En ce début octobre, le Zénith de Lille accueillait le show One Night Of Queen, mené par Gary Mullen & The Works. Auréolé d’une excellente réputation scénique, il nous tardait de pouvoir enfin découvrir ce spectacle hommage à Queen existant depuis 2001. Direction donc une des plus grandes salles de la métropole lilloise pour une soirée de tubes intemporels.

La scène est prête dès notre entrée dans la salle, en effet pas de première partie ce soir mais un set en deux parties. Les rouages en fond de scène s’activent lors de l’intro pendant que les musiciens montent sur scène suivis de près par Gary Mullen habillé comme Freddie Mercury. Ce dernier, a gagné il y a cela de nombreuses années un concours de talents et nous montre dès « Tear It Up » qu’il sait habiter la scène aussi bien que l’illustre chanteur de Queen. Vocalement l’illusion est parfaite et le riff de « Tie Your Mother Down » vient définitivement réveiller une salle où peu de places n’ont pas trouvé preneur. Notre étonnement vient des sièges installés dans la fosse, surtout quand on voit que dès le premier titre une grande partie du public se lève pour se rapprocher au plus près des artistes. Après un « Under Pressure » repris en chœur par tout le public lillois, notre hôte nous remercie une première fois pour l’accueil chaleureux. Les lumières magistrales, spécialement conçues pour rappeler celles de Queen, habillent parfaitement la prestation de David Brockett, absolument impérial à la guitare. Evidemment la fête est totale sur « Don’t Stop Me Now » avant que les musiciens nous offrent un joli mash up de « Killer Queen » et « Bicycle Race », morceaux qu’on est ravi d’entendre ce soir. Il est temps pour Alan McGeoch de faire résonner la légendaire ligne de basse de « Another One Bites The Dust » au grand plaisir du public qui applaudit à tout rompre. La prestation est clairement à la hauteur de nos attentes et Gary Mullen et son bassiste nous font revivre de la plus belle des manières les prestations de légende de Freddie Mercury et John Deacon. Sur « I Want To Break Free », le chanteur revient après un cour passage en coulisse affublé d’un costume en tout point identique à celui du chanteur anglais dans le clip d’origine. Suivent les légendaires « Ay-Oh » repris une fois de plus par un public aux anges. David Brockett se lancera ensuite dans un sublime solo de guitare avant que « Hammer To Fall » et son riff imparable ne vienne clôturer de la plus belle des manières cette première partie de la soirée. Nous partons prendre une petite pause, tout comme le groupe pour revenir prêts pour la seconde partie du show.
C’est au son de « Flash » que le groupe débarque de nouveau sur scène avant que Malcolm Gentles ne vienne lancer « Seven Seas Of Rhye » avec son piano. Le chanteur devra malheureusement demander au public de profiter du moment plutôt que de filmer une grande partie des morceaux de la soirée. Une fois de plus Gary est en forme olympique et bouge dans tous les sens sur scène tout en chantant à merveille ces chansons de légende. Voilà venu le temps de rendre hommages aux femmes avec « Fat Bottomed Girls », chanson plus que bienvenue dans ce monde où le physique des femmes est scruté et critiqué de toute part. Jon Halliwell a lui aussi le droit à son solo à la batterie après une soirée où se prestation aurait clairement rendu fière Roger Taylor. Il est temps de parler d’amour avec « Love Of My Life » qui vient coller des frissons à toute la salle. Puis le morceau mythique « Bohemian Rhapsody » vienne confirmer, s’il le fallait encore que Gary Mullen & The Works méritent toute notre admiration! « Radio Gaga » vient faire chanter tout le public une fois de plus avant que Gary nous présente ses musiciens et remercie toutes les équipes sur un mash up de « Barracuda » et « Jailhouse Rock ». On sent que la soirée arrive bientôt à son terme mais le groupe termine en beauté avec « Crazy Little Thing Called Love » et sa guitare acoustique. Après des applaudissements fournis, toute la troupe débarque une dernière fois sur scène pour « Show Must Go On » avant de terminer cette soirée avec l’enchaînement mythique de « We Will Rock You » et son rythme frappé par un Zénith de Lille en fusion et l’hymne des stades, j’ai nommé « We Are The Champions ». Sur ces derniers titres Gary n’hésitera pas à s’entourer d’un gigantesque drapeau français en disant merci une nouvelle fois au public pour cet accueil si chaleureux. Nous quittons la salle époustouflés par ce concert parfait de bout en bout et cette performance qui rend parfaitement hommage à la légende du groupe anglais. On vous encourage vivement à aller découvrir One Night Of Queen by Gary Mullen & The Works sur scène tant le spectacle est total!

At the beginning of October, the Zénith in Lille played host to the One Night Of Queen show, led by Gary Mullen & The Works. With their excellent stage reputation, we couldn’t wait to finally discover this tribute to Queen, which has been around since 2001. So we headed to one of Lille’s biggest venues for an evening of timeless hits.

The stage was set as soon as we entered the venue, as there would be no support act tonight but a two-part set. The cogs at the back of the stage kicked in during the intro as the musicians took to the stage, closely followed by Gary Mullen dressed like Freddie Mercury. The latter, who won a talent contest many years ago, shows us from ‘Tear It Up’ that he knows how to inhabit the stage just as well as Queen‘s illustrious singer. Vocally, the illusion was perfect and the riff of ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ was a definite wake-up call for a venue where few seats had been taken. We were surprised by the seats in the pit, especially when we saw that as soon as the first song was played a large part of the audience stood up to get as close as possible to the artists. After a chorus of ‘Under Pressure’ from the entire Lille audience, our host thanked us once again for the warm welcome. The masterful lighting, specially designed to resemble that of Queen, perfectly suited the performance of David Brockett, absolutely imperial on guitar. Don’t Stop Me Now’ obviously gets the party going, before the musicians give us a nice mash-up of “Killer Queen” and “Bicycle Race”, songs we’re delighted to hear tonight. It was time for Alan McGeoch to bring out the legendary bass line of ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ to the delight of the audience, who applauded wildly. The performance clearly lived up to our expectations, with Gary Mullen and his bassist bringing back to life the legendary performances of Freddie Mercury and John Deacon in the best possible way. On ‘I Want To Break Free’ the singer returns after a short stint backstage wearing a suit identical in every way to that of the English singer in the original video. This was followed by the legendary ‘Ay-Oh’, which was once again taken up by an ecstatic audience. David Brockett then launched into a sublime guitar solo before ‘Hammer To Fall’, with its unstoppable riff, brought the first half of the evening to a fitting close. We take a short break, as do the band, and come back ready for the second half of the show.
The band took to the stage again to the sound of ‘Flash’, before Malcolm Gentles launched into ‘Seven Seas Of Rhye’ with his piano. Unfortunately, the singer had to ask the audience to enjoy the moment rather than film most of the evening’s songs. Once again Gary was in top form, moving around the stage and singing these legendary songs. It was time to pay tribute to women with ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’, a very welcome song in a world where women’s physique is scrutinised and criticised from all sides. Jon Halliwell also gets his drum solo after an evening when his performance would clearly have made Roger Taylor proud. It’s time to talk about love with ‘Love Of My Life’, which sends shivers down the spine of the entire room. Then the legendary song ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ confirmed, if confirmation were needed, that Gary Mullen & The Works deserve all our admiration! ‘Radio Gaga’ got the whole audience singing along once more before Gary introduced his musicians and thanked all the teams with a mash-up of “Barracuda” and “Jailhouse Rock”. The evening seemed to be drawing to a close, but the band ended on a high note with ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ and its acoustic guitar. After a rousing round of applause, the whole band took to the stage one last time for ‘Show Must Go On’, before ending the evening with the legendary sequence of ‘We Will Rock You’ and its rhythm struck by a melting Zénith in Lille, and the stadium anthem, ‘We Are The Champions’. On these last tracks Gary did not hesitate to surround himself with a gigantic French flag, once again thanking the audience for such a warm welcome. We left the venue blown away by this concert, which was perfect from start to finish, and this performance, which was a perfect tribute to the legend of the English band. We urge you to go and see One Night Of Queen by Gary Mullen & The Works live, it’s a total spectacle!
