Parfois il y a des soirées parisiennes qu’on ne peut décemment pas manquer, et cette première tournée An Evening With… de Haken en est clairement une! Le principe de ces soirées: deux sets permettant à la formation anglaise de nous proposer une large part de sa discographie. Au programme un set où Fauna, le dernier album en date sera joué en entier, puis un second set sous forme de best of, de quoi ravir les fans. Direction le beau théâtre de l’Alhambra, en configuration assise ce soir, pour un concert qui s’annonce de haute volée. Un concert proposé par Veryshow qui mettent les petits plats dans les grands ce soir!

Après avoir été accueillis dans la salle par une playlist très jazzy et pleine de petits clins d’œil à Fauna avec par exemple des morceaux de la BO du Livre de La Jungle, les lumières s’éteignent et l’intro se lance laissant petit à petit apparaître Haken sur scène. On part donc pour un album entier dans l’ordre et on commence fort avec le morceau « Taurus ». D’entrée, on se prend en pleine face la qualité des lumières et du son proposé par les anglais ce soir. Ross Jennings est dans une forme olympique et semble clairement ravi d’être de retour à Paris. Il nous lâche ses meilleures lignes de chant tout en dansant, ce qui s’apparente clairement à une véritable performance tant les changements rythmiques sont nombreux. L’album sorti l’an dernier prend une véritable dimension supplémentaire en live, et le jeu des musiciens y est pour beaucoup. Peter Jones nous enchante avec ses parties de claviers sur « The Alphabet Of Me » ou « Beneath The White Rainbow ». La communion entre le public et le groupe est totale et on voit les fans reprendre paroles en chœur et faire du air batterie au grand bonheur des musiciens anglais. Ross nous annonce une chanson d’amour métal avec l’excellent et très rapide « Lovebites » avant de se lancer dans le majestueux « Elephants Never Forget » qui laisse Richard Henshall et Charles Griffiths nous jouer des riffs déjà bien encrés dans nos mémoires. On clôt cette interprétation de Fauna avec « Eyes Of Ebony » qui reste un des titres les plus puissants de cet album. Pour clôturer cette première partie de concert en beauté, le groupe nous propose « Crystallised », morceau fleuve d’une vingtaine de minutes qui a dans ses moments inoubliables un chant en canon magnifiquement interprété par tout le groupe. On ne pouvait rêver plus belle fin de premier set et on part prendre une petite pause dans les couloirs prêts pour la suite de nos aventures dans le monde prog des anglais.
Les anglais ont décidé de ne pas nous ménager pour le retour sur scène et lancent les hostilités avec « Puzzle Box » et son riff dévastateur. Sur « Earthrise » Raymond Hearne à la batterie et Conner Green à la basse nous proposent une section rythmique des plus réussies, qui donne encore l’occasion au public de faire marcher son compteur de mesures pour headbanger en cadence. Arrive ensuite le cultissime « Cockroach King » et sa partie en canon magistrale. Le groupe maîtrise clairement ce type d’harmonies et c’est une plaisir d’entendre ce titre mythique en live de nouveau. Après l’instrumental « Nil By Mouth » qui laisse les musiciens prendre le devant de la scène une fois de plus, nous voilà repartis dans un monde rempli de claviers bien rétros avec « 1985 ». Le morceau voit d’ailleurs Ross débarquer sur scène avec une casquette aux couleurs de l’album Affinity! Sur le titre suivant, Raymond et Peter nous offrent un superbe double solo claviers/batterie du plus bel effet. On est aux anges tant le set des anglais est d’une qualité folle. On arrive déjà vers la fin de cette deuxième partie mais il reste « Drowning In The Flood » pour terminer de mettre tout le monde d’accord. Le groupe revient sur scène après de longs applaudissements d’un public conquis pour une nouvelle pièce de choix avec « Visions », morceau titre de leur album de 2011. Autant vous dire que toutes les personnes présentes dans la salle sont ravies de terminer la soirée avec un morceau si iconique. Les musiciens donnent tout une dernière fois et remercient une fois de plus le public pour l’accueil si chaleureux.
Cette première tournée An Evening With Haken a clairement tenue ses promesses. Les anglais ont livré une performance magistrale qui a confirmé leur place au panthéon du prog métal. Leur discographie regorge de tubes en puissance et nous en avons eu ce soir une belle démonstration. On quitte l’Alhambra conquis par cette belle soirée de musique et prêt à remettre ça au plus vite !

Sometimes there are Parisian nights you just can’t miss, and Haken’s first An Evening With… tour is clearly one of them! The idea behind these evenings is to give the English band two sets to showcase a large part of their discography. On the programme: one set featuring Fauna, the latest album to date, played in its entirety, followed by a second set in the form of a best of, guaranteed to delight fans. Head to the beautiful Alhambra theatre, in seated configuration this evening, for what promises to be a high-flying concert. A concert brought to you by Veryshow, who are pulling out all the stops tonight!

After being welcomed into the room by a jazzy playlist full of nods to Fauna, including tracks from The Jungle Book soundtrack, the lights went down and the intro began, gradually bringing Haken on stage. So we’re off for an entire album in order, and we start off strong with the track ‘Taurus’. From the outset, the quality of the lighting and sound provided by the English band this evening is a sight to behold. Ross Jennings is in top form and clearly delighted to be back in Paris. He let loose his best vocal lines while dancing, which was clearly a real performance with so many rhythmic changes. The album released last year takes on a real extra dimension live, and the musicians’ playing has a lot to do with it. Peter Jones enchanted us with his keyboard parts on ‘The Alphabet Of Me’ and ‘Beneath The White Rainbow’. There was total communion between the audience and the band, with the fans singing along to the lyrics and air-drumming to the great delight of the English musicians. Ross announces a metal love song with the excellent, fast-paced ‘Lovebites’ before launching into the majestic ‘Elephants Never Forget’, which lets Richard Henshall and Charles Griffiths play riffs that are already well ingrained in our memories. We close this Fauna performance with ‘Eyes Of Ebony’, which remains one of the most powerful tracks on this album. To bring the first half of the concert to a fitting close, the band played ‘Crystallised’, a twenty-minute long track whose unforgettable moments included a canon-like song performed magnificently by the whole band. We couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful end to the first set, so we took a short break in the corridors, ready for the next part of our adventures in the English prog world.
The English band decided not to spare us on their return to the stage and kicked off the hostilities with ‘Puzzle Box’ and its devastating riff. On ‘Earthrise’, Raymond Hearne on drums and Conner Green on bass put on a great rhythm section, giving the crowd another chance to get their meters up and headbanging. Then comes the cult classic ‘Cockroach King’ and its masterful canon section. The band have clearly mastered this type of harmony, and it’s a pleasure to hear this legendary song live again. After the instrumental ‘Nil By Mouth’, which lets the musicians take centre stage once again, we’re back in a world full of retro keyboards with ‘1985’. The track also sees Ross take to the stage wearing a cap in the colours of the Affinity album! On the next track, Raymond and Peter played a superb double solo on keyboards and drums. We’re over the moon with the quality of the English band’s set. We’re already nearing the end of the second half, but there’s still ‘Drowning In The Flood’ to finish everyone off. The band return to the stage after a long round of applause from a conquered audience for another choice piece with ‘Visions’, the title track from their 2011 album. Needless to say, everyone in the room is delighted to end the evening with such an iconic track. The musicians give it their all one last time and once again thank the audience for such a warm welcome.
This first An Evening With Haken tour clearly lived up to its promise. The English band delivered a masterful performance that confirmed their place in the pantheon of prog metal. Their discography is packed with potential hits, and tonight was a fine demonstration of that. We left the Alhambra conquered by this beautiful evening of music and ready to do it again as soon as possible!
