Du côté de Toulouse, c’est une toute nouvelle formation qui nous donne rendez-vous : Urge. Avec un casting à en faire jalouser plus d’un : avec des membres de Plebeian Grandstand, Bruit≤, Rallye, M83, Orme et Kid Wise, rien que ça, pour un album entre post punk et cold wave. Intitulé Here/After, il est disponible chez Icy Cold Records depuis le 15 novembre.

Pour ce premier album on commence fort avec « Of Georgics » et son son où cette frontière entre cold wave et post punk se fait déjà très fine. Dans le refrain on retrouve une voix très qu’on verrait parfaitement habiter un morceau de Depeche Mode. Adrien Broué, fait justement des merveilles sur le titre « Convenience » et nous plonge dans un univers froid qui colle parfaitement à cet automne où les températures bien fraiches sont déjà bien présentes. Les musiciens tous reconnus pour leur travail dans leurs formations respectives n’hésitent pas à donner de la voix également quand il le faut pour un ensemble toujours très prenant. Musicalement l’ensemble est servi par ce casting de choix avec des titres, qui sans nous refaire une redite de ce que les années 80 pouvaient proposer, apportent leur pierre à l’édifice d’un son solidement encré dans ses influences tout en acceptant d’en sortir quand il le faut. Les lignes de basse de Clément Libes sont clairement à tomber tout au long du disque, tout comme les riffs de Simon Chaubard qui nous donnent envie de nous laisser porter par cette proposition musicale des plus réussies. « Homecoming » se fait plus énergique dès l’intro avec une basse et une batterie avançant de concert pour nous prendre aux tripes. En parlant de la batterie, on peut saluer le travail de Hugo Dupuis, qui varie son jeu à l’envie tout en réussissant à nous faire partir en danses saccadées quand il le faut. Chaque titre nous fait découvrir une nouvelle facette de cette formation avec par exemple le définitivement post punk « Corrupted ». Le dernier morceau, « Here/After » vient parfaitement conclure cet album du haut de ses neuf minutes, en reprenant le meilleur de ce que la formation toulousaine nous a proposé depuis le début du disque et en le mélangeant dans un morceau somme qui reste clairement en tête dès la première écoute. Là encore les musiciens brillent et vont chercher dans leurs multiples influences des sonorités qui viennent nous attraper pour ne plus nous lâcher.
Avec Here/After, Urge proposent un premier album qui fera date dans le paysage musical français. On a là des musiciens au sommet de leur art qui s’affranchissent tous de styles très variés, pour se plonger dans une nouvelle proposition clairement très réussie. L’album transpire un amour inconditionnel pour deux des genres qui habitent nos écoutes depuis des années avec une envie d’en faire quelque chose de neuf et d’inattendu. Un magnifique album qu’on vous encourage à écouter de toute urgence et qui nous laisse avec l’espérance de voir cette nouvelle formation trouver le chemin de la scène au plus vite!

Over in Toulouse, we’re joined by a brand new band: Urge. With a line-up that would make anyone jealous: members of Plebeian Grandstand, Bruit≤, Rallye, M83, Orme and Kid Wise, no less, for an album somewhere between post punk and cold wave. Entitled Here/After, it has been available from Icy Cold Records since November 15th.
This first album gets off to a strong start with ‘Of Georgics’ and its sound, where the boundary between cold wave and post-punk is already very fine. The chorus features a voice that would sound right at home on a Depeche Mode track. Adrien Broué works wonders on the track ‘Convenience’, plunging us into a cold universe that fits perfectly with this autumn, when the chilly temperatures are already well underway. The musicians, all renowned for their work in their respective bands, don’t hesitate to give their voices when needed, making for a compelling whole. Musically, the album is well served by this choice cast, with tracks that, without being a rehash of what the 80s had to offer, add their stone to the edifice of a sound solidly rooted in its influences, while accepting to step out of them when necessary. Clément Libes‘ bass lines are clearly to die for throughout the album, as are Simon Chaubard’s riffs, which make you want to let yourself be carried away by this highly successful musical proposition. ‘Homecoming’ is more energetic from the outset, with bass and drums moving forward in unison to take us by storm. Speaking of the drums, Hugo Dupuis does an excellent job, varying his playing to suit the mood while still managing to get us off to a jerky dance when we need to be. Each track introduces us to a new facet of the band, such as the definitive post-punk ‘Corrupted’. The final track, ‘Here/After’, brings the album to a perfect close at nine minutes, taking the best of what the Toulouse outfit have offered us since the start of the record and mixing it into a sumptuous piece that clearly sticks in your head from the very first listen. Once again, the musicians shine, drawing on their many influences to create sounds that grab you and hold you fast.
Here/After, Urge’s debut album, will definituly be a landmark in the French music scene. These musicians are at the top of their game, breaking free from a wide variety of styles to immerse themselves in a new and clearly successful offering. The album exudes an unconditional love for two of the genres we’ve been listening to for years, and a desire to do something new and unexpected with them. It’s a magnificent album that we urge you to listen to as soon as possible, and one that leaves us with the hope of seeing this new band find their way to the stage soon!
