Depuis notre découverte du groupe allemand Gewalt lors d’un concert mémorable en janvier 2023, leurs morceaux peuplent nos playlists avec toujours cette furieuse capacité à nous faire remuer. Le 4 octobre dernier, le groupe nous proposait de découvrir son deuxième album, DOPPELDENK, disponible via Clouds Hill / ADA worldwide. Nous partons donc à la découverte de ces 10 nouveaux titres du quatuor allemand, car oui leur boite à rythme Linndrums a toute sa place dans la formation!

On commence fort avec le single « SCHWARZ SCHWARZ » qui nous met directement dans l’ambiance avec les sonorités entre wave et post punk des allemand.es. La voix de Patrick Wagner, toujours aussi reconnaissable nous rappel déjà pourquoi la musique du groupe nous frappe tant. La suite n’est qu’une leçon de wut wave avec desprestation de choix de Helen Henfling et Jasmin Rilke. Le groupe ne manque pas de mettre au premier plan un son plus post punk sur « Felicita », qu’on va clairement se repasser en boucle une fois l’album terminé tant elle possède un rythme restant en tête et une partie de saxophone des plus réussies. Evidemment notre manque de connaissance en langue allemande nous empêche de vous parler précisément des thématiques des morceaux, mais on peut vous dire que certains sujets très forts y sont traités comme dans l’excellent « Trans » en fin d’album, morceau poignant s’il en est. Ce deuxième album de la formation confirme l’envie du groupe de mélanger les sonorités sans jamais nous perdre pour une écoute toujours plus étonnante et prenante. Même si les rythmes sont toujours entraînants on retrouve une grosse part d’émotions dans certains titres comme « HIER, WO DU STRAHLST ». Evidemment Helen et Jasmin n’hésitent pas à donner de la voix également comme sur le froid « MONOLOG EINER DROHNE ». Après neuf morceaux assez courts, le groupe propose en clôture un titre bien plus long « NE NE, ALLES GUT » qui surprend par son début quasi acoustique où seule la boite à rythme et la basse accompagnent la douce guitare. On sent un véritable travail pour nous marquer de bout en bout et on danse une dernière fois dans notre salon en profitant de ce superbe dernier titre.
Avec DOPPELDENK, Gewalt confirment leur talent de composition et leur place dans une scène de wave toujours plus intéressante. L’album est rempli de titres immanquables qu’on écoute l’envie, et on sent que beaucoup deviendront des inoubliables des setlists de concerts. Le quatuor donne le meilleur pour un album qui laisse imaginer une belle suite de carrière pour une formation qui avait su marquer dès ses premières sorties.

Ever since we discovered the German band Gewalt at a memorable concert in January 2023, their songs have populated our playlists, always with that furious ability to get us moving. On 4 October, the band invited us to discover their second album, DOPPELDENK, available via Clouds Hill / ADA worldwide. So we’re off to discover these 10 new tracks from the German quartet, because yes, their Linndrums drum machine has its place in the band!
We’re off to a great start with the single ‘SCHWARZ SCHWARZ’, which gets us straight into the mood with the German band’s wave and post-punk sounds. Patrick Wagner‘s voice, as recognisable as ever, reminds us why the band’s music is so striking. What follows is a lesson in wut wave, with choice performances by Helen Henfling and Jasmin Rilke. The band don’t fail to bring a more post-punk sound to the fore on ‘Felicita’, which we’ll clearly be replaying over and over again once the album is finished, as it has a rhythm that sticks in your head and a saxophone part that’s one of the most successful. Obviously our lack of knowledge of the German language means we can’t tell you exactly what the themes of the tracks are, but we can tell you that some very strong subjects are dealt with, as in the excellent ‘Trans’ at the end of the album, a poignant track if ever there was one. This second album confirms the band’s desire to mix sounds without ever losing us, making for an ever more surprising and gripping listen. Even if the rhythms are always catchy, there’s a great deal of emotion in certain tracks such as ‘HIER, WO DU STRAHLST’. Of course, Helen and Jasmin don’t hesitate to give their voices too, as on the cold ‘MONOLOG EINER DROHNE’. After nine fairly short tracks, the band close with a much longer one, ‘NE NE, ALLES GUT’, which surprises with its quasi-acoustic opening where only the drum machine and bass accompany the gentle guitar. It’s a real work in progress, and we’re dancing one last time in our living rooms, enjoying this superb last track.
With DOPPELDENK, Gewalt confirm their songwriting talent and their place in an increasingly interesting wave scene. The album is full of unmissable tracks that you’ll want to listen to, and you get the feeling that many of them will become unforgettable concert setlists. The quartet give it all they’ve got on an album that suggests a fine career ahead for a band who made their mark with their first releases.
