Half Me, groupe allemand de Hambourg revient en ce 27 septembre avec l’EP Opium suite au succès de leur dernier album Soma. Après une percée avec un featuring de Jack Bergin de Void of Vision et une nomination au Heavy Music Award 2024, les allemands signés chez Arising Empire nous emmène pour cinq titres remplis de riffs entre metalcore modern et djent.

Après une intro d’une minute cinquante cinq “Concrete Ceiling”, la formation nous emmène sur un terrain que nous connaissons bien voir trop bien. On comprend de suite qu’on nous dise que cette sortie peut plaire aux fans de Graphic Nature au vu des riffs et ambiance souhaitée sur cet EP. Avec quatre titres déjà sortis il n’y a malheureusement pas de grande surprise. Half Me semble avoir une approche assez nihiliste avec cet EP comme peut le souligner les titres comme “Quitter Talk” où Christopher nous narre la vision d’une personne addict dans l’optique où même si on essaye de s’en sortir la vie toujours trop compliqué et le Quitter va retomber dans son addiction. On peut aussi retrouver ce même discours sur la chanson “Fatalist” où le titre parle de lui-même.

D’un point de vue purement musical, l’ensemble du projet se tient dans un modern metalcore avec des nuances de djent bien maîtrisées. On soulignera les bons breakdown à la fin de “Quitter talk” où on peut y retrouver pas mal d’effets de jeu au niveau du guitariste qui rend le break assez singulier. Comme pas mal de groupes du genre, on retrouve une bonne palette de voix saturées entre fry et false screaming.

 Half Me avec cet EP ne révolutionne pas le genre mais continue dans leur bonne lancée déjà remarquée par la critique. Leur souhaitant le meilleur pour la fin de leur tournée américaine avec Oceano et VCTMS.

Half Me, the German band from Hamburg, are back on 27 September with the Opium EP, following on from the success of their last album, Soma. After a breakthrough featuring Jack Bergin of Void of Vision and a nomination for the Heavy Music Award 2024, the Germans signed to Arising Empire take us on a five-track journey full of riffs between modern metalcore and djent.

After a one-and-a-half minute intro to ‘Concrete Ceiling’, the band take us into territory we know well, if not too well. It’s easy to see why we’ve been told that Graphic Nature fans might find this release so appealing, given the riffs and ambience on this EP. With four tracks already released, there are unfortunately no big surprises here. Half Me seem to have taken a rather nihilistic approach with this EP, as can be seen from tracks such as ‘Quitter Talk’, where Christopher narrates the vision of an addict from the point of view that even if you try to get out of it, life is always too complicated and the Quitter will fall back into his addiction. We can also find this same discourse on the song ‘Fatalist’ where the title speaks for itself.

From a purely musical point of view, the whole project sticks to modern metalcore with well-mastered djent nuances. There’s a good breakdown at the end of ‘Quitter talk’, where the guitarist’s playing effects make the break quite distinctive. As with many bands in this genre, there’s a good range of saturated vocals, from fry to false screaming.

With this EP, Half Me aren’t revolutionising the genre, but they’re keeping up the good momentum they’ve already established with the critics. Wishing them all the best for the end of their American tour with Oceano and VCTMS.
