19 juillet un bel album pour prendre la route des vacances via Roadrunner Records.

Après avoir perdu pas mal de fan sur l’enchaînement MCID et The Midnight Demon Club , la tâche est assez ardue pour Highly Suspect d’aller reconquérir ses fans au vue de l’échec qu’a été le dernier album en témoigne les résultats des charts par rapport au précédent. L’album s’ouvre avec ce fameux retour au source du rock peut être un peu caricatural avec “Summer Voodoo” et “Suicide Machine”. Bruit de moto, mentalité “live fast die young” dans les deux titres qui sentent la poussière des terrains de l’Arizona. On s’attendait peut être à une évolution du sujet pour Johnny Stevens qui a fait du chemin depuis “Bath Salt”. Il a toujours posé sur le papier ses problèmes personnels que ce soit sur “16” et ici sur “The Blue-eyed Devil” voyage entre egotrip et gestion de la solitude vis à vis de ses parents.
En sortira de cet album, les morceaux les plus calmes étrangement, avec “The 8th of October (To August 17th)” ou encore “Melatonia” qui est un clin d’oeil à “Serotonia“ présente sur The Boy Who Died Wolf. Cette chanson de l’album présente beaucoup de changement de rythme soulignant une recherche de complexité et de profondeur. L’aspect lent de la chanson contraste assez avec le reste de l’album et permet vraiment de ressentir le titre comme il se doit.
Nous avons aussi un petit lot d’étrangetés comme “The Reset”. La rythmique et titre qui aurait pu sortir à l’époque de l’EP Highly Suspect bon bridge dans l’album où chacun laisse exprimer son instrument. Ainsi que « Then, Mickey 2 », autre clin d’oeil et réinterprétation de “Then Mickey” présent sur la compil Highly Suspect
Au final As above so below reste un bon album pour l’été et réussi là où The Midnight Demon Club avait pêché. Le retour au source va permettre de rattacher les wagons avec les fans de l’ancien son de Highly Suspect. Il semble malheureusement un peu tard pour rattraper la trajectoire qui leur était promise avec The Boy Who Died Wolf.

[Summer Catch-Up] The fifth studio album from the Massachusetts-based band, As Above So Below marks a return to the roots for the quintet, returning to the more bluesy sound they introduced on their debut EP and Mister Asylum. On July 19, Highly suspect have delivered a fine album to get us on the road for the vacations via Roadrunner Records.
After losing quite a few fans with MCID and The Midnight Demon Club, Highly Suspect‘s task of winning back their fans is a daunting one, given the failure of their last album, as evidenced by the chart results compared with their previous one. The album opens with “Summer Voodoo” and “Suicide Machine”, that famous return to rock roots that may be a little caricatured. Motorcycle noises and a “live fast die young” mentality in these two tracks, which smell of dusty Arizona fields. Perhaps an evolution of subject matter was expected from Johnny Stevens, who has come a long way since “Bath Salt”. He has always put his personal problems down on paper, both on “16” and here on “The Blue-eyed Devil”, a journey between egotrip and dealing with the loneliness of his parents.
The album’s quietest tracks are “The 8th of October (To August 17th)” and “Melatonia”, a nod to “Serotonia” on The Boy Who Died Wolf. This song on the album features many changes of rhythm, underlining a search for complexity and depth. The slow aspect of the song contrasts with the rest of the album, and really allows you to feel the track as it should be.
We also have a small batch of oddities like “The Reset”. This rhythmic track, which could have been released on the Highly Suspect EP, is a good bridge to the album, where everyone lets their instruments express themselves. And “Then, Mickey 2”, another wink and reinterpretation of “Then Mickey” from the Highly Suspect compilation.
All in all, As Above So Below is a good album for summer, and succeeds where The Midnight Demon Club failed. The return to the source will allow fans of the old Highly Suspect sound to catch up. Unfortunately, it seems a little late to catch up with the trajectory that was promised them with The Boy Who Died Wolf.
