Nous avons découvert Kid Bookie au printemps dernier à l’Olympia à Paris, où il a fait la première partie de I Prevail. Aujourd’hui, il s’apprête à sortir son cinquième album SONGS FOR THE LIVING // SONGS FOR THE DEAD le 13 septembre sur Marshall Records. Après avoir goûté à son mélange unique de rock, de hip-hop, de métal et de pop, nous étions plus que curieux de savoir ce que cet album allait nous apporter !

L’album démarre avec le titre « AI (Save Yourself) », qui s’ouvre sur un son d’alarme créant une atmosphère angoissante avant que Kid Bookie n’entre en scène avec une mélodie chantée, puis passe à un flow hip-hop efficace. C’est une introduction puissante, qui met en évidence les diverses influences qui façonnent son son distinctif. Après une chanson remplie d’éléments électro et de riffs de guitare, « Purgatory » prend une tournure surprenante, avec une mélodie acoustique portée par la voix, une guitare douce et de légères notes de xylophone.

La douceur se poursuit avec « Nothing To Believe In », un titre marquant qui reste dans les mémoires tant la voix de Kid Bookie transmet une émotion et une douleur palpables. L’album comprend également plusieurs interludes, et « Interlude 1 » offre un bref mais parfait aperçu du côté plus heavy que nous n’avions pas encore entendu, avec des riffs de guitare épais qui mènent sans transition à « Scars ». Le tempo lent de ce morceau contraste fortement avec le flow rapide de Kid Bookie, mettant en avant sa polyvalence.

Après un autre interlude acoustique, l’album passe à « DOWN MY FRIEND », un titre qui ressemble à une berceuse avec des voix intimes qui deviennent plus dynamiques vers la fin, nous laissant sur notre faim. L’énergie change à nouveau lorsque nous entrons dans la phase pop-punk de l’album avec « Love Drunk “ et ” Love Me When You’re Angry », ce dernier évoquant un son rappelant Stand Atlantic. Enfin, nous revenons aux racines hip-hop de Kid Bookie avec « You Only See », qui mêle le rap à des moments mélodiques et chantés.

Après la performance très énergique à laquelle nous avons assisté en concert, je m’attendais à quelque chose d’un peu plus rapide, avec quelques titres qui font headbanger ou des moments plus propices à la danse. Cependant, SONGS FOR THE LIVING // SONGS FOR THE DEAD offre une vue d’ensemble de la palette musicale de Kid Bookie. Bien que l’on puisse avoir l’impression qu’il y a beaucoup de choses à faire, l’album montre sa capacité à mélanger les genres avec précision, créant ainsi quelque chose d’unique en son genre. Le mélange d’émotions brutes, d’expérimentations mélodiques et de paroles acérées révèle un véritable talent, et bien qu’il nous laisse sur notre faim avec quelques chansons plus contagieuses et énergiques, il est clair que Kid Bookie est un artiste qui a beaucoup plus à offrir, mais qui a choisi, cette fois-ci, de mettre en avant son côté le plus doux.

We discovered Kid Bookie this spring at L’Olympia in Paris, where he opened for I Prevail. Now, he’s set to release his fifth album SONGS FOR THE LIVING // SONGS FOR THE DEAD on September 13th via Marshall Records. After experiencing his unique blend of rock, hip-hop, metal, and pop elements, we were more than curious about what this release would bring!

The album kicks off with the track “AI (Save Yourself),” opening with an alarm sound that creates an anxious atmosphere before Kid Bookie enters with a sung melody and then switches to an efficient hip-hop flow. It’s a powerful introduction, showcasing the diverse influences that shape his distinctive sound. Following a song filled with electro elements and guitar riffs, “Purgatory” takes a surprising turn, featuring an acoustic melody driven by voice, soft guitar, and light xylophone notes.

The softer vibe continues with “Nothing To Believe In,” a standout track that lingers in your mind as Kid Bookie’s voice conveys palpable emotion and pain. The album also includes several interludes, and “Interlude 1” offers a brief yet perfect glimpse into the heavier side we hadn’t yet heard, with chunky guitar riffs leading seamlessly into “Scars.” The slow tempo of this track contrasts sharply with Kid Bookie’s rapid-fire flow, highlighting his versatility.

After another acoustic interlude, the album moves to “DOWN MY FRIEND,” a lullaby-like track with intimate vocals that grow more dynamic towards the end, leaving us wanting more. The energy shifts again as we enter the pop-punk phase of the album with “Love Drunk” and “Love Me When You’re Angry,” the latter evoking a sound reminiscent of Stand Atlantic. Finally, we return to Kid Bookie’s hip-hop roots with “You Only See,” which blends rap with melodic, sung moments.

After the high-energy performance we saw in concert, I expected something a bit more fast-paced—something with a few headbanging tracks or more dance-worthy moments. However, SONGS FOR THE LIVING // SONGS FOR THE DEAD offers a comprehensive view of Kid Bookie’s musical range. While it might feel like there’s a lot going on, the album showcases his ability to blend genres with precision, creating something one of a kind. The mix of raw emotion, melodic experiments, and sharp lyricism reveals a true talent, and though it leaves us wanting a few more infectious, high-energy songs, it’s clear that Kid Bookie is an artist with a lot more to offer but chose, this time, to lean on his softer side.
